Monumental!

There have been so many books written about John Lennon's life and work that one would wonder what new information could possibly be unearthed to sustain yet another effort. Well, stop wondering and immediately pick up a copy of "Starting Over: The Making of John Lennon and Yoko Ono's Double Fantasy." Author Ken Sharp's latest book focusing on John Lennon's last recording sessions manages to dig so deep into its subject that you'll be riveted on every page. Sharp interviews just about everyone involved with the project and mines each for never-before-told inside stories. He then embellishes the book with dozens of never-before-seen photographs of Lennon that cover the gamut from his first day back at a recording studio in years to laying down tracks for his new album. All-in-all, this book is one that every John Lennon or Beatle fan should read. It is so compelling, that one you start reading it you will not want to put it down. I highly recommend it.

Great topic. Competently done. Liked "Double Fantasy" on release, though didn't fall in love. As it's described by someone in the book 'a nicely crafted collection by professionals' which does make it a bit less interesting. Check out "I'm losing you" w/ Cheap Trick to see the excitement level raise several notches.
The book also suffers from a bit too much "I was just thrilled to be working with JOHN LENNON" comments. We get it.
I know this sounds harsh. But the book doesn't quite make it. It's OK.

Where are the 'Milk & Honey' tracks from same sessions?

It is great to hear how John was in such high spirits during these sessions. But other incidents cite some not-so-nice, jarring incidents that this book excludes. Did Yoko get `final cut' in return for her participation? The result is like overly-sweet `the making of' DVD bonus features , where every actor was the director's first choice, everyone was a joy to work with, and...ad nauseum, they're all the same. Still, there's enough new information here from the musicians involved to make this exercise a worthwhile one for Lennon fans.

A further problem, though, is that there is almost zero discussion of Lennon's `Milk and Honey' tracks. These, of course, were part and parcel of the `Double Fantasy' sessions, and I can't see there being any sequel for this book to discuss them. With no disrespect to Yoko--I like quite a bit of her stuff--I would rather that all the space devoted to her `Double Fantasy' tracks had been assigned to the Lennon tracks whose release were held up until `Milk & Honey' BECAUSE Yoko insisted on parity. Surely this is a mystifying oversight that nearly every Lennon fan who reads this book will find as aggravating as I did. `The Making of Lennon's `1980 Comeback' Tracks' would have been a title and book contents more to the liking of nearly every Lennon fan.

Theoretically this should have been an easy project. Sharp had already done a good part of it in magazine interview form. Just get as many of the people involved in those sessions to reminisce, and then weave those memories into a coherent whole. Which he did, but in leaving out anything negative and leaving out Lennon's `Milk and Honey' cuts, a slam-dunk of a book becomes unnecessarily flawed and unsatisfying.

Still: 4 stars because it was worth doing. Beatle John lived on musically, and there were Beatleworthy gems galore amongst his 1980 recordings.

Come to think of it, maybe there should be a sequel: `The UNmaking of Double Fantasy', to discuss the `Stripped Down' version. Ironically, we have the present book talking, in part, about adding all that Spector-ish gloss. And meanwhile, Jack Douglas and Yoko are just back from the studio, three decades later, having mercifully peeled away several suffocatingly superfluous layers of embellishment that they should have talked John out of asking for in the first place. (He was feeling insecure about his voice, the favourite singing voice of all time for many of us.) No, it shouldn't have taken 30 years to undo the damage but better late than never--absolutely. I guess we had to wait for Jack and Yoko`s mutual hostility from their 1980s lawsuits against one another to cool.

I`d say that the stripped down `(Just Like) Starting Over`and `I`m Losing You` and `Beautiful Boy` are now the masterpieces they always could have been. `Cleanup Time` is much better. And so is `Dear Yoko`, except that the version off the Lennon Anthology is still better because of the looser vocal on it. As for the masterpieces `Watching the Wheels` and `Woman`, I believe they need and flourish with that extra gloss on the original album. Ironic, isn`t it, that the stripped down tracks now sound more like the gloss-free `Milk and Honey` tracks that the author left out of this book.

