very helpful
By Jeanne Marie
This book gave a great overview and some routes through Ireland via bicycle. As I still have not totally planned my trip, I cannot tell how the recommendations are, but Lonely Planet guides are usually been excellent, in my experience. I wish it had more information on choosing between a guided and a DIY tour, as I am now trying to decide whether to do all the work in carrying luggage, making reservations and finding bikes B&Bs myself, or spending a little extra. It has good information about bicycles and the gear to bring along as well.

unresolved problems
By W Boudville
This text is a good explication of the current state of information retrieval. Unsurprisingly the discussion is dominated by the seminal case of the Web. As several chapters relate, prior to the Web this field was dominated by the case where a user [=searcher] would typically hand a query to a specialist [usually a librarian], and the latter would craft an actual query that was input to an IR database. Also, the database was built and maintained by experts. Much of the book describes how the Web differs; a harder case to treat, not least because of the sheer size of the Web corpus.

One tough problem is tackled in a chapter on multimedia resource discovery. How to search across a corpus of images or video for desired data? This is more difficult than a search of text or HTML files. In turn, this problem leads to largely unresolved subproblems, like the semantic gap. The latter refers to the distance in meaning between scanning an image to extract low level data about its pixels' colours and distribution, and the higher level understanding of what the image is about, in human cognitive terms.

Barring breakthroughs in artificial intelligence, these problems may be unresolvable. The text shows that current solutions are approximations. One of which is the manual tagging of images and video, so that the tags can be searched as text. Another is at the GUI level, where the searcher can input an image and searching is then done for similar images. A feedback loop is made by the searcher being able to pick an image out of the result set of images, for another iteration of search.

Unfortunately, this chapter has some example images that are too small for the reader to easily discern. A simple improvement would have been to expand the images, at the cost of a few extra pages.

Other chapters discuss different challenges. Like picking spam out of a set of email. Existing antispam methods are only briefly discussed, but you get the gist of several ideas.

Cross language IR is the final chapter. Machine translation (MT) is shown to be still quite rough, but it is the only realistic way of analysing huge data sets on the Web. Manual translations are more accurate but simply too slow and costly. We see that MT is greatly improved if there are existing Rosetta stones - pages in 2 languages that have been written to mean the same thing. From this, MT can bootstrap to greatly improve the automated translation of other documents between those languages. The example of Canadian government documents, which are by Canadian law required to be in both English and French, is cited as an extensive corpus. Another is the European Union, that has translations of thousands of its official documents between the various European languages.

A Chance in the World: An Orphan Boy, A Mysterious Past, and How He Found a Place Called Home, by Steve Pemberton

Aheart-rending but uplifting story of the human spirit’s ability to prevail.

From the day he is five-years-old and dropped off at his foster home of the next eleven years, Stephen is mentally and physically tortured. No one in the system can help him. No one can tell him if he has a family. No one can tell him why, with obvious African-American features, he has the last name of Klakowicz.

Along the way, a single faint light comes only from a neighbor’s small acts of kindness and caring—and a box of books. From one of those books he learns that he has to fight in any way he can—for victory is in the battle. His victory is to excel in school.

Against all odds, the author succeeded. He attended college, graduated, became a successful corporate executive, and married a wonderful woman with whom he established a loving family of his own. Through it, he dug voraciously through records and files and found his history, his birth family—and the ultimate disappointment as some family members embrace him, but others reject him.

Readers won’t be the same after reading this powerful story. They will share in the hurts and despair but also in the triumph against daunting obstacles. They will share this storywith their family, with their friends, with their neighbors.

A powerful work--well worth reading
By Alec
I found this book to be truly wonderful. Steve Pemberton's personal narrative is many things at once: a story of hardship and triumph, sorrow and hope, tragedy and deliverance. However, the use of these familiar terms does not do full justice to the book's main thrust. At a deeper level, this autobiographical montage offers a compelling message that victory over seemingly insurmountable suffering can emerge when one holds fast to an existential goodness by reaching within. To be sure, Pemberton's path as a child and adolescent was riddled with recurrent pain and disappointment--this portion is a heart-wrenching read, to say the least. Indeed, the story becomes all the more potent by its authenticity and brutal honesty. In the end, what emerges is not only victory but also an enduring passion and gratitude for the things in life that mean the most. To paraphrase C.S. Lewis: "The pain then is part of the happiness now." Overall, this is a deeply inspiring and empowering portrait with far-reaching life lessons.

