Very instructive book
By Alexander Goncharov
Kaleidoscope of attacking chess revealing different styles of the current top chess players. It is very interesting book, more impressive than other similar good titles such as Improve Your Attacking Chess by Simon Williams and Secrets of Attacking Chess by Mihail Marin, yet Jan Timman's presentation is superior in terms of clear exposition of the game flow to the point when the attack is about to unfold. I think this book will be very helpful for those young chess players who want to develop an attacking chess style by analyzing the games of their favorite top players. The book is a sheer pleasure to read thanks to its very clear verbose style, and a large number of beautiful games displaying the highest level of chess mastery in action. Jan Timman's gift to explain complex things in an accessible manner makes the book suitable for intermediate chess players, who want to grasp that illusive image of chess style.

Great for amateur players
By A Customer
A very instructive book because it makes clear there are different ways of obtaining the initiative in a game, by pointing at the differences in style of various top players. Timman almost always concentrates at the essence of a position, without bothering you with pages of variations and subvariations. Maybe it takes the confidence of a top player like Timman to leave out most of the stuff computers come up with.

New, Interesting, Good Style
By JonathanS
Why I am qualified to review this book: I used to be ranked #25 on the top 100 list for my age. I won third in the N. CA jr. High champs, 3rd at a LA Masters. I have had the honor of working with FM Banawa, from the Philippines, who is now rated 2307 according to January FIDE rating supplement. I have also work with other strong players, with ratings over 2400 USCF. So, I am no stranger to books, especially attacking books, the other book that I thought was really really good was Attack with Tal.

Most Attacking books are showing examples of the position and what happens (in reference to Larry Christiansen's Rocking the Ramparts and Storming the Barricades). This book Rocks the Ramparts and Storms the Barricades even better then LarryC did (in reference to Larry Christiansen's 2 books, one for Gambit Publishers, the other for Batsford Publishers)! A very impressive book. Jan Timman starts annalyzing from move 1, and tells us up front what happens. He looks over the games of GMs Anatoly Karpov (Boa Constrictor), Jan Timman (Iniatiative), Garry Kasparov (Demolitions), Nigel Short (Elegance), Ivan Sokolov (Target Practice), Vasily Ivanchuk (Origional and Depth), Viswanathan Anand (Efficiency), Alexey Shirov (Creative) Vessilin Topalov (Wild Adventures), Judit Polgar (Agression), and Andrey Volokitin (dogged determination). He then goes over a brief summary of the players, then shows us some of their games, why he gave them their names.

Anatoly Karpov - because he sacrifices an exchange to keep the enemy king in the center, and then just attacks them, and transposes into a won endgame, which is a very efficient and effective style.
Jan Timman - Because Jan Timman seems to grab the Initiative in the middle game, and then launch a interesting and also beautiful attack.
Garry Kasparov - Well as we all know, GM Kasparov is brilliant. He just destroys everyone. He is very strong, and is by far the best player in the world. Kasparov just attacks!
Nigel Short - Short is very strong at attacking chess. He has a nice elegant flow to his chess, and that is why Timman labeled him "Attractive Ellegance". All of the games that he played here are very nice, and extremely good quality.
Ivan Sokolov - Sokolov is a strong GM, who is well known for his positional understanding. Sometimes, he wakes up and decides that it is a day where he will go after his opponent's king. When that happens, he almost never misses his target, and Timman proves it through examples.
Vasily Ivanchuk - Vasily "chuky" Ivanchuk has been a top GM for years, and was thought to be the next work champion in the early 1990s. He is very strong positional player, yet he is also vrey strong in attacking chess. He is just plain 100% Original in his ideas.
Vishy Anand - We all know Anand is one of the best players in the world, if not the best. He is always very efficient, with a deep positional understanding, yet he also knows how to attack, and is very good at attacking chess.
Alexey Shirov - The 2006 Tal, Alexey Shirov is a brilliant GM, and has been a member of the world elite for years. His creativity propelled him there. He has had some nice wins over all of the top GMs in the world, and is known for his razor sharpk, creative style.
Vesselin Topalov - He is always well prepared, and his opening preparation is based on that he can get a good position where he has a chance to launch an attack on the enemy king. He takes lots of risks, and is also ex-world champion because he lost 5-6 in classical and 2.5 - 1.5 in rapid chess to Vladimir Kramnik.
Judit Polgar - She has been known for years to be a very strong attacking player. Timman shows us this through examples again.
Andrey Volokitin - Volokitin is a very strong players, who was once ranked #25 in the world. In GM Timman's opinion, his play and style reminds him of Vlemovich when he was younger (Vlemovich is the guy who invented the Bc4 Qe2 0-0-0 system against the classical Sicilian) a player with a head of crazy ideas.

