Women's Rights in the United States: A History in Documents (Pages from History), by Anne M. Boylan

Women's Rights in the United States: A History in Documents uses a diverse collection of documents--including manifestoes, letters, diaries, cartoons, broadsides, legal and court records, poems, satires, advertisements, petitions, photographs, leaflets, maps, posters, autobiographies, and newspapers--to examine major themes in the history of women's rights and women's rights movements in the U.S. The documents encompass the experiences of women from a wide range of racial, ethnic, class, economic, sexual, marital, and social groups. The book covers such topics as organized social movements; changing definitions of rights and different women's access to rights; divisions among women within women's rights movements; global contexts for women's rights activism; and the question of what it means for women and men to be "equal." Each chapter includes an introductory essay, and each document has a headnote or long caption. A picture essay illuminates how both suffragists and anti-suffragists employed cartooning to articulate their political positions.

A model of inclusive coverage of women's history
By Amazon Customer
Fascinating collection of original sources in U.S. women's history that covers the full range of class, ethnicity, and sexuality in a way that really opened my eyes to the range of women's activism since even before the colonies and up to the late 20th century. Boylan's choices and comments throughout are thought-provoking and could encourage lots of interesting discussion. It's the kind of work a casual reader could dip into here and there for topics of particular interest (and in the process discover others) or to which an academic class on women's history could dedicate considerable attention.

Any reader looking for a view of women's history more nuanced than popular culture narratives that feature only the big names and ignore the larger struggle of many women over a long time will feel well served in purchasing this book. Highly recommended for history buffs and U.S. history courses.

The Practical Cogitator or The Thinker's AnthologyFrom Mariner Books

The Practical Cogitator represents the wisdom of the ages gathered together in one volume. It is what the editors call a sort of "cerebral Coast Pilot," a compilation of essential passages on the great themes of life. First published in 1945, the selections -- long and short, prose and verse -- cover a wide range of world literature, from Confucious to James Gould Cozzens, from the Old Testament to Jean-Paul Sartre and J. Robert Oppenheimer. Many of the passages quoted are of the kind that color the thoughts and shape the lives of men.

One of the editors of this anthology, Charles Curtis, had commanded a US Navy destroyer during WWI. Observing that soldiers are nearly always idle in war, Curtis conceived of an anthology of passages from the nonfiction of recent centuries, that soldiers could read while marking time between rare battles. Throughout his busy professional life, Curtis continued to read widely, copying passages he loved into notebooks by hand. He also wrote several books on the law and public affairs.

When WWII broke out, Curtis approached Houghton Mifflin, which agreed to publish such an anthology; thus the Practical Cogitator was born. One of HM's editors, Ferris Greenslet, became a coeditor. The Practical Cogitator did not appear until the last months of WWII. A second edition came out just as the Korean War broke out. Greenslet's son-in-law prepared the 1962 third edition.

The PC is the fruit of an awesome collaboration between two equally brilliant persons whose differences nicely complemented each other. Greenslet was a humanist and connoisseur educated at Columbia, rather the introvert. Curtis was a Harvard-educated lawyer who read in several languages, and who knew something about science and business; he was the more extroverted of the two. This book is no highbrow Bartlett's Quotations, and is not suited as an anthology for university instruction. But I would not hesitate to include on a course reading list essays that happen to be excerpted in the PC.

Were a foreigner to ask me "What is American civilization and why might it be valuable?" I would reply: read the Practical Cogitator. If I were forced to spend the rest of my life with but one book, this would be it.

One of the very best
By Eric D. Rasmussen
I first purchased this book in the Yale University bookstore as an enlisted sailor in the mid-'70s, hoping to someday go to college and looking for inspiration. This book has been with me ever since. The section entitled "He Lives With His Fellows" taught me more than any other single source about how to develop into an adult in the midst of conflict and indecision.

