An excellent second book!
By gf
Gosh do I dare give it 4 stars? Will Nate's fans track me down and space me? OK here goes:

The first Tanyth Fairport book was powerful and moving. It had me in tears and whooping for joy. 'Call' is far more internal to her thoughts and just like some of Lowell's other work it had me grumpy at him for some of the plot developments. Maybe because I just re-listened to South Coast, the similarities in plot are too great - just told from a different side of the story. This is why it is only 4 stars. I stopped reading John Grisham for the same reason...

As a second in a Trilogy, however, this book is very well done. I won't include spoilers but it does what it is supposed to do: make me really want to hear the ending, wraps up some ending story lines and leaves the door open to several new ones.

The plot certainly is engaging, I did little else until I was finished. I am looking forward to the conclusion of the story.

Top-notch fantasy! Excellent!
By joy
Nathan Lowell once again delivers a top quality fantasy tale in Zypheria's Call, sequel to Ravenwood, and second in a planned three part adventure featuring Tanyth Fairport, surely one of the most original and entertaining heroines ever to grace the genre.Richly detailed world-building and skillfully crafted characters, along with a wonderfully interesting story line, make this one of the best books I've read this year.
If you enjoy fantasy/adventure, buy this book! And if you're a SciFi fan, then check out Lowell's "Share" series, beginning with the excellent Quartershare.

Dangerous Personalities: An FBI Profiler Shows You How to Identify and Protect Yourself from Harmful People, by Joe Navarro, Toni Sciarra

We seem to wake up to a new tragedy in the news every day―Newtown, Boston, Aurora, Columbine. So often the reporters say that "there were some signs, but nobody acted." the scary part about these tragedies is that less than 1% of criminals are incarcerated for their crimes, meaning that for every headline, there are millions of dangerous situations in which average people find themselves. On top of that, how can ordinary people identify threats from those who may not hurt them physically but can devastate their lives on a daily basis―the crazy coworkers, out-of control family members, or relentless neighbors?

In Dangerous Personalities, former FBI profiler Joe Navarro shows readers how to identify the four most common "dangerous personalities" and analyze how much of a threat each one can be: the Narcissist, the Predator, the Paranoid, and the Unstable Personality. Along the way, readers learn how to protect themselves both immediately and long-term―as well as how to recover from the trauma of being close to such a destructive force.

Anyone can be a target. Too much confidence that you can spot a dangerous person may actually make you more likely to be fooled!
By Pacific Writer
A must read! As streetwise and savvy as you are, there are still some personalities who can get past you. This is especially true if they are high on the spectrum of their personality disorder. A skilled psychopath can be deceptive enough to bypass your gut instinct, they are that 1% capable of being undetected. This book includes a very helpful chapter on protecting oneself from these people. Navarro emphasizes that dealing with them is not the same as typical people. You can't use the same approach and its validating for many who have been left confused and perplexed and exhausted. Navarro also stresses that a person is not under obligation to abused, listen to him. Not only is this book helpful for women who are dating but anyone who wants to steer clear of unnecessary trauma drama in life. Avoiding dangerous personalities is about survival and thriving. On a personal note, this book solidified for me why my ex kept coming back, like a bad cold I couldn't get rid of. I suspected it was more than just a vain attempt at keeping his options open and it was, it was about power, control, and winning. He said that I was one of the few who didn't acquiesce to him, which triggered him to be more predatory charming. My mind was thinking alot of things that sounded overly fearful until reading this book clarified that I wasn't being too cautious and suspicious at all. He wasn't someone to give the benefit of the doubt to. Rather, he did have a character flaw worth NOT ignoring and taking all the steps to stay safe and away from him, was a function of self-care rather than negative thinking. Thankful for finding this book!

