Tragic Pleasures: Aristotle on Plot and Emotion (Princeton Legacy Library), by Elizabeth S. Belfiore

Elizabeth Belfiore offers a striking new interpretation of Aristotle's Poetics by situating the work within the Aristotelian corpus and in the context of Greek culture in general. In Aristotle's Rhetoric, the Politics, and the ethical, psychological, logical, physical, and biological works, Belfiore finds extremely important but largely neglected sources for understanding the elliptical statements in the Poetics. The author argues that these Aristotelian texts, and those of other ancient writers, call into question the traditional view that katharsis in the Poetics is a homeopathic process--one in which pity and fear affect emotions like themselves. She maintains, instead, that Aristotle considered katharsis to be an allopathic process in which pity and fear purge the soul of shameless, antisocial, and aggressive emotions. While exploring katharsis, Tragic Pleasures analyzes the closely related question of how the Poetics treats the issue of plot structure. In fact, Belfiore's wide-ranging work eventually discusses every central concept in the Poetics, including imitation, pity and fear, necessity and probability, character, and kinship relations.

From Library Journal
Few works have inspired more argument and speculation throughout the centuries than Aristotle's Poetics . Belfiore is the latest contributor to this ancient argument. Taking into consideration significant works of the period, along with the ancient Greeks' understanding of society, psychology, and biology, Belfiore reexamines and challenges the nature of catharsis and how tragic plot affects the emotions of the audience. The author challenges the traditional understanding of the homeopathic nature of catharsis, maintaining that most modern readers do not examine the ideas expressed in the Poetics within their historical context and therefore misinterpret Aristotle's formulations. About Tragic Pleasures , Belfiore states, "I will have accomplished what I set out to do if I can suggest some new ways of looking at old problems": a noble aim, successfully achieved. For educated readers.

From School Library Journal
Starred Review. Grade 7–10—Exploring Indian identity, both self and tribal, Alexie's first young adult novel is a semiautobiographical chronicle of Arnold Spirit, aka Junior, a Spokane Indian from Wellpinit, WA. The bright 14-year-old was born with water on the brain, is regularly the target of bullies, and loves to draw. He says, "I think the world is a series of broken dams and floods, and my cartoons are tiny little lifeboats." He expects disaster when he transfers from the reservation school to the rich, white school in Reardan, but soon finds himself making friends with both geeky and popular students and starting on the basketball team. Meeting his old classmates on the court, Junior grapples with questions about what constitutes one's community, identity, and tribe. The daily struggles of reservation life and the tragic deaths of the protagonist's grandmother, dog, and older sister would be all but unbearable without the humor and resilience of spirit with which Junior faces the world. The many characters, on and off the rez, with whom he has dealings are portrayed with compassion and verve, particularly the adults in his extended family. Forney's simple pencil cartoons fit perfectly within the story and reflect the burgeoning artist within Junior. Reluctant readers can even skim the pictures and construct their own story based exclusively on Forney's illustrations. The teen's determination to both improve himself and overcome poverty, despite the handicaps of birth, circumstances, and race, delivers a positive message in a low-key manner. Alexie's tale of self-discovery is a first purchase for all libraries.—Chris Shoemaker, New York Public Library

From Booklist
Arnold Spirit, a goofy-looking dorkwith a decent jumpshot, spends his time lamenting life on the "poor-ass" Spokane Indian reservation, drawing cartoons (which accompany, and often provide more insight than, the narrative),and, along with hisaptly named pal Rowdy, laughing those laughs over anything and nothingthat affix best friends so intricately together. When a teacher pleads with Arnold to want more, to escape the hopelessness of the rez, Arnoldswitches to a rich white school and immediately becomes as much anoutcast in his own community as he is a curiosity in his new one. He weathers the typical teenage indignations and triumphs like a champ but soon facesfarmore tryingordeals as his home life begins to crumble and decay amidst the suffocating mire of alcoholism on the reservation. Alexie's humor and proseare easygoing and well suited to his young audience, and he doesn't pull many punches as he levels his eye at stereotypes both warranted and inapt. A few of the plotlines fade to gray by the end, butthis ultimately affirms the incredible power of best friends to hurt and heal in equal measure. Younger teens looking for the strength to lift themselves out of rough situations would do well to start here. Chipman, Ian

