Good quote collection doesn't relate to the CD

One of my most favorite albums that I have ever listened to is Mickey Hart's CD entitled "Spirit into Sound", with its collection of nature-evoking drum and woodwind music. So when I saw that this book was available, too, I was expecting something about the music on the album and the ideas that went behind its creation. Instead I was disappointed to find instead a set of quotes about music that don't relate to the album. It is, however, a really good source of quotes about music, including some really surprising ones. If you want inspirational words concerning music, this is the place to find them.

CAPTURES THE MAGIC

It is hard to put into words how deeply music affects our spirit... and long documentary books on music don't seem to cut it, at a feeling level. This book is a choice collection of various quotes and "takes" on music and the music experience. As someone for whom playing music (and listening to others play music) is a profound part of my life.....giving me joy, keeping my energy stress-free, sharing with friends...this book is a huge validation of all the beautiful things music does for us! It's one of those books you can flip to any part of, and lift your day just by reading a page or two. Leave it out for your visiting friends! It's a great gift idea for any music lover.

Nice Coffee Book

I really must admit that I enjoy reading Mickey Hart's works. They are very philosophical, showing how music and spirituality are connected together throughout time. In this book, he mixes his own thoughts and ideas with a variety of quotes about music and some nice clip art of music, dancing, instruments and musicians. The quotes are grouped together through chapters of related concepts, such as spirituality, the cosmos and society and span almost every source from traditional Chinese, Greek and Islamic traditions to Jerry Garcia, Ice-T, Bob Marley, Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Peter Gabriel and John Updike. Interesting figures such as Nietzsche, Tolstoy, Plato, Confucious, Einstein, Ishaq ibn Ibrahim, Rumi, Mircea Eliade, Ruth Inge-Heinz, Ayatollah Khomeini, Martin Luther, Inayat Khan, Mencious, Karl Marx and many more are quoted too.
This isn't really deep reading, but it is very interesting and thought-provoking nonetheless. Every single quote will make you rethink the way you listen to music and what exactly it means to you. I think that any music fan should at least glance this book over.

I GOT THE JOB

I was apprehensive at first buying a book to prepare me for a police oral board but the book helped me so much. I did a bit more research online, reading articles and asking questions of former and current police officers. I don't know what the underlying reason is for me getting offered the job, but the Chief just called like 10 minutes ago and I got the job. It was my first and only police application. So all I can say is, the book helped because I'm not from a military background or anything like that, but I beat out over 30 other applicants.

While this book was intended for Police oral boards, I highly recommend getting this book if you have a Special Agent/Criminal Investigator (1811) or any other Federal LE oral board coming up if you have never been through one before. I purchased this book four years ago while still in the police academy. After graduation, I extensively studied the materials inside this book and was able to land a job with a very desirable agency. The questions they asked me during the oral board interview had all been covered in this book, so I felt prepared and delivered excellent responses.

A good telling of a wonderous story of a lifetime search...

I'm pretty sure that almost everybody who reads this book, "Lion" by Saroo Brierley, is going to see the movie with Dev Patel. Or, has already seen it. The book, which was originally published under the title of "A Long Way Home: A Memoir", has been reissued as a tie-in for the newly released movie. "Lion" is the story of a journey a five year old boy makes by himself from his hometown in rural India, to the large city of Calcutta. (now, Kolkata) and after being lost in the streets of the huge city, is taken to an orphanage, where he is luckily adopted by an Australian family from Tasmania. He lives the next twenty years, happily with his new family, but always remembers the tragic journey and his mother and siblings he left behind in India. With the advent of Google maps, he's able to trace his birth family's village. He then travels back to India and is reunited with that family, while remaining close to his adopted family and life in Australia.

That's basically Saroo Brierley's story and how he tells it in the book is interesting. But as I read it, I felt a bit of a remove from Brierley's telling it. Am I asking for more emotion, and if so, is that a fair request? I'm looking forward to seeing the movie next week, and there, on the screen, might be a more vivid recreation. I enjoyed reading the book, though.

Story of an amazing, long journey.

I watched the movie on New Year's Eve and loved it so much that I got the book. It usually takes me forever to read any book more than third way through these days but finished this in three days. Easy and enjoyable read. It gives more details to what happened. Some of the stories in the movie are simplified or mixed together. The book explained more of the process and revealed other coincidences that point to the divine intervention of Saroo's journey. It's written like an autobiography or a memoir rather than a novel which makes sense. It is a narrative of a long journey. The movie is fantastic and a must-see. Get the tissues ready if you haven't seen it.

Extremely useful to bring your work to another level

I purchased this book as part of an MBA course, but I loved it and feel you could get the same benefit I did by reading this book and using the associated software. As I read, I began to think back about the gut feel decisions I made in a Marketing Manager role in the past and almost cringed. I began to see how much better my decisions would have been if I had applied more quantitative methods. I have this book with me at work now and refer to it when I start to think how we will frame a client problem and what information we might need. I am not prepared to build the marketing models based on this book, but I know enough to ask the people who can and know what I am asking for.

For those thinking of purchasing this for a class or just winging it without the book I would say buy the book. You will use it again and any course will follow the software lessons which are directly explained in the book.

Michael Reich is Professor of Economics and Director of the Institute for Research on Labor and Employment at the University of California, Berkeley. He also co-chairs the Miguel Contreras Program in Labor Studies in the Office of the President of the University of California. Professor Reich has published numerous articles on labor market segmentation, racial inequality, the political economy of institutions in economic booms and crises, high-performance workplaces, living wages, and minimum wages. He is the author, co-author, editor, or co-editor of thirteen titles in labor, industrial relations, and economic studies, including Racial Inequality: A Political-Economic Analysis (1981), Segmented Work, Divided Workers: The Historical Transformation of Labor in the United States (1982), The Capitalist System (1986), the aforementioned Social Structures of Accumulation (1994), Work and Pay in the United States and Japan (1997), the two-volume Labor Market Segmentation and Labor Mobility (2008), and Labor in the Era of Globalization (Cambridge University Press, 2009).