A useful and worthwhile book that helps the "average" person to ...
By R. Gorey
A useful and worthwhile book that helps the "average" person to honor his or her instincts against those destructive people who often enter their lives. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we didn't need such survival guides, but the world is what it is, and it's better to be educated and prepared when these frightening predators and leeches come our way. Joe Navarro's experience as an FBI agent gives the book power and authenticity, and his co-author Toni Sciarra Poynter helps the writing to feel accessible, elegant, and informal. This isn't a clinical book which diagnoses illness and borderline personalities: it's instead a guide for those who encounter such problematical and often terrifying people, showing case studies and possible solutions to such entanglements. The checklists are thorough and some of the stories are disturbing, but that's the point. What comes across most clearly is that often (too often) we ignore our instincts against people who seem "off" to us, or who are irritating or bullying. The culture expects us to "get along," and often this means dismissing our gut-- which tells us frequently, "get away from this person." Navarro's book encourages readers to honor their feelings and to respect their conscience when they sense they are in a bad relationship, work environment, or unpleasant public encounter. There's a list of resources for those who have been abused or who are in peril in the back of the book, and the authors makes it a point to reinforce their important message: "It's NEVER okay for others to abuse, use, or harm you, and you have the right to call them on it, to escape, to call the police, or to tell them to stop." I don't think this book is only for those who have already suffered: it might help potential victims to recognize the warning signs of dangerous people BEFORE a crisis unfolds, and save themselves a lifetime of suffering, regret, or pain. Recommended.

This Book Can Save Lives
By DES
Over the last few years I have encouraged countless people to read one book to learn to protect themselves...The Gift of Fear, by Gavin DeBecker. Now I have another book to insist people read, Joe Navarro's Dangerous Personalities. I happen to have at least one person in my life that fits the narcissist personality to perfection and I have spent a great deal of time reading books about that affliction to learn to protect myself and to identify that trait in others. In this book Mr. Navarro provides a checklist for narcissists and three other particularly dangerous personality types. He aims to give you the tools to identify these individuals and at least a rough idea of exactly how damaging these people can be in your life (are they a destructive nuisance or a real danger to your life). Read this book even if you feel like you don't have these people in your life! You can never be to careful. Give this book to kids in high school or entering college. Facing a dangerous personality alone and unarmed with tools to identify them is how people get in unhealthy relationships, is how they fail to see abusers, it's how they fall prey to predators, and how they miss the warning signs for dangerous loners. Will this book fix all your problems? No. Will it provide you with the right tools to evaluate people in your life and identity the one from whom you must perfect yourself? Absolutely! Read this... Buy it with The Gift of Fear and Mr. Navarro's other great book What Every Body Is Saying. They may just save your life.

Powershift: Knowledge, Wealth, and Violence at the Edge of the 21st Century, by Alvin Toffler

Toffler argues that while headlines focus on shifts of power at the global level, equally significant shifts are taking place in our everyday world--supermarkets, hospitals, banks, television, and politics. As old antagonisms fade, Toffler identifies where the next, far more important world division will arise . . . between the "fast" and the "slow."

From Publishers Weekly
Knowledge, not violence nor money, is the essence of power in the information age, claims Toffler ( Future Shock ) as he observes "info-wars" raging in such arenas as computers, high-definition TV, electronic networks, and industrial espionage, and the fight for control of customer data by retailers, manufacturers, banks and credit-card issuers. He hails the emerging "flex-firm," a company open to many types of free-form "counterbureaucratic" organization. Toffler credits junk-bond salesman Michael Milken with making finance more competitive and less monopolistic. Assessing the "power triad" of the U.S./Japan/Western Europe, he deems European nations the least stable link, with Germany gaining ascendancy. He looks warily at "Global Gladiators"--drug cartels, Khomeini, multinationals, the Pope--who challenge the boundaries of the nation-state. Toffler's inflated, slogan-slinging probe entertains as it serves up bytes of information and insight, some provocative, some facile.