This book led me into the Great Books Program at St John's College, and then two further degrees from Stanford. Now, as director of an Intensive Care Unit in an academic medical center, I recognize that this book is a measurable part of my success. I still have my original and well-worn copy, with milestones in my career noted inside the front cover. I've known how influential this book has been.

This book went with me to Iraq for ten months, to central African refugee camps, to Bosnia three times, to the Katrina response in the floodwaters of New Orleans, to Korea and Colombia, and I'm here buying two more copies for my daughters. This small volume can change lives.

The Dark: New Ghost StoriesFrom Brand: Tor Books

Ghosts are among us. On the other side of death, the spirits of departed souls have been part of human myths and beliefs as long as anyone can recall. Some of the most powerful and affecting images in fiction are of ghosts, spirits, visitations from beyond the veil of death.
Ellen Datlow, an editor whose stellar career has garnered her World Fantasy Awards, a Stoker Award, and a Hugo Award, has long been fascinated by ghosts. Now she has brought together an array of all-new, original ghost stories for the shivering delight of readers who are ready to be frightened.
And that's no idle threat. These are not friendly ghost stories. This book is called The Dark because the editor asked her favorite authors specifically for stories that would provoke fear or disquietude, tales that would cause shivers down the spine and make readers want to keep a light on when they retire to bed for the night. The authors who answered her call compose an all-star cast of brilliant storytellers, including such award-winning, certifiably masterful authors as Ramsey Campbell, Jeffrey Ford, Charles L. Grant, Glen Hirshberg, Kathe Koja, Tanith Lee, Kelly Link, Sharyn McCrumb, Joyce Carol Oates, Lucius Shepard, and Gahan Wilson. Frighteningly good writers. Each has penned a unique tale unlike any of the others. All have cast dark spells that are sure to inspire fear or unease in the hardiest of readers.

From Publishers Weekly
Ghosts with surprising substance flit through this sterling anthology of new weird tales, and most have purposes more sophisticated than the chain rattling and caterwauling of their old-fashioned forebears. In Jeffrey Ford's "The Trentino Kid," the ghost of a teenager serves as an instructive specter of unfulfilled promise for the aimless narrator. Lucius Shepard's "Limbo" features an obsessive romance between a spiritually deadened criminal, who can't tell life from the afterlife, and an enigmatic young woman who complicates his predicament. In Glenn Hirshberg's "Dancing Men," the ghost is the shadow of the Holocaust, which haunts a survivor of the concentration camps and becomes an indelible legacy passed on to future generations of his family. Even when more traditional ghosts appear, such as the grandfather clock animated by the spirit of a murder victim in Tanith Lee's "The Ghost of the Clock" and the lingering influence of a madwoman that terrorizes a child in Ramsey Campbell's "Feeling Remains," they have a psychological dimension that adds depth and power to their horrors. Datlow has cast her net beyond the horror genre's usual names and pulled in contributors whose stories are the equal of their best work, as well as mystery, fantasy and SF writers whose tales seem to be the ghost story they've always wanted to tell. Just as her anthology Blood Is Not Enough (1989) helped redefine the vampire for modern readers, this book is sure to provide a yardstick by which future ghost fiction will be measured.
Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
The ghost story is making a comeback, editor Datlow says. To prove the point, she presents 16 brand-new examples, agreeably varied in locale, period, and style. Jeffrey Ford's "The Trentino Kid" and Gahan Wilson's "The Dead Ghost" are faux memoirs, Ford's emotional, Wilson's characteristically wry. In the pitch-perfect "The Gallows Necklace," Sharyn McCrumb exploits an interwar Oxford setting, while in "The Hortlak," Kelly Link makes the most of the convenience store at the end of the world as we know it. In Death Valley in Mike O'Driscoll's "Silence of the Falling Stars" and in a not-so-old, dark house in Terry Dowling's "One Thing about the Night," no ghost shows, but that doesn't reduce their chill factors. If a few entries flop, Lucius Shepard's novella-length "Limbo" more than compensates. About a "retired" thief who, on the run from his former boss, repairs to a cabin in the woods, this stunner reads like a collaboration between Elmore Leonard and British horror icon Arthur Machen; hard as the former, lush as the latter, it's a masterpiece. Unfortunately, not as good as Datlow's other anthologies
By Traveler
I so badly wanted to give this book five stars. I can only offer my apologies to the many Datlow fans out there. And I'm one of them.
I've read all six of the fairly tale/fantasy anthologies that Ellen Datlow created with Terry Windling. Of those, I would give five stars to five out of the six volumes. They were all that good. Perhaps I simply have expecations carried over from those books which simply don't apply here. In those books the stories tended to have a point or a moral. That's the nature of many fairy tales. Obviously, this is much less so with ghost stories.
The problem I have with "The Dark" is not only that many of the stories didn't seem to have a point to make, it's that the book misrepresents itself on the cover. The image you see is of a cloudy night with bats flying eerily through the sky. It denotes gothic, damp and foggy stories about being lost in the woods, visiting an eastern European country, or a ghost story from a hundred years ago. To give Datlow credit, she explains in her introduction that these are "new" ghost stories that sometimes tell about spirits appearing in mid-day to demand their revenge. But she also states that she hopes the stories will keep readers awake at night.
And that, essentially, is what the problem is. Some of these stories are excellent literary character studies. For example, "The Trentino Kid," the first story in the book, is a good look at a clam digger having to confront the lack of direction in his life. It's a very good read. But it is not that scary. There are other stories that follow the same pattern - such as "The Silence of the Falling Stars" about a park ranger in Death Valley.
Then there the stories that just shouldn't be in the book at all. I have no idea why "The Dead Ghost" is even in this anthology. It comes off as an exercise from a college writing course. It's not that the writing is bad - it's not - it's that it's a single scene with no emotional build-up.
If you're looking for just good stories with an element of supernaturual, buy this book. If you're looking for something that keeps you awake at night, look elsewhere.