Next, he showed through 33 more examples common tactical themes in chess, a "quiet move", which is really just a knock out move, that limits the enemy king's mobility, and its just game over. He gives numerous other examples of other common themes. It was very interesting.

Timman proved to me that this is a good book, and I will be buying another Jan Timman book. He is very good writer, and player. He shows us how to build an attack step by step. I recommend this book to all, strong attackers and not so strong attackers, Patzers (club players) to GMs, this book can improve your chess a tremendous amount! I, as a very strong attacker, really enjoyed the book, and learned a lot. It is to mention that I didn't even need a board to go over the games, there were enough diagrams, for me, so that I could take a little checkpoint every now and then, and know exactly what was going on.
Jan Timman, an ex-member of the world elite, and still a very strong player, he is the man! He is one of the most qualified people in this world to be writing a book about attacking chess. He is very good with the Initiative, and very good when needed to attack.

Excellent resource on in a rarely written about realm
By Michael A. Kreutzjans
Brilliant analysis of wisdom from many different but many times related analytical lenses on the subject of wisdom. I've found that the academic community is devoid of any papers on wisdom as it can be difficult to define. However, Dr. Targowski does an excellent job of bringing the concept to light, defining wisdom in a clear manner while making unique and interesting insights into wisdom. I would highly reccomend this book to anyone interested in cognitive processes.

The Short Story: The Reality of Artifice, by Charles May

The short story is one of the most difficult types of prose to write and one of the most pleasurable to read. From Boccaccio's Decameron to The Collected Stories of Reynolds Price, Charles May gives us an understanding of the history and structure of this demanding form of fiction. Beginning with a general history of the genre, he moves on to focus on the nineteenth-century when the modern short story began to come into focus. From there he moves on to later nineteenth-century realism and early twentieth-century formalism and finally to the modern renaissance of the form that shows no signs of abating. A chronology of significant events, works and figures from the genre's history, notes and references and an extensive bibliographic essay with recommended reading round out the volume.

From Booklist
By a well-known critic of the genre, a general survey of the history and properties of the short story from its genesis in the mist-shrouded early history of literature to its alive-and-kicking state today. This book deserves a place in any public library literature collection because good critical guides to the short story are few and far between, and this one is excellent. Chapter one, appropriately entitled "Overview," reaches back to Boccaccio and Cervantes to find the short story's roots, then succeeding chapters focus on the nineteenth century, when the short story in what we recognize as its modern form began, and move on to the twentieth century, during which it has grown into maturity as a literary form with full integrity. Along the way, May not only discusses important writers but identifies important trends and movements. An appended list of recommended titles wraps up May's edifying presentation. Brad Hooper

Review
"Good critical guides to the short story are few and far between, and this one is excellent."
-"Booklist
"Arguing that short fiction secularizes mythic perception, May provides both an account of generic change and incisive readings of canonical authors and specific stories. One of the book's greatest merits is its concluding bibliographic essay, which will be indispensable to students new to the short story as well as scholars familiar with the field.
--Michael Trussler."