A search for an identity, facing up to challenges
By Ananda Chakravarty
As soon as you open the book, you realize an amazing struggle against overwhelming odds. The imprint that is made on Steve's life is unimaginable. The inner strength that guides the author through this harrowing childhood journey, as he faces uncertainty, evil, and challenge at every corner and is pulled along as if in a mystery novel is a rare combination of character, perseverance, and drive. Critically, the book pulls the reader chronologically, slowly, through the epic struggles of a child with an open mind as he selects life decisions that have severe consequences. The identity that he seeks is just beyond his grasp until he realizes that he has the willpower and courage to define his own identity. Despite tendencies to be pulled into an even darker existence, Steve is able to fixate on kind traits, unexpected support, and the power of the written word as he turns to his books for salvation. This book is a powerful story that will move you to understand and feel the power of freedom and the torment of bondage. The revelations arrive one by one as Steve discovers his past, and through this can define his future. An exceptionally written text that will keep you glued to discover retribution of past misdeeds, miraculous surprises, and true valor. You'll be rooting for him all the way through!

Once she arrives on their land, she learns what it will take to garner their support and her life will never be the same.

As head sentry of Clan DarkStalker, Aidan Scott has more important things to do than fetch a human from a secret location. Only because he's loyal to his clan leader does he agree. Yet before long, the human female tempts him in a way he hasn't felt since his mate died five years ago.

In order to make the world a better place for humans and shifters, the pair must work together and avoid being caught by the authorities. What neither expected was to find their own happily ever after in each other.

Great read
By LTODD
This was a well-written and enjoyable read. Claire who is head of Shifter Equality Alliance is invited to visit the DarkStalker's land not only does she get lost on her way there she end up having Aidan the human hater as her guide. Their interaction in the beginning is hilarious there's lots of sexual tension between them. Aidan is hesitant to open up to Claire due to the fact human poachers killed his mate but there's something about Claire that draws her to him. Oh and let's not forget about little Chloe was also freaking hilarious. overall this was a great read I'll be anxiously waiting to read Dani and Nate book something tell me that their book is going to be scorching hot.

PURRR-FECTLY IRRESISTIBLE !!!!
By jlswainsboro/Judy Lewis
Wow! Jessie Donovan has done it again! And just what has she done, you ask? She has delivered yet another breathtaking story in her Cascade Shifters franchise. And she really knocked it out of the park with this one! I love it! If you love adventure, danger and sweet, heartwarming paranormal romance, you will most certainly enjoy this story. It is exciting, thrilling, heartbreaking, heartwarming, original, well developed, imaginative, romantic, arousing and sensual. The dialogue is smart, intelligent, witty, sassy, incredibly well written and flows beautifully. The characters are fascinating, captivating, engaging, endearing, sexy and at times, laugh out loud funny. Jessie expertly combines these elements to craft a wonderfully entertaining and satisfying read. Although it is illegal for her or any human to enter shifter land without permission from the federal government, Claire Davis had still come to DarkStalker territory at the personal invitation of Kian Murray, leader and alpha of Clan DarkStalker for a meeting to discuss her initiative to legalize shifter-human marriage. This meeting is more than important and maybe even historic. As a human and president of the SEA, Shifter Equality Alliance, she knows how vital it is to her campaign to garner support from the were-cougar clan leader. According to her data, Clan DarkStalker is her best chance at accomplishing her goal. She's intelligent, determined and stubborn - she can do this! She has dedicated the last 5 years of her life working toward this and she won't let anything or anyone interfere. Nope, not even a grouchy, handsome cougar shifter named Aidan Scott sent to escort her to Clan DarkStalker. Of all the nerve! He had the audacity to actually growl at her! Well, she would show him! She would just growl right back! For the life of him, Aidan Scott can not understand why his leader, Kian has sent him to escort the plump little human female through their territory to their meeting. He is the head sentry and guard and should only be involved with clan security, not babysitting a human female. He hated humans. Human poachers had murdered his mate and his unborn twin sons. But there was something about the female's scent that enticed his cat. It had been 10 years since a female's scent triggered both man and cat - not since his dead mate Emily. He would never dishonor the memory of his murdered mate by being with a human. Why does she insist on holding his tail? Huh? Nope, never gonna happen! He'll deliver her to Kian and never see her again. Right? Not! Never say never! Now his leader says the female must stay with clan Darkstalker for a month and assigns him as her personal guard. What? He can do this - he's a trained soldier! But what about his daughter Chloe? How will she react to this human? Oh my! Sparks fly! Attraction builds! Passions ignite! But all is not as it seems....an old enemy of Claire's and the clan resurfaces to cause harm and presents a danger to Claire and her cause but just who will save whom? I don't know....No spoilers here! You'll just have to read the story to find out what happens but I will say this.... Handsome, sexy, arrogant cougar shifter-check! Beautiful, sassy, stubborn, bossy human female-check! A precious little girl cougar who dreams to roar-check! Danger, suspense, life threatening adventure and the villainous Human Purity group-check! Heated attraction, sweet romance, a little angst and some steamy sex-you betcha! Irresistible combination for a perfect read! Although this is stand alone full length novel, there are other stories available in Jessie's Cascade Shifters franchise and I highly recommend reading them all. You will never regret it! Fabulous entertainment!

