Although 9 of the 10 stories in this debut collection are set in the author's native India, it is Meera Nair's great achievement that all the characters in Video are as recognizable as next-door neighbors. From the hilariously impatient villagers in Bangladesh waiting for a visit from Bill Clinton in "A Warm Welcome to the President, Insh'Allah!" to the nasally gifted computer programmer who hails from Mangalore in "The Curry Leaf Tree," we feel we know these people. Even the ambiguous m�nage at a colonial resort in "A Certain Sense of Place" and the obnoxious yet bewildered husband from "Vishnukumar's Valentine's Day" are so finely drawn that we understand them. Family life with this extended cast of characters from Video is lovingly and humorously depicted, from the children's squabbles (one brother "hoarded complaints like sweets") to the family's favorite TV programs (the kids like Baywatch; the aged grandmother watches Understanding the Koran). A new voice worth hearing

Nair explores the emotions that arise from the challenges confronting those caught in the midst of a changing and challenged Indian culture. However, each of the stories in Video is original and fresh--not a tireless recasting of the usual subjects that South Asian authors seem to love. Nair writes about family violence, a sculptor's work of breathtaking beauty, the humorous preparations for the visit of President Clinton to a small village, the fear of a murderer close-at-hand. She writes crisply in many moods, from mystical to urgent, from humorous to uncomfortable. I liked many of the stories; one of my favorites was "Summer", about a family reunion in the beautifully evoked Kerala countryside--a scene with which many South Asian readers may be familiar--which becomes the setting of silent tragedy. This is a new voice definitely worth hearing.

The author's public persona precedes her

I realize this may be a premature reaction; but I heard of this book only because of the author's shallow, sensationalist articles in the Washington Post, and they led me to form a very negative opinion of her. If it's possible to buy and rate a book because you like an author as a person, surely the opposite should be acceptable as well. And the sole purpose of those articles was to publicize the book, so...

Sorry, but I will make sure not to buy or recommend this book based on what I know of the author.

A gem of a book.

I have seldom read stories that uncover the depth and subtelties of human emotion so well. These stories are unbelievable in that they speak to you of feelings and thougts that you'd think only came to you. It's like the author has gotten inside the readers head and is speaking to us of places inside us that we rarely publicly share and only we know exist within us. I have read Arranged Marriage by Chitra Divakaruni and loved that. This book surpasses that collection. I hope it gets the accolades it deserves.

About the Author
Dr Monika Hestad is a brand and design strategist, an associate lecturer at Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design in London and heads the consultancy Brand Valley Design. She has more than a decade's experience as a designer, and has conducted branding and design work in high-tech, FMCG and service sectors, private and public, working with brands including Nokia, Yellow Pages, Thrane & Thrane, Kvaerner, NokiaSiemens Networks, Mars, Stokke, Ringnes (Carlsberg), and Procter & Gamble. In addition to regular teaching in London and at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design, she lectures at other prestigious institutions and teaches entrepreneurs and designers in Beijing and Seoul. Hestad has a Masters in Industrial Design from the Oslo School of Architecture and Design and a PhD in Branding and Design from the same school.

Emotional, sweet, and sexy!

This was a great, emotional read. It was fast paced and kept my interest with every page I turned.

Life has handed Camille Johnston one crap hand after another. But, she has handled it all with dignity and grace. She lives and works for the little guy in her life, never really daring to dream of more.

Nate has his work cut out for him. He needs Camille to realize that she is worth more than what life has handed her, that she IS worth being loved and cherished. But, will she stop running long enough for the two of them to learn to trust each other?

Lots of surprises in this book and, so MANY emotions. It's so wonderful to see all the characters from the series revisited here, to be kept up to speed on what's happening with their lives while we get to know Nate and Camille.

Ms. Carlan draws it all together nicely at the end, no wondering what happened with any certain character. Really well written series, loved it!!!

A beautiful ending to a wonderful series!

I have followed the Falling series since the very beginning and grown to love the cast and crew immensely.

From the city girl meets country cowboy of Aspen and Hank, to British millionaire Collier and fractured artist London, all the stories have captured my heart.

But this story of a fragile young woman, working two jobs and harbouring a secret, heartbreaking past, and the sauve, devilishly handsome, sexy English lawyer who is besotted by her innocence, is nothing short of enchanting.

Cami is beautiful, loving and utterly beguiling in her unabashed goodness, and because of her unassuming nature, the once womanizing bachelor Nate, has finally met his match.

Their story is one of a tragic past, devastating secrets, complete devotion and moments of extreme hurt, that only serve to cement the love that will ultimately bind them together.

Knowing this is the last book in the Falling series at the moment leaves me feeling a little melancholy, but what an enchanting way to end what has been a wonderful journey with these remarkable characters.

Nate can't stay away from Cami...she has a secret...a son...that belongs to Nate's best friend who took her virginity and dumped her like trash. Cami didn't have an abortion and raised her son on her own. Nate falls for Cami and her son.
I loved this story because you just want Cami and her son to be loved and protected. They will be if she gives Nate a chance.....

About the Author
Craig M. Wright received his Bachelor of Music degree at the Eastman School of Music in 1966 and his Ph.D. in musicology from Harvard University in 1972. He began his teaching career at the University of Kentucky and for the past forty years has been teaching at Yale University, where he is currently the Henry L. and Lucy G. Moses Professor of Music. At Yale, Wright's courses include his perennially popular introductory course, Listening to Music (also part of the offerings of Open Yale Courses); his large lecture course Exploring the Nature of Genius; and most recently his Coursera course Introduction to Classical Music. He is the author of numerous scholarly books and articles on composers ranging from Leoninus to Bach. Wright has also been the recipient of many awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Einstein and Kinkeldey Awards of the American Musicological Society, and the Dent Medal of the International Musicological Society. In 2004, he was awarded the honorary degree Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of Chicago. And in 2010 he was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, joining fellow inductee, banjo player Steve Martin. In addition to LISTENING TO MUSIC and LISTENING TO WESTERN MUSIC, EIGHTH EDITION, Wright has also published THE ESSENTIAL LISTENING TO MUSIC, SECOND EDITION; LISTENING TO MUSIC, CHINESE EDITION (Schirmer Cengage Learning/Three Union Press, 2012), translated and simplified by Profs.