For over one hundred and fifty years G.W.F. Hegel’s ghost has haunted theoretical understanding and practice. His opponents first, and later his defenders, have equally defined their programs against and with his. This book takes the reception of Hegel’s political thought as a lens through which contemporary methodological and�ideological prerogatives are exposed. It traces the nineteenth century origins of the positivist revolt against Hegel’s legacy forward to political science’s turn away from philosophical tradition in the twentieth century. The book critically reviews the subsequent revisionist trend that has eliminated his metaphysics from contemporary considerations of his political thought. It then moves to re-evaluate their relation and defend their inseparability in his major work on politics: the Philosophy of Right. Against this background, the book concludes with an argument for the inherent metaphysical dimension of political theorizing itself. Goodfield takes Hegel’s reception, representation, as well as rejection in Anglo-American scholarship as a mirror in which its metaphysical presuppositions of the political are exceptionally well reflected. It is through such reflection, he argues, that we may begin to come to terms with them.

Seems like a great book.

I bought this for my son for next year (4th grade). He's a reluctant writer and still doesn't understand how to make a paragraph "flow". I like the pages that start a paragraph and have the child fill in the rest, giving 2 or 3 more sentence starters throughout (pgs. 64-69). I think this will help teach him to write more fluidly and not make it sound like he is making lists.

The book touches on complete and incomplete sentences, subjects and predicates, kinds of sentences, combining sentences, complex sentences, beginning sentences with a clause, adding details, using figurative language, and using similes, metaphors, personification, and alliteration. All of that is fit into the first ~1/3 of the book and the rest is about building paragraphs. This is definitely not a book for younger students just learning to write, unless you have other material to supplement the building blocks leading up to writing paragraphs. This book does not focus on spelling, and only a little on grammar and punctuation. It's more about learning to write in an engaging way. It also includes writing webs and how to organize details in paragraphs.

Really helped my son

I bought this for my 9 year old becuase although he was off hte charts inr eadin and spelling test etc.. he teachers fo thte past 2 years have mentioned he is not creative enough.. writing is nto his thing and he bores easily. We did a chapter every few days and because he didnt want to bother with it anymore he started doing better with his scentences ( creatively) at school. P-T conference last week confirmed it. Mission accomplished.

We homeschool our son who is dyslexic. Writing and reading comprehension are hard for him. This book (even though it appears "simple) broke down concepts in an understandable way, keeping the work "short and sweet," which has helped our boy understand these concepts. Perfect for a dyslexic learning style - short, direct, without a lot of repetition.

Andrea Alvin, John's wife of 37 years and studio partner, is a fine artist and designer who worked with John on many of his famous poster campaigns. She gives background stories and insight to the creation of movie ad campaign and John's creative process and technique.

John Alvin was an American movie artist who painted movie poster art for over 130 films, including E.T., Blade Runner, The Lion King, The Princess Bride and Jurassic Park, as well as the Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and Pirates of the Caribbean film series. He also produced work for Disney Fine Art (Disney character official portraits).

Insightful and inspiring John Alvin retrospective

The Art of John Alvin is a wonderful retrospective and tribute to the late artist who passed away in 2008.

This 160-page hardcover collects the movie posters he has created from 1974 to 1999 plus a special commissioned piece completed in 2007. The artworks includes the finished posters, preliminary sketches, colour drafts and many unused never seen before art.

The reproduction of the artworks is very well done. Many are printed huge and given the full page treatment they deserve. The completed movie poster illustrations are beautiful, and even the sketches are quite a joy to look at as some of them are really detailed.

John Alvin's foray into illustrating movie posters started in 1974 with Blazing Saddles. Soon after that, he got called up to create many more, such as for Blade Runner, Return of the Jedi. E.T., Willow, Batman, Batman Returns, Jurassic Park, several Disney classics such as Pinocchio, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, The Lion King and many more other movies.