Loved it!

This is the second book in the Cascade Shifters and can be read as a standalone book. It's the story of Claire a human woman who is fighting for the rights of shifters and humans to marry legally. At the time this story takes place it is illegal. Claire's aunt has a shifter mate and has had to go into hiding in order to evade arrest. Nobody knows this is what prompted Claire to begin her fight. As the story begins Claire is on her way to meet with the leader of the cougar shifters clan, Kian. She has been given a roundabout way to get to the meeting place so she is not followed by the Human Purists group. She winds up getting lost due to a fog setting in and finally pulls off the road and sits and blows her horn figuring that the shifter (Aiden) who is to meet her will hear the horn and find her, which he does. However he is angry that she is making so much noise that could attract unwanted attention. She has to leave her car to follow him (he shifts so he can speak to her, therefore is naked) to his car. Then she is blindfolded and taken to the clan grounds.
The meeting is successful and Kian agrees to help her if she will spend a month on their land living among them. She agrees and Aiden is told he will be her bodyguard while she is there. He isn't happy about it because he is attracted to her and doesn't want to be. The tension between Aiden and Claire continues to grow until they finally give in and have sex. Aiden's cougar lets him know that Claire is their mate even though Aiden lost his mate to a poacher. He is being given a second chance at having another mate, as well as a mother for his 7 yr old daughter. But then the Purist group releases a photo of her with a naked Aiden in the woods! OMG! Talk about having your cover blown! This is a serious problem for Claire's credibility. The only way she can think of to turn this around is to turn it into a love story, but will it work? This story keeps you guessing with all the situations that come into play. Ms Donovan does an excellent job of keeping you intrigued. I couldn't put it down. Can't wait for the next book which is Dani and the bear! Woo hoo, that should be quite the story.

Review
“Geography and Plays is a cornucopia of genre: there are poems, stories, plays, portraits, and perhaps ‘essays’. In short, the collection is a one-volume introduction to the most boldly experimental period in the work of the most boldly experimental American writer of the twentieth century.”—Cyrena N. Pondrom, University of Wisconsin-Madison

“More and more clearly, Stein is being seen for what she is: one of the towering figures of modernism and of experiments with language and literary genre. Geography and Plays is a central text in Stein’s oeuvre and in literary modernism.”—Catharine R. Stimpson, Rutgers University

“Here is one artist who has been able to accept ridicule, who has even foregone the privilege of writing the Great American Novel, uplifting our English-speaking stage and wearing the bays of the great poets, to go live among the little housekeeping words, the swaggering bullying street-corner words, and all the other forgotten and neglected citizens of the sacred and half-forgotten city.”—Sherwood Anderson, from the Introduction to the 1922 edition.

From the Back Cover
This book offers readers a fascinating view of the range of Gertrude Stein's styles and her radical manipulation of genres during the most fertile and prolific years of her avant-garde experiments--1908 to 1920.

About the Author
Gertrude Stein (1874 1946) was born in Pittsburgh to a prosperous German-Jewish family. She was educated in France and the United States, worked under the pioneering psychologist William James, and later studied medicine. With her brother Leo she was an important patron of the arts, acquiring works by many contemporary artists, most famously Picasso, while her home became a popular meeting place for writers and painters from Matisse to Hemingway. Her books include Three Lives, Tender Buttons, and The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas.

Miracle year
By Robert E. Finley
Of the three great books published 1922/23--Ulysses, The Wasteland, and Geography and Plays--I rate Stein's work the highest. It is a bit daunting at first, though you will probably be amused at least by the wit on every page. But for experiments in poetry, plays, and prose, it by far outstrips Joyce and Eliot. The one essential modernist work. So advanced it is actually postmodernist in its approach to its audience, including, as it does, echoes of what is happening now around her so as to achieve a release from time and to become essentially timeless. Try it and see. This is a great investment. The first edition in four separate bindings is worth seeking out, though Stein tends to be pricey. But just read it in any edition. You'll love it. Bob Finley