Good outweigh the not-so-good
By Barks Book Nonsense
Jeffrey Ford's "The Trentino Kid," starts things off on a slightly creepy note. It's about a guy who has frittered his youth away in what he thought was an easier route. He's regretting the choices he's made when he comes across a ghost that'll force his hand in a (hopefully) new direction. This is a story that'll resonate with anyone who wishes they had taken a different path years earlier. I know it certainly struck a nerve with me!

Tanith Lee's "The Ghost In The Clock" is atmospheric as is her usual style and features a tale of a clock with a horrific past, a ghost and a good dose of madness. Descriptive writing, a creeping sense of unease make this one a chill inducing read.

"The Thing About the Night" just wasn't to my taste. Too scientific, me thinks.

"The Silence of the Falling Stars about a park ranger whom I didn't care for at all didn't work very well for me either, I'm afraid. I can't pinpoint where it went wrong. I just found it dull overall.

Gahan Wilson's "The Dead Ghost" was a short and to the point recounting of an injured man's encounter with an overweight, naked ghost. I enjoyed this one, maybe because it was a nice breather after the previous two stories which I thought were both over long.

Oates "Subway" is a haunting but somewhat familiar story of tragedy and a woman's never-ending search for love.

"The Seven Sisters" is a story about 7 formerly grand homes now falling to ruin. This one didn't resonate with me in any way and I can't really remember much else about it.

"Doctor Hood" was more accessible the the previous story. It's about a woman returning to her childhood home because she's worried about her increasingly distant father. It's about loss, letting go and features a good dose of ghostbusting. I enjoyed the originality of the end of this one.

"An Amicable Divorce" is a story rooted in tragedy and is deeply emotional. It's about a man still deeply in love with his ex-wife. Sadly, she isn't at all in a good place to return his love but calls him often and begs for help with a creature that is inhabiting their home late at night. This one gets under your skin and lives up to the promises made by the editor and, despite it's very gloominess, was probably my favorite.