Each movie he worked on comes with several sketches, finished coloured illustrations and the final actual poster. For Jurassic Park there were more than a dozen rough drawings and colour layouts.

The artworks are all accompanied commentary that includes the story behind the posters, on how he got the job, conceptualising and even the techniques he used to create the illustrations. The behind the scenes stories are all provided by his wife Andrea Alvin who works alongside him in his studio. No wonder the writeup is so informative and detailed.

It's nice to read about the technical stuff, to find out how he worked, for example, to create the glow behind the words for E.T., he cut out a cardboard for the words and sprayed around them. There are bits of technical talk here and there for the posters.

Overall, this is a well produced, insightful and inspiring artbook.

Highly recommended.

What is the common point between Blade Runner, King Lion E.T, Jurassik Park, Batman forever and Star Wars the return of Jedi?
It is all movies which marked the cinema, finally not for Batman Forever, which has almost killed Batman.
No, the real common point, it is because we remember posters cinema of all these movies, for a very good reason, they are the work of a real artist: John Alvin.
Regrettably, John left us in 2008, and 6 years later we have an artbook tribute: The art of John Alvin.

I am not longer going to keep waiting you, The art of John Alvin, is an absolutely magnificent artbook, because he does not make that to present us the most known posters that he realized. Indeed he would have been able to be easy to make an artbook which I would call "catalog".

No, here there is a real work, and on a real one loves for the work, that includes it in a sense because this book was realized by his wife. So we learn on the work of conception and research. I adored seeing in front pages the sheets of paper with the researches for posters for the promotional campaign of Jurassik Park.

The book The art of John Alvin, presents us in the course of 160 pages, posters in a chronological way, from 1974 to 2007 to posters Star Wars C�l�bration 4. What is brilliant with the work of John, it is that we have a multitude of varied movies, so the fan of Disney will be in seventh heaven with posters of King lion, of Aladdin or another fantastic poster of The Little Mermaid. The fan of Star Wars will not be forgotten with posters of movies, but also convention.

My preference goes particularly to pages dedicated to Jurassik Park, who remains a great moment of cinema for the child fan of dinosaurs whom I was in 1995. I could also speak to you his inimitable style, playing on the light, or still the sketches a lot in black and white for the movie E.T or Willow of a very big wealth. I could speak about height of thing, but I prefer to let you look at the video, and tell you that The art of John Alvin is simply essential for every person who adores the cinema.

Amazing Book, Features Iconic Art by John Alvin

My favorite movie posters are the Disney ones from the mid-90s -- the versions used for "adult' marketing. Turns out all of my favorite ones were created by John Alvin.

This book celebrates his work. His career, spanning decades, included work for Disney, MGM, Paramount, Twentieth Century Fox, Universal Studios, and Warner Bros. Inside the pages of The Art of John Alvin, you'll find many examples of the art he created for those studios (and I can't imagine how hard it was to obtain permission to use all of the images!).

This 160 page book includes art from his iconic posters - The Lion King, Blade Runner, and ET, among many others - as well as concept sketches and images previously unavailable for public viewing. The book is broken down by movie in chronological order and includes commentary from his wife Andrea, who offers behind the scenes insights into the creative process.

My favorite images are from the Disney posters, namely Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Aladdin, and The Little Mermaid (although all the Disney art is stunning). Alvin's use of light in the posters and concept art is the work of a master. The Jurassic Park section is also notable - it contains amazing images that unfortunately weren't used in the movie's marketing campaign. Fans of Star Wars will also be pleased with the selections in the book. In summary: I really love the artwork and my only complaint is that I want MORE!!

Sadly for us, Alvin passed away in 2008. This book at least gives us a chance to peek behind the scenes and see the evolution of his creations. Some fans may even want two copies... one to keep as a book and one to use for images to hang in their house or at work :-)

He is the author of peer-reviewed articles on a range of topics in philosophy, including the problem of evil, Confucius and virtue, the meaning of life, and death. His work has appeared in the International Journal for Philosophy of Religion, Asian Philosophy, Philo, Religious Studies, and the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy.