From the Back Cover
With The Short Story: The Reality of Artifice, Charles E. May, a foremost authority on the genre, contributes a major effort to examine the history and characteristics of the short story from a critical perspective. Drawing on twenty-five years' experience studying the form, May argues that the development of the short story has always reflected "a tension between the traditional mythic origins of the form and the increasing pressures of modernism to depict 'real life.'" The book commences with an incisive overview, tracing how the conventions of the short story have evolved over time, from the form's origins in myth and folktale through its immersions into romanticism, realism, formalism, and, in the contemporary renaissance, the twin streams of magical realism and hyperrealism. In four core chapters May charts the major periods in the genre's development, along the way delving into the stories of a host of representative writers - among them Hawthorne, Poe, Conrad, Chekhov, Hemingway, Porter, Barthelme, and Carver - and offering close readings that entertain as they inform. An in-depth bibliographic essay surveys the principal criticism devoted to the form, while an annotated list of recommended titles furnishes readers with a useful guide to the primary English, American, and European stories of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; a detailed chronology sets forth key publication and birth/death dates from the 1340s to the 1990s. A masterfully written yet eminently accessible study, The Short Story: The Reality of Artifice constitutes an important new resource for students, scholars, writers, and the reading public at large.

One of the best scholars on short story theory
By Flvio
This is not the first time I read Charles E. May. I had read two other articles from "The New Short Story Theories", edited by himself: "The Nature of Knowledge in Short Fiction" and "Chekhov and the Modern Short Story". Both articles and this book I've just bought are being very useful and helpful in the writings of my master's degree thesis on "The genre problem and the short-short story". Charles E. May is a great scholar on short story theory. He goes deep but is very clear in what he writes. I am very thankful to him.

The internet and the mobile phone have disrupted many of our conventional understandings of ourselves and our relationships, raising anxieties and hopes about their effects on our lives. In this second edition of her timely and vibrant book, Nancy Baym provides frameworks for thinking critically about the roles of digital media in personal relationships. Rather than providing exuberant accounts or cautionary tales, it offers a data-grounded primer on how to make sense of these important changes in relational life

Fully updated to reflect new developments in technology and digital scholarship, the book identifies the core relational issues these media disturb and shows how our talk about them echoes historical discussions about earlier communication technologies. Chapters explore how we use mediated language and nonverbal behavior to develop and maintain communities, social networks, and new relationships, and to maintain existing relationships in our everyday lives. The book combines research findings with lively examples to address questions such as: Can mediated interaction be warm and personal? Are people honest about themselves online? Can relationships that start online work? Do digital media damage the other relationships in our lives? Throughout, the book argues that these questions must be answered with firm understandings of media qualities and the social and personal contexts in which they are developed and used.

This new edition of Personal Connections in the Digital Age will be required reading for all students and scholars of media, communication studies, and sociology, as well as all those who want a richer understanding of digital media and everyday life.

Review

"New communications technologies are always hyped by some people and denounced by others. Nancy Baym’s brilliant book explodes myths and challenges stereotypes. Her clear-sighted and penetrating analysis provides the mental toolkit needed to reach a more nuanced view of the social impact of digital media."
Tom Standage, Digital Editor, The Economist

"In this lucid yet learned book, Nancy Baym covers a breadth of analysis on whether and how the internet and mobile communication are reconfiguring our identities and personal relationships. While recognising the many continuities in our social life from offline to online, she also notes some signs of optimism, showing how we may yet build new, perhaps better, personal connections in the digital age."
Sonia Livingstone, London School of Economics and Political Science

More amazing than any work of fiction, yet true in every word, it swept to the top of the bestseller lists and riveted the consciousness of the world. As an Emmy Award-winning film starring Sally Field, it captured the home screens of an entire nation and has endured as the most electrifying TV movie ever made. It's the story of a survivor of terrifying childhood abuse, victim of sudden and mystifying blackouts, and the first case of multiple personality ever to be psychoanalyzed.

You're about to meet Sybil-and the sixteen selves to whom she played host, both women and men, each with a different personality, speech pattern, and even personal appearance. You'll experience the strangeness and fascination of one woman's rare affliction-and travel with her on her long, ultimately triumphant journey back to wholeness.