I almost cried a few times and I laughed a lot
By Debra Garfinkle
For a story about an impoverished teen on an Indian reservation who has an alcoholic father and faces bullies and racism and the deaths of several close relatives, I sure laughed a lot. I loved the written humor and the wonderful cartoons throughout the book, as well as learning something about life on a reservation. I finished this fast-paced book in two days and was sorry to see it end. This is one of my favorite young adult novels of 2007.

Richie's Picks: THE ABSOLUTELY TRUE DIARY OF A PART-TIME INDIAN
By N. S.
"Mr. President you ought to know that this nation is more a 'Tale of Two Cities' than it is just a 'Shining City on a Hill.' "
-- Mario Cuomo, 1984 National Democratic Convention Keynote Address

"It sucks to be poor, and it sucks to feel that you somehow deserve to be poor. You start believing that you're poor because you're stupid and ugly. And then you start believing that you're stupid and ugly because you're Indian. And because you're Indian you start believing you're destined to be poor. It's an ugly circle and there's nothing you can do about it.

So opines high school student and sometime cartoonist Arnold Spirit, aka Junior, who is despondent as his father prepares to shoot Arnold's suffering dog because there is no money to pay for a veterinarian's services. But a math teacher -- whose nose is broken when Arnold, in his frustration, angrily throws his generations-old math book --endeavors to change Arnold's sense of helplessness:

" 'You can't give up. You won't give up. You threw that book in my face because somewhere inside you refuse to give up.'
"I didn't know what he was talking about. Or maybe I just didn't want to know.
"Jeez, it was a lot of pressure to put on a kid. I was carrying the burden of my race, you know? I was going to get a bad back from it.
" 'If you stay on this rez,' Mr. P said, 'they're going to kill you. I'm going to kill you. We're all going to kill you. You can't fight us forever.'
" 'I don't want to fight anybody.' I said.
" 'You've been fighting since you were born,' he said. 'You fought off that brain surgery. You fought off those seizures. You fought off all the drunks and drug addicts. You kept your hope. And now, you have to take your hope and go somewhere where other people have hope.'
"I was starting to understand. He was a math teacher. I had to add my hope to somebody else's hope. I had to multiply hope by hope.
" 'Where is hope?' I asked. 'Who has hope?'
" 'Son,' Mr. P said. 'You're going to find more and more hope the farther and farther you walk away from this sad, sad reservation.' "

I'd certainly heard of Sherman Alexie. Back in my bookstore days, a young college student with whom I worked spoke of him as a god. But I'd never read any of Alexie's books since he hadn't yet written anything for children or YAs.

THE ABSOLUTE TRUE DIARY OF A PART-TIME INDIAN is a semi-autobiographical tale by Sherman Alexie, written for teen readers, that is in turns wacked-out, funny, heartbreaking, and jubilant. It is the story of an Indian kid who has survived a precarious infancy and is growing up on a reservation outside Spokane. It is a powerful story of friendship between two teenage guys who have grown up together on the reservation. It is the story of Arnold's journey after he is persuaded by the math teacher to escape the rez school and transfer to a high school 22 miles away.

And it is a tale of two cities.

"So what was I doing in Reardan, whose mascot was an Indian, thereby making me the only other Indian in town?"

THE ABSOLUTE TRUE DIARY OF A PART-TIME INDIAN portrays Arnold's struggle through that ninth grade school year to succeed at the high school in Reardan, to which he often has to walk and/or hitch. It could be that Arnold's greatest struggle involves the conflict and guilt that comes from living among the Indian kids and grown-ups he's seemingly left behind on the reservation in order to attain that success.

Arnold's humorous and telling drawings (thanks to artist Ellen Forney), which are "taped" into the diary, significantly bolster the book's boy-charm and permit us to see, in a second dimension, Arnold's view of his world.