"Feeling Remains" is about a young boy whose feminist mom seems more interested in everyone but him. After forcing him to care for an aging neighbor who dies, he's haunted by the old lady's treasured book of photos. This story, the neglect of the child, and the over-the-top selfishness of the mother annoyed the heck out of me.

"The Gallow's Necklace by Sharyn McCrumb" was a "past coming back to haunt you" type of ghost story that was very enjoyable. The idea of the Gallow's Necklace was so utterly chilling it won't be something easily forgotten.

"Brownie, and M" Charles Grant has always been a difficult read for me. His quiet style of horror didn't work for me when I was younger and more into the likes of Clive Barker & Poppy Z. Brite but this story, about a group of elderly friends who are all experiencing strange haunting phenomena, is disquieting in a way that kept me turning the pages. Or, maybe I'm finally old enough to appreciate him ;)

"Velocity by Kathe Koja" Unlike Grant, I adored Kathe Koja's earlier work (Cipher and the lot) even though the style was extremely difficult to get into. She was always one of those love 'em or hate 'em type of writers who I happened to love. I worked my through her books of body modification and love affairs gone sour and always looked forward to more. Somewhere along the way I lost touch with her work and no longer have patience for the fractured writing style when I try to go back and re-read them. This story wasn't nearly as difficult as her longer novels but it didn't move me and isn't one I'll remember come tomorrow.

"Limbo by Lucius Shepard" is a novella length tale of a former criminal finding love. Or so he thinks. I loved the revenge theme of this one and how it all tied together so nasty-like at the end.

"The Hortlak by by Kelly Link" is the kind of weirdly quirky short story that I really enjoy. It's sort of a David Lynch-like version of "clerks". The world has been turned upside down, zombie's wander thru convenience stores, a strange clerk revels in bizarre pajamas, and a woman gives homeless dogs one last glimpse of fun and freedom. It's all very strange and doesn't always come together in a cohesive way but I couldn't turn the pages fast enough.

"Dancing Men by Glenn Hirshberg" is a coming of age/innocence lost type of story where one young boy has to face his grandfather's horrific memories of the Holocaust. This one is a gutwrencher because the horror here isn't of the invented variety.

Though the book contains a few small duds, the majority of the stories were genuinely creepy.

Exceptionally Well Written Intellegent Ghost Stories
By J. Fercho
I always enjoy a good scare, and was happy to come across this anthology of "new" ghost stories. These are not your typical chain rattling, spook filled, gorey tales. For the most part these stories focus on the subtle line between the living and the dead, playing on our fears of the unknown, and leaving the reader with an overall feeling of disquiet rather than downright fear. These stories will have you pondering the possibilities rather than jumping at noises in the night. My personal favorites were "The Trentino Kid", "Doctor Hood", and the very unnerving "An Amicable Divorce" If you can appreciate a "thinking" reader's ghost story, these are the tales for you.

Review
"I think the approach taken by the textbook is a good combination of communication theory and practical application of interpersonal communication principles. This makes the text easy to read and provides great examples and exercises to practice the concepts discussed so that students learn how to adapt their communication skills. … The instructor supplements also provide everything an instructor needs to develop and maintain their interpersonal communication course."

"I think the approach to this book is conversational and theoretical, which enables students to clearly understand concepts while making them real to their everyday lives. This is what I want my students to do, which is why I chose to use this textbook. The previous book was too academic and dry and lacked the ability to give the concepts richness and usefulness."

"The text breaks down a complicated subject into specific digestible chunks and teaches to competencies in those chunks. I think that this text does a great job with organization. This is a book I can take in order. It is a book that makes sense."

"Julia Wood has quite a reputation so those who know her work might be tempted to adopt the book based on that alone. I also think people will appreciate Ms. Wood's open and honest approach. Her book is approachable and engaging and provides a very solid introduction to interpersonal communication that differs from other textbooks on the same topic."