Does the job

I used this as a textbook for a course on the meaning of life I was assigned with little notice. It had already been selected. The text deliberately uses almost exclusively works from the "analytic" tradition and forgoes much of anything from the existentialist-Continental tradition. That said, the selections were adequate to the task of teaching the course. I was disappointed to discover that the choice of religious readings included only persons from the evangelical Christian wing. I had to add in material from other religions--like Buddhism--to show that it is possible to have a religion and not to have a deity or deities. Any competent teacher could use this text and likewise supplement the readings to cover the necessary waterfront of topics. I thought the book very useful in getting back to the idea that questions about the meaning of life are meaningful. Even if some philosophers may think the question lacks meaning, the general public does not. Since so many philosophers gave up talking about such things the general public has sought such information elsewhere, leaving philosophers to wonder why enrollments are perhaps not what they might wish. If the book can convince more academic philosophers to reconsider the topic and develop interesting material to address genuine human concerns, then it has done its job very well.

A Welcome and Excellent Anthology

This is a very welcome anthology addressing the neglected but important question of the meaning of life. As Joshua Seachris points out, the mechanisms of science have displaced the teleology of religion.
Claims for a source of meaning can range from the supernatural, objective or subjective naturalism, or nihilism. Meaning can be defined as significance, worth, coherence, self-fulfilment, or expressed as the narrative of our lives. Essays on death in section V consider how far the end of the story determines this narrative.

Robert Nozick shows that meaning must be independent and is not aided by a god. He claims meaning derives from transcending our limits. Narrow living restricts meaning which is realised in relationship and over time. For Susan Wolf, meaning derives from successful creative projects in life. Jeffrey Gordon presents an admirable case for meaning being independent of God, but does then offer a theistic interpretation. His is the best of the theist essays. William Lane Craig’s is by comparison the worst, claiming that human life is dire without God. One wonders where he has been, why he has not seen happy fulfilled human life, and whether he acknowledges that it is technology rather than God which has determined the human experience. Paul K Moser is allowed to finish the volume with a presentation of the standard evangelical claim that we need to overcome death to have meaning, and that only God can overcome death for us. Neither point is convincing ; he seems not to have read the challenge to theism as the basis for meaning from the other contributors to the same anthology. He simply ignores their argument.

Arjun Markus asks whether meaning is invented or discovered, and suggests it is both. Meaning cannot be dictated, ie absolute, or even objective. Almost by definition it must be subjective. So, according to John Kekes, we create our own meaning. Brooke Alan Trisel contributes an excellent essay arguing convincingly that neither immortality nor long lasting effect generate meaning.

My own conclusion is that meaning is indeed a subjective naturalist interpretation of our lives. We generate our own meaning, as we do our own purpose, and choose our own virtues. To generate and derive meaning from life is to appreciate, enjoy, and make something creative of our life, whether for us and/or others to enjoy. It is our personal metaphysical. The present and the person is ultimately all there is. We need to value this and not dismiss it as transient futility. These essays explore how meaning might be derived. They do not however suggest much what that meaning might be. This is the next important step for philosophy to consider.

A good collection

The volume contains many of the classic essays from philosophers on the subject, most of which I have summarized in my recent book, The Meaning of Life: Religious, Philosophical, Scientific, and Transhumanist Perspectives. But there are a few new articles, and they have been carefully chosen and add much to the literature. The collection as a whole is comprehensive and quite good.

Seachris begins by contrasting the passion with which a continental thinker like Camus approaches the question with the skepticism of an analytic philosopher like Russell. He wonders which approach is more appropriate. No doubt though, twentieth century analytic philosophers have argued that the question was either unanswerable or meaningless. The juxtaposition of the importance that most people give to the question with the disdain in which it is held by many professional philosophers is striking. This volume suggests that some analytic philosophers are now less suspicious of the question.