From Library Journal
Following Future Shock ( LJ 7/70) and The Third Wave ( LJ 4/1/80), this final volume of Toffler's trilogy on revolutionary change argues that the control of knowledge has become the principal means to create wealth and power. Aided by the widespread use of computers and other communications technologies, this "powershift," Toffler predicts, will dramatically alter the world's political balance. The superpowers will no longer dominate, since massive military power and control of natural resources will diminish in importance. Access to the latest information will allow developing countries to skip stages of economic growth. On the business level, executives will use knowledge as an instrument to gain control of their companies. Unfortunately, Toffler's thesis suffers from an unclear concept of power, failing to distinguish clearly between influence and the use or threat of force, and some of his claims about the power of knowledge seem exaggerated. The book's best feature is the wide range of information it contains, presented in an easy-to-read style. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 7/90.

the book which clarifies the dynamics of the modern world
By A Customer
Simply, the most comprehensive and clear view of the possible future I have ever experienced. I read the book in 1992 after having it sit on a bookshelf and collecting dust for over a year. I waited too long! This is one of the most powerful studies of the future which we are now experiencing. Many of the phenomena taking place around us are foreshadowed in this comprehensive and easy to read volume by Heidi and Alvin Toffler.
Clearly, they have looked into the future and given us a road map through which to navigate the post cold war information society which has grown like a virus out of control.
From economic boom (unparalleled post world war II economic expansion) to the rise in religious fanaticism and terrorist activity (including domestic terrorism as witnessed by the Federal Building, the World Trade Center and the attacks on numerous women's health clinics)to the acceleration of the information-communications driven economy ( the internet and its impact on wealth creation was no surprise to Powershift readers).
While many of the things that are foretold in this volume have come true, the open ended nature of those things is what makes reading this now so compelling. The advice and knowledge to be gained here is still valid. We are only in the top half of the first inning but the runs are being scored like mad!
This book serves as a great underpinning of understanding of the dynamics of the new world. Read this and you will be fascinated and energized by the possibilities of the future. The reading is easy and the writing is tight enough to give you the basic ideas and to allow your imagination and view of the future take flight.

One of Five Really Core Books on Information Age

Alvin augments our vocabulary with terms like "info-warrior", "eco-spasm", "super-symbolic economy" and "powershift." He examines the relationship between violence, wealth, and knowledge and concludes that an entirely new system of wealth creation is emerging, as well as entirely new approach to information dissemination that places most of our command and control, communications, computing, and intelligence (C4I) investment in the dump heap with the Edsels of the past. He anticipates both the emergence of information wars at all levels, and the demise of bureaucracy. He cautions us about the emerging power of the "Global Gladiators"-religions, corporations, and terrorists (nice little mix) and concludes that in order for nations to maintain their strategic edge, an effective intelligence apparatus will be a necessity and will "boom" in the 21st Century, with the privatization of intelligence being its most prominent break from the past.

Still Valid After all these years
By Robert C. Whitlock
I was fortunate enough to have been given this book to read almost 15 years ago. I was unfortunate enough not to have taken full advantage of the information inside it. I basically predicted Walmart's advance using the lowly Barcode, and the current problems that we are experiencing in the middle east due to fundamentalism - not moslem fundamentalism or christian fundamentalism, fundamentalism as a result of our fear of the inevitable pace of change as it increases evermore. The book is still relevant and I find my self quoting it and Mr. Toffler in discussions with friends and family on world affairs.

A captivating Listen
By Some guy on the web
I listened to this while commuting to and from work over the course of about a week. There were several "driveway moments" where I didn't want to stop listening. The action continuously moves forward, but the real meat of this [audio]book is in the conversations where seemingly regular people share profound insights into our society and history. It may seem funny to call it "inspirational" since it is very critical of the mainstream common perceptions of how things work--maybe "bracing" is a better term.

The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of a perfect 5 is that the author is not a professional narrator, so the different characters are sometimes hard to distinguish. Also, a minor structural quibble for naming two different characters with similar names: Josh and Jason, which is probably less a problem in print than in spoken/audio where my mind jumps ahead, and mixes up the characters.

A complex world of interconnected relationships
By Hanah
I loved Starling, which was book one of this series, but combined with Doves, that love goes up to another level entirely and becomes full-on, fandom-creating obsession.