Works well for use both in and out of the classroom setting
By An Amazon Customer
I generally don't comment much on textbooks because most are pretty formulaic and don't offer much in the way of engaging text. Woods' "Interpersonal Communication: Eveyday..." is an exception. Woods does a good job of explaining introductory communication concepts and terminology but, more than that, she also provides excellent context for readers to gain better insight into application of these terms and concepts t more than just a surface level. As an introductory text, a student (and professor) could do much worse than this by Woods. Even if a person just wants to learn a bit more but not get the usual, hokey and formulaic overview of interpersonal communication, this book is an excellent choice, assuming it can be had as a used book at a much lower price.

The one drawback, and I don't know that it really is that much of one, is that in a couple of places it seemed there was not quite as much treatment of a topic as I might have liked. This, however, is likely due to the fact that this is an introductory text rather than an in-depth treatment of the larger subject matter.

Incidentally, I have used this book at various times in my personal life when I encountered difficulty communicating with another person. As a reference guide, it helps me come up with ideas to work on and get past difficult (or sensitive) communication issues. Thus, I guess for me at least, it is a text that works well both in and out of the classroom setting. THAT is what text should do for its readers.

By Eric Mascarin Perigault

Marijuana Daily Gardening: How to Grow Indoors Under Fluorescent Lights, by Henry Woodward

An indispensible primer and troubleshooting guide for beginning indoor growers.

Written by a newbie for the newbies, this is a unique grow guide, tailored specifically to indoor cultivators using fluorescent lights. From setting up your grow room in a safe and energy-efficient way to drying your bud without alerting the neighbors, Henry Woodward walks you step-by-step through the entire process of pulling off your first successful crop–without the difficulty and confusion of most grow books.

Many new growers find themselves overwhelmed by the sheer volume of cultivation information out there, thanks to the comprehensive coverage of marijuana growing techniques that exists today. Most new growers don’t need to know about tending to outdoor landrace sativas–they need to know how close to set their lights to their plants and when to water a soil mix. Marijuana Daily Gardening strips away all the unnecessary background noise and focuses, in an easy-to-follow and heavily illustrated way, on exactly how to take your grow room from empty to bursting with bud on your first-ever try.

Granting access to the grow notes of a trusted friend, this guide details the trials and tribulations that Henry faces through the daily tending of his plants, and unlike other grow books, doesn’t cover up the errors he makes or pretend that everything will go off without a hitch. Unlike other growers, Henry tells you when he’s burned his plants by placing them too close to the lights, so that you can learn from his mistake. He tells you when he got a little too drunk and forgot to water in the morning. He lets you know how not to do things, because he’s done it all!

With a diary-style layout, sidebars on important topics and fantastic full-color photos to drive the information home, this book is everything the rookie grower will ever need to walk them down the road to success.

Whether you know everything about sterilizing your pots and your space but can’t quite decide what lights to choose, or you’ve no idea about how to set up a grow space but are an expert in keeping thrips at bay, Marijuana Daily Gardening will endow you with all the knowledge you need to be a successful, consistent gardener–and all with the hands-on advice of a fellow rookie.

About the Author
Throughout his extensive teaching career, Henry Woodward has taught people the fundamentals of Marxist theory, the basics of string theory and how exactly to remove an egg yolk from an egg white using only a plastic bottle. Now, he’s teaching them to grow pot.

As a native of Northern California and a Medical Marijuana user, it was only a matter of time until Prof. Woodward stumbling into the world of growing his own green. Not long after his first successful grow, he became a member of a local co-op and got his hands on some killer NorCal genetics. After stumbling through a few more grows, with varying degrees of success, it dawned on him that if he had a beginner grow guide detailing all the mistakes he was making, he might not be making them himself. To that end, he began keeping a daily diary of his marijuana exploits and taking photos of his baby greens every single day. Right from germination to harvest, he set his ego aside and told his audience of his many issues; from getting too drunk and forgetting to water to letting his plants burn on the lights.

With the only grow book to comprise a troubleshooting guide and a how-to-grow book, Henry Woodward now brings his years of teaching experience to a new market: potheads. Even though deep down he knows that he’s been teaching potheads all along.