READ IT ONCE .... YOU WILL REMEMBER IT ALWAYS
By Sandra D. Peters
It is impossible to say a book on such a sensitive and horrific issue as child abuse is a great book to read; in fact, this book is probably one of the most difficult ones to read that you will ever come across. Having studied psychology, it is a known fact that Multiple Personality Disorder(MPD) is associated with child abuse. The personality "splits" when the human psyche can no longer cope with the pain of abuse.
Sybil is a story of such abuse at the hands of a mentally disturbed mother - sexual, physical and emotional abuse prevail. Sybil is a true story based on one of the most severe cases of MPD and child abuse in history. Over a span of twenty years, it reveals the various "personalities" living within one woman. How one could even survive such atrocities is beyond belief. The time period of this story ends in the 40's. Today, research continues on this subject and much has been learned since Sybil's case, but one can never have enough knowledge.
Sybil's personalities eventually merge and in 1998, the real Sybil died, finding, we hope, final peace and contentment. If you are interested in books on MPD, another true life story is, First Person Plural: My Life as a Multiple, by Cameron West, PH.D.

Spellbinding case study of multiple personality
By Rachel Newstead
In 1954, a thin, nervous young woman walked into the office of New York psychiatrist Cornelia Wilbur complaining of unusual "spells". She would inexplicably "lose time", fading out of consciousness and coming to again hours or even days later, often in an unfamiliar city and wearing clothing she never remembered buying. Believing it to be a case of hysteria, Dr. Wilbur embarks on what she thinks will be a routine course of treatment. Until, that is, her patient strode into the office one day with a confident, almost aristocratic air. "Sybil couldn't come," she says, "you can call me Vicky." Dr. Wilbur realized she was dealing with a victim of multiple personality disorder, then almost unheard of. For Dr. Wilbur and the young woman (whom the author gives the pseudonym of Sybil) it was the beginning of an emotionally exhausting eleven-year journey to make a fractured human being whole again.
In the course of her treatment, Sybil proved to have no less than sixteen different personalities (including two male alters, Mike and Sid). The sophisticated Vicky was the "record keeper" of the selves, holding back the memories too painful for Sybil and the others to know. Peggy Lou was the repository of Sybil's anger--defiant, belligerent, contemptuous of Sybil and terrified of breaking glass; Vanessa, a redhead with impressive musical talent. Some, like Ruthie, were barely more than toddlers mentally.
Vicky had good reason to keep the memories in check. Sybil had endured a childhood so horrible the word "nightmarish" doesn't do it justice. The child of a schizophrenic mother, (called "Hattie") and a passive, distant Fundamentalist father, Sybil never knew what awful or outlandish thing her mother was liable to do. An abused child before the term existed, Sybil was forced to endure physical and sexual torture that seems chilling even in our tabloid tell-all age. Rape and inexplicable, unnecessary forced enemas were a daily ritual until the age of six or seven--the angry, frightened Peggy Lou had to emerge to endure the unending agony.
Schreiber paints a vivid portrait of Sybil's family and the conservative town in which she grew up, and while we discover a clear history of schizophrenia on the maternal side of Sybil's family, Schreiber places most of the blame at the feet of Sybil's father Willard. He had known of his wife Hattie's schizophrenia from the time Sybil was six, when Hattie submerged into a mysterious catatonic state for an entire winter. Yet he made no attempt to hospitalize her, weakly protesting that he couldn't separate a mother and her child. The child's one escape from this hellish woman came in the form of her grandmother--when she died, Sybil's self disappeared. When she re-emerges, she finds herself in a fifth-grade classroom--almost two years later.
After years of harrowing, almost fatal crises, Sybil's selves are eventually reunited in 1965--when she is forty-two. For forty of those years, she was a living mosaic, a collection of parts. Hers was touted as a classic case of MPD and childhood abuse. Yet, not long after the death of the real Sybil in the early nineties, controversy arose over the accuracy of the account. Some professionals alleged that Sybil had not been a multiple personality at all, and may in fact have never been abused. Dr. Wilbur knew this, they maintain, as did the author--the "personalities" had supposedly been planted in Sybil's mind under hypnosis. The truth may never be known, but it is an undeniable fact such cases do occur, and as such, "Sybil" is a primer for anyone wanting to know the nature and origins of multiple personality.

Lacking in structure, intellectual rigor, and content
By Adam Klimmek
Although I do not typically read these sort of works, in the case of Dale Carnegie’s book I felt compelled to do so because it comes so highly regarded. Having given it a close read over the last few days, I feel inclined to share my thoughts on it. In what follows, I will discuss the structure, rigor, and content of the book.