Is this a romance novel? I'm still not sure. It is, first and foremost, a novel about relationships. Many of those relationships include sex, or include something that is more or less similar to sex, or used to include sex but don't any more. Some are only ("only") friendships, though, and others are professional working relationships. Some of the relationships are fictional (even within the fictional world of the novel), existing only in the heads of the actors, or at a step removed, only in the heads of the fans of those actors.

Sometimes it's about a relationship between a person and his job -- and that relationship can involve something that looks like sex too, including sleeping over at the office, sometimes even out of town, or neglecting your human relationships while you tend to that one.

But this isn't a love story, start to finish, about one person finding their one beloved (except when it is), and attempts to shoehorn it into that model are ... well, just awkward. It's so much more than that.

The truly fantastic thing about this series is that the relationships portrayed in the books are complex in ways that ring very, very true. Fictional relationships are often oversimplified, with the details and complications wiped out in service of a clear trajectory for the plot. But in Starling and Doves, the complexities are right there, unavoidably in the faces of the people who cannot escape them (whether they want to or not). Ex-lovers are friends and colleagues, people you cannot stand work closely with your partner, life decisions sometimes require the consent or at least benevolent understanding of a dozen different people.

In the hands of less gifted writers, this tangled web of relationships might become confusing and unbelievable. Certainly one of the hardest parts of reading these books, for me, is keeping track of all the characters and their connections. But the way Maltese and McRae have constructed the entire thing, with compelling characters who have strikingly different goals and attitudes, it multiplies my interest exponentially. I want to reread and reread until I can completely understand what everyone is thinking, exactly the way I want to do with my favorite TV shows and the characters I love from those. I don't want to just read about them. I want to know them in my own mind.

This is not an easy book, first in the way I have already described, and second because there are some scenes that are quite disturbing (but not in the sexual way that you might expect from the cover image and from the marketing of this as a romance novel). One of the underlying themes of this book is the concept of consent and the inability to say no, and I think it's dramatically enhanced by portraying that message almost completely outside of any kind of sexual context -- all while contrasting it to the ability to consent or not on sexual matters. But be warned, there are two or three places in this book where I had to put it down just to clear my head, because it's disturbing in ways that are unexpected and hard to describe.

I'm being somewhat mysterious because I don't want to give away plot, and that's for good reasons. These books are absolutely incredible, and I highly recommend them both. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

I loved this book
By Jude Sierra
I loved this book. It's gritty and complex and extremely well written. The story arcs for the characters, in context of a longer series, make a lot of sense; a lot of the issues we saw the characters struggle with in Starling didn't magically go away -- these characters need to grow and learn. Relationships are hard, and I love that we got to see them struggle to make it work, with their own issues.

The *only* reason this didn't get five stars is because it was a darker story, and there are elements that are still hard for me to process. I cannot really understand Victor, and I'm not sure I want to get into his head space.

I read quickly, so I finished this in one day. That said, I do need to go back and re-read to really peel layers back and appreciate the lovely brights spots that are in there. The ending is really a *lovely* happy ending, so the journey and it's ups and downs are so well worth it.

As with Starling, the authors do a fantastic jobs of showing and not telling -- so much so that as a reader, I was sometimes really wondering what was going on under the words or actions of a character. But I love that, because it really engaged me, it makes me think, it deepens my investment in the characters and the stories. That's not easy to do -- excellent writing.

If you haven't read Starling, go go go! I am so in love with these characters, and I cannot wait to see what happens in the next book in the series, Phoenix!

and really blackly funny, at least if you're me
By CES
Gorgeously written, skillfully plotted and paced, and really blackly funny, at least if you're me. A stronger book than Starling: nearly every dialogue scene is deliciously rich and multifaceted, and the authors make smarter choices about what to show and what to omit, and balance the character arcs better. I'm such a fan of the big, diverse, gloriously batsh*t cast of supporting characters with their complicated adult lives that bang up against Paul and Alex's in poignant, exasperating, hilarious ways.