Seachris further contrasts the cosmic dimension of the question, the search for a deep universal narrative to render our lives intelligible, with the local or individual dimension, which refers to the search for a good or valuable way of living. Most philosophers argue that these questions are related but exactly how they are is debatable. Seachris notes that most of the essays in the volume are concerned with the individual dimension; thus issues of ethics, aesthetics, and happiness will be relevant.

The question arises because humans can step outside themselves and ask questions like: “Who are we?” Why are we here?” “Does reality care about us?” In short we can see our lives from an eternal, yet seemingly trivial, perspective. The question is born out of both existential angst and philosophical wondering about the nature of the cosmos and how best to live in it. But the question has taken on a new urgency in the Western world with the decline of the influence of the religious worldview, and the arrival of the modern scientific one. As the religion lost cultural respectability, so too did the worldview that accompanied it. In response to this loss, we are left with a question that torments existentialists like Nietzsche, Camus and Sartre, while the analytical philosophers try to clarify it. Philosophers have made some progress in clarifying the question, especially by viewing it, not as one question, but as an amalgamation of many questions such as: “Why does anything exist?” “What’s it all about?” or “What makes life purposeful, valuable, worthwhile or significant?”

He also clarifies the supernatural, nihilistic, and naturalistic alternatives as possible answers. The author does note that work needs to be� done to: 1) understand the extent to which death makes life futile; 2) clarify the relationship between the meaningful and the moral, aesthetic, and eudaimonistic; 3) determine the existent to which values can be part of the natural world; 4) satisfy our need to understand how evil can be related to meaning; and 5) investigate the question of something besides religious narratives can give life meaning.

Here's a brief comment after reading the new articles in the collection. As long as the scientific worldview is incomplete—which it always is given its provisional nature—then a final answer to the meaning of life will never accompany the scientific worldview. Moreover, if humans have an innate need for a narrative, which I suspect they do, then humans desperately need a new narrative to replace the less plausible religious ones. In my view there are such narratives available, narratives of cosmic evolution leading to the realization of transhumanist dreams, and our hope in a more meaningful future. And while these narratives lack the supposed eternal truth of religious narratives, they have the advantage of being much more likely to come true.

Individualization of stellar and planetary systems.

The main point I got from this short book is that our Solar System is not a typical one or an average one. Most planetary systems appear to have very large gas giants like Juniper close to their stars, orbiting in short periods. Of course these are the most easily spotted through a variety of methods spelled out in the book. Rarely if at all can we see these planets directly. So, although most stars likely have planets and moons around those planets they don't have the pattern of small planets near the sun and larger gaseous planets further from it. And besides this generalization, the main point is that each star system is different. We already knew that many stars are double or triple revolving around each other but now we know that each system is individual in its character. To find an Planet with near the size of Earth orbiting a star more or less the mass of our Sun has not happened yet and evidently will be a rare find. And if we expect to explore, not to mention, colonize these planets we are in for some drastic changes of environment, even if we do find one more or less like ours. The chemical makeup of the planet, the illumination character of the star as well as the gravity variations will make adaptation a high-tech proposition. The drama of this exploration which is going on in the 21st Century and probably for the third millennium is one to watch however and changes every day. This book will be out of date shortly but the excitement of the discoveries is well laid out and this is a permanent record of that process in its early days (now).

Very interesting, though some articles should be updated

The subject of exoplanets is really exciting, and this little funny book gives you a good glimpse to it though a series of interesting articles, But do not expect a coherent, historical review of the ascent and successes of this research area. I remove the 5th star because of this and even more because some articles are very old and outdated; they should be replaced or rewritten in the light of new knowledge.

"Articles from the Scientific American" might sound a bit dry, but I found this quite the opposite. Update information presented in an interesting and very readable way. Highly recommended to anyone interested in the subject.