"My head was so big that little Indian skulls orbited around it. Some of the kids called me Orbit. And other kids just called me Globe. The bullies would pick me up, spin me in circles, put their finger down on my skull, and say, 'I want to go there'."

I loved hanging out in Arnold World! Sherman Alexie and his quirky, in-your-face, first-person tale of contemporary life on and off the reservation are both important and extremely welcome additions to the world of young adult literature.

The Absolutely True Review of a Part-Time Teacher
By LauraLewWho
It seems that this book is very polarizing. This appears to be due to its treatment of sensitive issues surrounding religion and faith, race, disability, and debates raging around abuse and neglect, among other subjects.

Having taught high schoolers and college students, I found this book to be an accurate representation of the way young people perceive and relate to the world around them. Alexie touches on serious subjects, like race, gender, class, discrimination, disability, death, and family, simultaneously with his teenaged narrator's wit and humor, particularly in Ellen Forney's cartoons and caricatures. While some of this humor is crass, it is not inappropriate; nor is it any different from the way young people talk amongst themselves.

While I thought this novel could have spent more time dissecting and analyzing all of these issues (hence the lower rating), I must disagree with assessments that this subject matter is inappropriate or lascivious for middle and high schoolers. While it may not be appropriate for every pre-teen and teen to read, it is not pornographic or tasteless. Alexie, through his narrator, Junior, discusses what it means to be a young adult caught between two worlds. He does so in a way that does not omit, censor or make light of the less savory elements of puberty: his perceptions are honest and accurate. He and his friends communicate and experience life in a way that is not always "appropriate;" they discuss alcoholism, teen sexuality and disability in the same way that teenagers who are trying to find their place in the world do: as seriously as possible, and as humorously as possible when seriousness fails.

It is doing a disservice to teens to paint a picture of life that is always appropriate; life is not always appropriate. When your family struggles with alcoholism and poverty, or your loved ones die, or your friends deal with eating disorders or physical ailments they are unable to control, or your future, and that of those around you, is limited by forces beyond your control, life is not appropriate. This novel attempts to deal with the realities of life in a way that is imperfect and developing, but relatable and real despite all that.

More of everything that I enjoyed from Sentinel
By Clayton S Towery
The story picks up right where Sentinel left off and, once again, it is a wild ride for the heroes. Mrs. Foley maintains her crisp and exciting writing style that offers just enough details to help you paint the scene without bogging the story down with unnecessary details. She also doesn't let up on the secrets and suspense. I recall at least one instance where I was so excited that I was barely able to turn the pages fast enough, and that was on my second time through the book.

My main complaint from the first book is that the reader didn't get the chance to really know the characters well enough before they are put in mortal danger. I don't feel that this is a problem at all in this second book. Instead, character motivations seem to be a much bigger driving force to the plot in this book and I really felt for them.

I wasn't blown away by this book the way I was by Sentinel, but that is mainly because I had higher expectations. I expected a well written, exciting story and that's exactly what I got. Now, when is book 3 coming out? Whenever it is, it isn't soon enough for me.

Difficult to put down
By Book Maven
I finished Arbiter in record time. I could hardly put it down.

I liked Arbiter even better than Sentinel. The pacing was faster, there was more action, the characters were developed further, there were some fun surprises, and there was more intrigue. At times, I wasn't sure which end was up. :) I was very concerned with a certain anti-Joshua comment, which gnawed at me throughout the book. My questions were answered at the end. It was refreshing to see how Jet and Darien matured, and I found myself chuckling at their humorous pokes at each other. They are getting a bit better with their reactions.

It certainly feels like there are only a meager handful of Followers at the end of Arbiter. I most certainly enjoy the powerful use of gifts and I would really like to see good triumph, not by the skin of its teeth, but by an overwhelming and unstoppable surge.

You have done a marvelous job, and I feel certain that Aeo will not leave any of his own stranded. I can't wait to read the third book of your trilogy.

My foremost complaint about Arbiter is the difficulty in putting it down to engage in real life!