By Bud Green
This book is quite good. The author focuses on practical and direct advice for growers interested in a small cannabis garden in their home. I was skeptical of using fluorescent lights as he suggests, but after reading it I realized that it is ideal for small scale medical growers, or folks that are just learning. The book is also very useful for people that are considering growing their own cannabis for personal use because it has a daily journal that follows his garden through several harvests. Essentially, it teaches people that growing cannabis is a lot of fun, but also involves daily work (watering, pruning etc). It was a great read and I recommend it to anyone considering a marijuana garden in their house.

A First Course in Dynamics ICM Edition: with a Panorama of Recent Developments, by Boris Hasselblatt, Anatole Katok

The theory of dynamical systems has given rise to the vast new area variously called applied dynamics, nonlinear science, or chaos theory. This introductory text covers the central topological and probabilistic notions in dynamics ranging from Newtonian mechanics to coding theory. The only prerequisite is a basic undergraduate analysis course. The authors use a progression of examples to present the concepts and tools for describing asymptotic behavior in dynamical systems, gradually increasing the level of complexity. Subjects include contractions, logistic maps, equidistribution, symbolic dynamics, mechanics, hyperbolic dynamics, strange attractors, twist maps, and KAM-theory.

A Bit Heavy For Me
By The Dabbler
This book has been very challenging for me. I'm not a mathematician (except in my dreams), and this book is heavy with abstract theory. One of the biggest challenges is that the book uses symbology not familiar to me, and there is no glossary of symbols (which would be VERY useful).

I would be interested in what others with a more mathematical background think about the book -- am I wasting my time trying to slog through it?

For someone just trying to get a feel for nonlinear dynamics and chaos, I strongly recommend Steven Strogatz's book "Nonlinear Dynamics And Chaos".

Buddhist Biology: Ancient Eastern Wisdom Meets Modern Western Science, by David P. Barash

Many high-profile public intellectuals―such as the well-known "New Atheists" Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, and the late Christopher Hitchens―have argued that religion and science are highly antagonistic, two views of the world that are utterly incompatible. David Barish, a renowned biologist with thirty years of experience, largely agrees with them―with one very big exception. And that exception is Buddhism.

In this fascinating audiobook, David Barash highlights an intriguing patch of common ground between scientific and religious thought, illuminating the many parallels between biology and Buddhism, allowing listeners to see both in a new way. Indeed, he shows that there are numerous places where the Buddhist and biological perspectives coincide. For instance, the cornerstone ecological concept―the interconnectedness and interdependence of all things―is remarkably similar to the fundamental insight of Buddhism. Indeed, a major Buddhist text, the Avatamsaka Sutra―which consists of ten insights into the "interpenetration" between beings and their environment―could well have been written by a trained ecologist. Barash underscores other similarities, including a shared distrust of simple cause-and-effect analysis, a recognition of life as transient and as a "process" rather than permanent and static, and an appreciation of the "rightness" of nature along with a recognition of the suffering that results when natural processes are tampered with. After decades of removing predators to protect deer and elk herds, ecologists have belatedly come to a Buddhist realization that predation―and even forest fires―are natural processes that have an important place in maintaining healthy ecosystems.

Buddhist Biology sheds new light on biology, Buddhism, and the remarkable ways the two perspectives come together, like powerful searchlights that offer complementary and valuable perspectives on the world and our place in it.