First, this book is very loosely structured. It is divided into four parts, each of which contains a handful of chapters. While it is easy to see why each chapter goes in which part of the book, there is no real logical connection from one chapter to the next. In fact, changing the order of certain chapters would arguably make for a better read overall. Take part two of the book, for example. Here, Carnegie lists his ‘Six Ways to Make People Like You’, where each principle gets its own chapter. There seems to have been no thought given as to how these six principles could be sensibly arranged—they’ve just been randomly mixed together. While I admit that what follows may not be the best possible alternative, it nevertheless seems to make sense to me. Perhaps the six principles ought to be rearranged based on the order in which they typically come to bear, or as follows: (1) smile; (2) remember (and use) the person’s name; (3) become genuinely interested in them; (4) be a good listener and ask questions; (5) keep the conversation centered on their interests; and, as a general culmination of everything, (6) make them feel important. Given the script that an encounter with someone new typically follows, that ordering would make the most sense. Rearranging the six principles in this way, then, could potentially help readers better remember and utilize them. To be sure, ‘Six Ways to Make People Like You’ is just the second part in a four-part book, but it illustrates the book’s general lack of structure all the same. In a word, I believe that the structure of the book is poor.

Second, this book lacks intellectual rigor. At heart, it is a work of psychology. However, the number of psych studies mentioned throughout the book can practically be counted on one hand. (And of those, how many were double-blind and peer-reviewed?) To support his claims, Carnegie relies primarily on cherry-picked anecdotes, random bits of history, and a grab-bag of quotes from authors, philosophers, presidents, and the like. Although the sheer breadth and quantity of his references may seem impressive at first blush, those who reflect in any detail on the nature of Carnegie’s ‘evidence’ will recognize that it provides weak support for his claims, at best. What’s more, most of his claims are completely unqualified. For example, he does not mention any instances in which smiling may actually cause people to dislike you. He does not address any scenarios where your ‘genuine interest’ in another person may come across as over-the-top and even frightening. He ignores the fact that beyond a point you can (and perhaps even should) stop calling your best friend by their name every time you address them. In short, Carnegie doesn’t provide much good evidence for his claims, the ‘evidence’ he does provide would reduce psychologists to tears of laughter, and his claims are altogether devoid of any subtlety or nuance. Thus, I maintain that the book lacks intellectual rigor.

Third, proportionally speaking, this book is about 1% content. The vast majority of actual content can be found in the first few sentences, the last few sentences, and the principle stated in each chapter. Unfortunately, as has been noted in other reviews, all of these principles are utterly pedestrian. The other 99% of the book consists almost exclusively of anecdotes, random quotes, the author repeating himself, and other fluff. I admit that these statements sound extremely hyperbolic, so I will try to give the reader a sense of what the experience of reading this book is actually like. Throughout the book, Carnegie transitions seamlessly from one tiresome anecdote, quote, or other bit of fluff to the next. He’ll spend a few paragraphs describing the time that Theodore Roosevelt was polite to a kitchen maid at the White House; then he’ll drop a loosely-related line from Emerson on which he’ll provide little to no elaboration; that spontaneous Emerson quote will be followed by his gushing effusively over the success of some salesman who took his class; having recollected himself, he will then declare that if there is one thing to take away from his book, it is Principle X; since Principle X is so important, he will repeat himself again for emphasis; finally, Carnegie will make his way back to Theodore Roosevelt (although he seems to have also been quite fond of Abraham Lincoln). As if this weren’t bad enough, the banality is compounded as Carnegie belabors the point that Principle X applies not only in workplace interactions, but also in social interactions, and in familial interactions, too. Queue another story about some president, a quote from Socrates, a plug for his class, and so on. Then queue another story, quote, and plug for good measure. Finally, the monotony is even further compounded by the fact that every single chapter follows this formula. He moves from Principle X, to Principle Y, to Principle Z, and on and on and on. Most readers will have the distinct impression that they are reading the same few paragraphs over and over again. To put it bluntly, in light of its general lack of substance and insane amount of repetition, I submit that the book has little in the way of content.

In closing, I would like to stress that all of the foregoing is simply my personal opinion. I am sure there are many who feel differently about Carnegie’s book, and I am glad that so many people have enjoyed it. Unfortunately, for my part, I found it to be lackluster for the reasons mentioned above.