Arbiter picks up right where Sentinel left off, immediately diving in to Darien's decision and the consequences of it. The story maintains that fast pace throughout, all the way to the final page. There's intrigue, battles, fascinating backstories learnt, island adventures and delightful character development! The ending in this book sets up beautifully for the final book, Sage, and knowing Mrs. Foley, we won't be disappointed in that final book!

I can't recommend this series highly enough. Fast paced, dynamic characters, unexpected twists and turns, a gripping story line, and all packaged together in a way that is still clean and family friendly! As an adult, I am on the edge of my seat reading it, and at the same time, I am recommending this book left and write for friends I know that are as young as junior high. It is with great anticipation that I look forward to whatever she decides to write next!

Great guide for a Catholic funeral
By Tig
I wanted a funeral mass, but knew nothing about how to prepare for one. Most of my family are not Catholic so If I died before them they wouldn't know how to do a funeral mass either. This little book is simple to read, pick the readings and prayers. This is a step by step help book that you can leave with your important papers so that your funeral will be as you would like it to be. I found this book helpful and comforting.

Very helpful and complete.....
By Diakonos
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is assisting families with Catholic funeral Mass planning. It is inexpensive and offers the complete selection of collects, antiphons, and (to me) MOST important the recommended lectionary readings. The cost of the book is low enough that it can be given to the bereaved family to review and study, if necessary and/or convenient without concern for its being returned. I use this book on a regular basis in bereavement ministry.

Through Death to Life -Funeral Mass
By Amazon Customer
Its hard to say 'I love it' considering it to help with a funeral Mass. But, my sister and I used it to do the funeral Mass for my dad. It was very helpful and gave all the selections of readings and responsorials that we needed. It also provided choices to recommend for children vs adults. I would recommend it.

About the Author
Lola Taylor is a pen name for my, erm, "steamier" novels. I like books that make me laugh, gasp, and swoon, which is what I try to shoot for in my stories. I'm a sucker for fantasy books, particularly those involving vampires and the supernatural - especially while said vampire is sweeping a gal off her feet. I like horror movies, playing around in Photoshop, and wearing the battery down on my ereader. I have two rescued kitties, and a husband who hates to read but gives me his unconditional support, all the same. During the day, I work in a cubicle for customer service and hash out new story ideas in my many notebooks. At night, Iget down and dirty with my stories.I love Game of Thrones, reading manga, and have a slight Hobby Lobby addiction.

I'm pretty easy-going. If you want to get to know me or just say "hi," you can find me on Pinterest, Twitter, Goodreads, and my website.

Great Story
By Kim Corriher
I have thoroughly enjoyed both books in the Blood Moon series. I can't wait for the third book. The only things that kept me from giving this a 5 star rating was several instances of verb tense errors and punctuation errors that caused confusion for the reader. There was a place or two where the wrong word was used. For example, "her taught flesh" instead of "taut flesh" . This was just an example, it wasn't the exact wording used...at least I don't think so. Again, wonderful story, good suspense, intriguing characters and it moves at a good pace. The ending did not seem rushed providing plenty of time to resolve the problems and still leave the reader with a happy ending.

Blood Moon
By Sherry
I've just read the first 2 books "Blood Moon Rising". While both are fairly short they are well developed. You can't help but love the brothers and their mates. It's a slightly different take on this wolf clan but worth it. The brothers meet their mates while protecting them from witches who practice rather scary black magic. I can't wait for book 3.

Views of 19th century Tokyo: Images of a city between visual poetry and idealized reality "This luxurious Japanese bound boxed publication transcends the coffee table clich by combining beauty with information." ART news Magazine, New York

Literally meaning "pictures of the floating world", ukiyo-e refers to the famous Japanese woodblock print genre that originated in the 17th century and is practically synonymous with the Western world’s visual characterization of Japan. Because they could be mass produced, ukiyo-e works were often used as designs for fans, New Year’s greeting cards, single prints, and book illustrations, and traditionally they depicted city life, entertainment, beautiful women, kabuki actors, and landscapes. The influence of ukiyo-e in Europe and the USA, often referred to as Japonisme, can be seen in everything from impressionist painting to today’s manga and anime illustration. This reprint is made from one of the finest complete original sets of woodblock prints belonging to the Ota Memorial Museum of Art in Tokyo.