Review

"I'm skeptical of attempts to reconcile religion with science. At worst the two are incompatible. At best the reconciliation seems superfluous: why bother, why not just go straight for the science? But if you must essay this difficult reconciliation, Buddhism is surely religion's best shot, at least in the atheistic version espoused by David Barash. And the task is an uphill one, so you'd better pick a very good writer to attempt it. David Barash, by any standards, is certainly a very, very good writer." -- Richard Dawkins, author of The Selfish Gene and The God Delusion

"Most atheists turn from religion with emotions between disdain and relief. Not so David Barash. He is convinced that traditional Western religions fall because they are refuted by modern science, especially in the evolutionary realm of which he is a master. Nevertheless, in Buddhism he finds deep insights about human nature and our obligations to others and to our environment. Barash is sometimes wrong, and sometimes even irritating. But as this provocative and stimulating book shows, he is never boring." -- Michael Ruse, Professor of Philosophy at Florida State University and Editor of the Cambridge Encyclopedia of Darwin and Evolution

"All who are motivated to search for life's meaning will be stimulated and guided by David Barash's exploration of similarities and differences between Buddhism as a philosophy and modern evolutionary biology. He demonstrates that combining modern biology with that ancient philosophy can yield a deep and satisfying foundation for enjoying a world that does not care about us." -- Gordon Orians, Former President of the Ecological Society of America

Mentioned in the Wall Street Journal.

"Barash's volume is a fascinating personal manifesto, full of humor and intellectual historical references that mark an exploration of Buddhism from the perspective of a trained scientist embedded in Western culture." --The Quarterly Review of Biology

Hard to read from a Buddhist point of view...
By Jacob S.
Some curious students of contemporary Buddhism will be familiar with the ongoing dialogue between Buddhism and science. Events like the “Mind and Life” conferences put high-profile scientists in selfies with the Dalai Lama and other well-known Buddhists. While psychology, neurology, and physics have tended to be the disciplines most featured in such prestigious conferences, Dr. Barash’s Buddhist Biology attempts to add biology to this interesting discussion. Though many of the questions he asks are undeniably fascinating and profound, his overall approach seems ill suited to the task.

Before we go into a critique, Barash should be given credit where it is due. He is a buoyant, colorful and playful writer and doesn’t flinch when tackling complex questions. Additionally, his vocal call for human beings to take responsibility for their effect on the planet reveals his overwhelmingly positive motivation. He sees in Buddhism the potential to ground the insights of biology in a way that highlights human moral imperatives. He does a good job of highlighting the sheer wonder of our world and the reader can really feel how much he loves our Earth.

But as a rule, Barash does not entertain discussion on anything that falls outside the boundaries of his worldview. His downright ornery insistence on what he calls the “natural, the real, the material” makes it difficult for him to appreciate the methodology of the Buddhist tradition. While certainly understandable given his training, it nevertheless clouds his discernment and weakens his conclusions.

The book is roughly divided into two exercises: a discussion centered on the ways Barash sees Buddhist philosophy through the lens of contemporary biology, and, a moral argument for acting urgently on climate change. In his discussion of Buddhist philosophy, he comes across as mocking and dismissive of whatever parts of the tradition that do not conform to the philosophy of science. He uses the controversial work of Stephen Batchelor as the main justification for his method, interspersed with cherry-picked quotes from other popular Buddhist figures and Buddhist literature. I imagine that many of these authors would take issue with Barash’s approach – and he suspects as much, admitting that even Stephen Batchelor wouldn’t likely go as far as he does on some issues. It seems that for Barash, the story of biology and his vision of science necessarily have every answer, which makes his book a soliloquy rather than a true dialogue.

Barash’s main issue seems to be that he has difficulty seeing Buddhism as itself, switching between what Jos Cabezn calls the “identity” and “conflict” models of scientific engagement with Buddhism. In the first model, scientific concepts are “identical” with Buddhist ones, or vice versa. For example, early on Barash regards “Buddha Nature” as a teaching about “biological continuity among all living things” through time. While there is a possibly interesting convergence between the two, there is a highly significant gap between them that he leaves unexplored. In the second model, the two traditions are seen as inherently incompatible or even in “conflict.” We need only refer to the sections where he takes an insulting tone, using terms like “hocus-pocus” and “poppycock,” to refer to scriptural Buddhist ideas such as the knowledge of previous lives.