This book changed my life
By Melissa
This is BY FAR the best book I have ever read. The author has tips in the beginning of the book to help you, one of which is reading through it with a highlighter so you can go through it later and remember things better. I couldn't stress this more. You only remember 10% of what you read (look it up.. cone of learning) so chances are, you won't remember all of it, but being able to flip back through it and skim through the highlighted parts will help enormously.

As for the book, this changed my outlook on life and relationships in ways I never thought would happen. I have always been a blatantly honest person and have prided myself on that. I believe honesty is a trait too many people are lacking in this world. But from reading this book, I was able to see things from a different perspective. For example, "Criticism is futile because it puts a person on the defensive and usually makes him strive to justify himself". As obvious and simple as that is, it's something I did not think much about. Being honest about something, such as telling someone those jeans don't look very good on them, causes them to want to justify their decision to buy/wear those jeans. The author helps you find other ways to approach situations so that you are better able to get people to understand your side of things (or change their mind, or do what you want - depending on the chapter), rather than closing their mind to anything you might have to say. He reminds us that when we are dealing with people, "we are not dealing with creatures of logic, we are dealing with creatures of emotion". It is things like that, that make this book so powerful. He goes into vast detail with examples of each and every fundamental, helping you to understand exactly what he means by each one and how you can try to change it. Using the techniques from his book are hard and will feel unnatural at first, and he even says that, but it opens your mind to things you will wish you had realized years ago.

an extremely important and revealing book
By Michael George
The book is concerned mainly to show how one can “win friends and influence people” in brief encounters, such as situations in which a salesman is trying to make a sale, or a businessman is trying to influence clients. This is clear from the anecdotes that Mr. Carnegie supplies. However, too, he makes it clear that success in these brief encounters can, at least sometimes, achieve not just superficial friendship or temporary influence, but friendships and influence that are deep and last for years. I think that one cannot necessarily expect Mr. Carnegie’s insights into human behavior and psychology to help right away. It might take quite a lot of practice, as it is a developed skill. For example, he focuses on empathy, i.e. on being able to put yourself in the others shoes, and understand their point of view and what they want. This capability is related to many factors, including the types of people one encounters. One might experience significant disappoints. It is important to have persistence and a positive attitude. One criticism that one can level against this book is that it is very old. Is it still of use in today’s world? The book is, at base, a book opening our eyes (if we do not already know) about practical psychology, in brief encounters. His anecdotes may be difficult for a modern reader to relate to, but his insights into behavior remain as valid today as when he wrote the book. This places the book among the classics of "literature", and very valuable to readers still. This is a book that not only do I recommend strongly, but that one “should” read. It is an extremely important and revealing book. I'd give this book 10 stars if I could.

Whether you are a native English speaker or a foreigner with English as a second language, there is no shame in wanting to check your English language skills. There is always scope to improve how you communicate, especially when you are using it for business purposes. A book like this may help!

The method in which you communicate can vary. Sometimes you need a powerful, concise message written in an upbeat, positive tone. Another time you may need a detailed, nuanced and precise nuanced tone. Far too many schools teach, if you are lucky, a middle ground that focusses on the technical aspects of writing, yet they invariably fail to teach the art of writing and skill in selecting the right writing “tool” for the job.

One feature that positively stood out in this book and deserves special praise is the use of case studies that briefly focus on an element of writing and communication and help bring a particular element or point in focus. The case studies could be worth the price of this book alone, especially if you believe your language is in tip-top condition. Although it is a brave or foolish person who would definitively state their language might not benefit from a bit more polish… People in glass houses should not throw stones!

The book is full of handy, useful writing tips for everyday business and features many aide memoires for those who should know the subject yet inexcusably manage to forget bits of it from time to time. It can offer something for everyone, so there is no excuse not to at least look at it and see if you can improve upon anything.