Hiroshige (1797-1858) was one of the last great artists in the ukiyo-e tradition. Though he captured a variety of subjects, his greatest talent was in creating landscapes of his native Edo (modern-day Tokyo) and his final masterpiece was a series known as "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo" (1856-1858). This resplendent complete reprint pairs each of the 120 large-scale illustrations with a description, allowing readers to plunge themselves into Hiroshige’s beautifully vibrant landscapes.

Gorgeous edition at a fabulous price
By P. Vogel
This is a beautifully presented and bound edition of one of the best editions of the Hundred Famous Views of Edo. There may be (slightly) cheaper editions available but they almost certainly reproduce later editions where printers omitted some woodblocks and some of the effects that printers used in the early editions. This book reproduces a very early edition, is bound like a Japanese book, has a great cover, is printed on good quality paper, and is wrapped up in good-looking box with bamboo-like clasps. The notes are brief but provide all the information you'd need to enjoy the prints.

At THIS price? Fantastic!
By Peabody
Taschen never fails to impress, and it certainly has yet again with this collection of Japanese prints.

This book makes a FANTASTIC present or coffee table book-- I can not tell you how it expensive it looks. I would guess the book at a price over $50 if I hadn't seen it here on Amazon for $26. The inside of the book isn't bound to the cover-- the cover is more like an outer shell to the book. My outer cover didnt come with the gold wrapper saying "taschen 30 years' as pictured, but it doesn't matter as its a beautiful hard cover. It is secured closed by a type of traditional asian style clasp as seen in the photo.

The inner book has a gorgeous metallic fiber print cover. The pages are high quality, double folded, and sturdy. The prints are all lovely natural scenes which show the beautiful brush strokes of Japanese painting. Each print is accompanied by a description of the area pictured.

This book is certainly one of the best value purchases I have made on Amazon. I highly recommend it!

A great version of 'One Hundred Views of Edo' ~
By Christopher Barrett
This book is a great gift for any lover of Hiroshige. The book binding is very interesting. The cover has a little hook (the white object above the zero) and then you open the right side of the cover (the part that says Hiroshige). The book itself comes out of the cover. It is bound with string and the pages are folded on top of each other. So there is a gap in between and printing only on one side. It is like a W - the part that opens up represents the readable portions while the opening down is the portion closed to the binding. Also reminds me of greeting cards. It's a bit odd to get used to at first. The paper is a thick parchment like material, possibly a hemp or rice blend to emulate the traditional paper. The finish has a slight sheen, likely since the traditional prints had a dusting of mica.

The prints are copies of the prints in the Tokyo Ota Museum. They comprise one of the most complete collections of original prints of the 100 views of Edo (actually printed in the 1800s). The blocks were created and the prints originally published from 1856 - 1859. They comprise the most famous of Hiroshige's works. Being such a fan of Hiroshige, I even have two framed print reproductions on my wall from this series.

The format is amazing. The first portion of the book covers the history of the era as well as what we know (which is little) of Hiroshige's life. Of course the world at large still doesn't know much about the actual process of how the artists were commissioned (if they just created the blocks and then example prints to offer to the printing companies or if they were given commissions by theaters or nobles). And of course, many original prints do not survive to this day. So a little background is welcome, and the author doesn't get too long winded.

The subsequent section deals with the prints. The print is on the right and the description on the left. What is amazing also is that the authors write not only about the style of the print or the location of the setting, but that they add tidbits such as why their are kites or why the guys is hiding his face in the corner and so on. It is these little add ons that make the prints come to life. (For the record, face hiding guy represents a man embarrassed on not wanting to be seen frequenting a 'ahem' house of pleasure).

This is a remarkable value, and it makes a lovely gift for anyone into art. Even my partner who is an artist herself, and loves the European surrealists, enjoys this book. If you know somebody who isn't quite sold on Ukiyo-e, this might be the book to convince them of the subtle beauty and deceptive simplicity of this art. Bravo Taschen, I love you guys!