For a real dialogue to occur, one must be open to putting differences, as well as convergences, into conversation. This third, more responsible approach is what Cabezn calls the “complementarity” model. Complementarity acknowledges that each view (scientific and Buddhist) has something unique to contribute to the pursuit of knowledge. They may have different objects or different methods, but each contributes equally to a valid view of a more holistic reality. Barash doesn’t seem aware of the possibility that Buddhism might have some interesting criticism of his own assumptions. Instead, he seems to instinctively dismiss the strange or unknown as garbage in the name of Buddhist Modernism. This could be because he has not taken the time to thoroughly understand these areas of difference.

At times, Barash seems to have a confused – if not frustratingly wrong – understanding of some Buddhist concepts. For example, in one of the more interesting parts of the book, he asks how the theories of evolution and karma might inform each other. However, rather than examine the merits or weaknesses in the ideas of karma and reincarnation, he simply reduces what can be said about it to the “recycling of atoms and molecules” and proceeds to lament the fact that Buddhism insists on a “soul.” The Buddhist notion of reincarnation is not an easy subject, but to frame karma through the “mind/body” duality of Renaissance Europe is simply a mischaracterization. It doesn’t take much research to know that atman – as the soul and primordial self – was one of the main targets of Buddha’s critique of his Vedic contemporaries. A nuanced appreciation of this point should be basic to any discussion of karma or rebirth. There are too many places in the book where he makes blunders like this, undermining his credibility.

In addition, his monistic materialist reduction makes it difficult for him to rally the reader to his main point. When he attempts to move the discussion to ethical implications, the portrait of a world where free will is impossible and our genes rule behavior fails to inspire. We humans, understood as lumbering biological robots bent on self-preservation, can only encounter his pleas as one more thing to be consumed on our road to procreation and meaningless death. I really wanted Barash to succeed here, but the impersonal limitations of his appeal made it feel stale. One has to wonder whether it really matters if the world destroys itself. What makes one configuration of molecules better than another one?

Barash’s Buddhist Biology is a book about biology, but it has little to do with Buddhism. A more accurate title would be: What Biological Ideas Buddhism Has Too. There is certainly a lot of good information and interesting questions in his work, but readers looking for a conversation between Buddhism and science would do well to find books that engage these questions more maturely and with less speculation, such as the many that have been based on the Mind and Life dialogues. A good start might be Varela and Hayward’s Gentle Bridges. Barash is certainly less than gentle in his treatment of this complex and delicate topic, and his “bridge” looks more like a fortress. For Barash or any author wanting to have a place in these nascent explorations of the intersection of the Buddha and the boson, he or she will need to raise the portcullis and open the gate a bit more.

Making the connection between biology and religion?
By Obama Surfs
I've long been skeptical about the usefulness of connecting religion and science, since to my scientist-mind, the two are quite distinct. And in fact, after reading Buddhist Biology, I'm still skeptical! But at the same time, I've been convinced by Professor Barash's persuasive biology-based arguments that Buddhism offers an exception - especially if one follows his suggestion and ditches the "abracadabra" and "hocus-pocus," which is to say, if Buddhism is seen as a powerful philosophy rather than as a religion.

Not only that, but the author's interweaving of Buddhism and biology is not only compelling and illuminating, but also frequently great intellectual fun. It hadn't occurred to me, for example, that existentialism had such potential connections to Buddhist thought, or that Buddhism wedded to biology results in such a compelling case for political engagement on behalf of preserving our shared environment.

Buddhist Biology is a delightful excursion, one that I'll recommend to my friends (atheists as well as devout, Buddhists, Buddhist wannabes as well as biologists) - anyone ready for a genuinely satisfying intellectual journey. It even has some surprising flashes of genuine humor!

useful insights for living an engaged and meaningful life.
By Swamiwilly
The scientifically confirmed profound interconnectedness of all things; the human mind - the result of evolution - capable of a measure of freedom unlike anything else; and the modern transcendence of solitary enlightenment in favor of enlightened activism are some of the themes discussed and revealed in this well written book. I liked it better than most of the other books trying to explain the neuroscience of awakened living.