From Publishers Weekly
Journalist Strauss, who has coauthored books with the band members of Mötley Crüe (The Dirt) and porn superstar Jenna Jameson (How to Make Love Like a Porn Star) now offers a terrific look at the dysfunctional livelihoods of stardom, a theme based on his many interviews for various publications. Strauss went back to his original interview tapes and notes in search of moments—mostly unpublished—that reveal "the truth or essence of each person, story, or experience." He liberally and ingeniously cuts back and forth between scenes, such as pairing the youthful, arrogant claims of Oasis that the band could have been the Beatles in the 1960s with the tortured feeling of the Who's aging leader Pete Townshend ("All we can do in the future is look back"). In other instances, he shows the self-doubt shared by Soul Asylum's Dave Pirner and actor Orlando Bloom. But the best moments come when Strauss has earned such trust of his subjects that he becomes part of some very weird scenes, all of which are presented in all their often hilarious detail: shooting guns with Ludacris, getting kidnapped by Courtney Love, making Lady Gaga cry, and shopping for Pampers with Snoop Dogg. The section with Julian Casablancas is pretty funny but there's not much redeeming about this book
By Done in 60 Seconds
I'm no Neil Strauss fanatic. The Game changed my life and Emergency was a very interesting read. I've never read his rock bios or even his interviews. So ELYWYD was a miss for me. It's become a bathroom book. I was hoping for more of a narrative but there really isn't one, it's just an anthology of mostly bland interviews.

Maybe i'm of a dissenting opinion but i don't find Lady Gaga all that interesting. I think it was a mistake to put her in the book, as nobody will care or even really remember her a decade from now. On top of that, it's just her backstage rambling about her family. Who cares?

The section on Brian Wilson should have been interesting but it's not. All we learn about him is that his wife answers for him a lot because he's done so many drugs that it's impossible for him to complete a thought.

For some reason, Strauss goes on for page after page about what happened to wax sculptures from a closed-down Nashville museum. Again, who cares? They ended up where you'd expect them to end up. Melting in a basement somewhere.

The Who? Who cares?

The guy from Soul Asylum? Who REALLY cares?

The section with Julian Casablancas is pretty funny but there's not much redeeming about this book. And it's long. Strauss phoned it in with this one.

AWESOME!
By Matt Simons
This is the first book that I've read by Neil Strauss but won't be my last. He's an amazing author and interviewer. Every interview in this book is entertaining. I've learned so much about the celebrities I've admired my whole life by just reading these in depth raw interviews. I really like how each interview is extremely different than the last. It will go from Snoop Dogg to Johnny Cash to Britney Spears to Led Zeppelin to Madonna and so on. All the words from each interview are coming strait from the mouths of each interviewee and not manipulated and twisted by journalists and thrown together for a magazine article. You'll really get to know each and every celebrity on a personal level. I would recommend this book to anyone. I've found a new respect for almost every person in this book based. It's all very entertaining!!!

So much more than a compilation of interviews
By Erik Ketzan
I was pleasantly surprised by Everyone Loves You When You're Dead (ELYWYD?). I was expecting a collection of Strauss' interviews over the years, assembled, like every other such book, in some kind of mundane order-- the interview with Madonna, then Gaga, then Bowie, etc.-- I was expecting to read the interviews I was interested in and skip the ones I wasn't.

Thankfully, ELYWYD is so much more than that. The book splices dozens of Strauss' interviews into a narrative so that, unlike most books of interviews, you actually want to read this one cover to cover. The narrative sometimes follows a theme (contrasting different rock stars' views on faith, struggles with addictions, their childhoods, battles with record companies, etc.), and other times explores a particular story (for instance why some members of Pink Floyd don't speak to one another and why Pete Townshend resisted re-forming The Who).

Like most of Strauss' books, this one's a page-turner. I read over 300 pages in one day. The book goes down so easy that it's easy to take for granted how *big* it is, in every sense. It's the condensation of apparently a couple decades worth of rock journalism, and assembling such a crazily entertaining narrative from what must have been thousands of hours of interview tapes must have been no easy task. But as entertaining and fun as the book is, it's also a deep and surprisingly illuminating exploration of fame, art, and ego. It's a major and important book on music, stardom, and, well, the times we live in.

There's a lot more to say, and I'm sure many other reviewers will jump in and say it. Anyone with a serious interest in music or pop culture in general will probably devour Strauss' ELYWYD.