But the loveliest and most impressive thing about Doves, for me, is the way the authors bring Alex and Paul past the happy ending of the first book, into a deeper intimacy, with different challenges. Each emotional beat and moment of growth feels painstakingly earned through actual, on-the-page experiences -- dozens of little, weird, ordinary ones -- rather than big, random, out-of-the-blue revelations. Alex and Paul work hard to learn how to be good for each other, and they work together, and the result is incredibly emotionally satisfying, real and romantic.

The Latest Scientific Discoveries Point to an Intentional Creator

Most of us remember the basics from science classes about how Earth came to be the only known planet that sustains complex life. But what most people don't know is that the more thoroughly researchers investigate the history of our planet, the more astonishing the story of our existence becomes. The number and complexity of the astronomical, geological, chemical, and biological features recognized as essential to human existence have expanded explosively within the past decade. An understanding of what is required to make possible a large human population and advanced civilizations has raised profound questions about life, our purpose, and our destiny. Are we really just the result of innumerable coincidences? Or is there a more reasonable explanation?

This fascinating book helps nonscientists understand the countless miracles that undergird the exquisitely fine-tuned planet we call home--as if Someone had us in mind all along.

He is the author of many books, including More Than a Theory and Why the Universe Is the Way It Is. An astronomer and a member of the pastoral staff of a church near Caltech, Ross has addressed students and faculty on over three hundred campuses in the United States and abroad on a wide variety of science-faith topics. From science conferences to churches to government and private research labs, Ross presents powerful evidence for a purpose-filled universe. He lives in the Los Angeles area.

From the Back Cover
"With his typical clarity, insight, and precision, Ross shows how recent scientific findings undermine naturalism while simultaneously providing evidence that there is a plan, purpose, and design in the universe."--Sean McDowell, professor, Biola University; bestselling author of over fifteen books, including A New Kind of Apologist

"In Improbable Planet, Ross holds readers' hands, leading them in a readable yet gently technical format through a compelling layer-upon-layer argument for the distinctiveness of the planet on which we live and of the preparation for inimitable life on Earth. The text is replete with references from primary scientific articles in some of the most well-respected journals, underscoring the highest academic rigor taken in substantiating the factual claims. Only the shamefully flippant could dismiss this book as being a faith-filled presentation rather than the scholarly work it represents."--James M. Tour, T. T. and W. F. Chao Professor of Chemistry, Rice University; R&D magazine's 2013 Scientist of the Year

"Hugh Ross brilliantly silences those who would claim that this Earth, this solar system, this galaxy, and this universe are nothing but a mere accident. Improbable Planet is technical yet poetic; thoroughly scientific yet faith-inspiring. I commend it to anyone who seriously contemplates the wonder of this planet we call Earth."--Pat Robertson, founder/chairman, The Christian Broadcasting Network, Inc.

"Hugh Ross takes us on a riveting tour of the scientific story, from the beginning of the cosmos to present humankind. He shows how that story pushes us toward the conclusion that purpose has driven the whole story, with the different pieces intertwined and each supporting the production of an ideal habitat for human beings right here and right now. Not only will this commend Christian faith to scientifically minded inquirers, but it will also strengthen the confidence of believers that we inhabit and participate in a meaningful and purposeful story."--C. John "Jack" Collins, professor of Old Testament, Covenant Theological Seminary

"With thorough notations and research, Hugh Ross takes us on a journey through time and space to bring us firmly back to our own planet, formed by one Creator. For those who need a scientific explanation of our universe and the life-forms within it, you will be satisfied. For those who already believe that God's divine hand created the world and all life within, you will be validated. Hugh Ross writes to stretch our intellect and to strengthen our faith. Improbable Planet does the improbable--demonstrates that the language of science does not threaten but instead augments the prose of evangelism."--Ed Young, senior pastor, Second Baptist Church, Houston, TX

Treasure Trove of Information
By Philip DiMarco Jr
Hugh Ross's voice is mostly in the background as he has done a lot of in-depth research for this book and simply presents his findings for the near entirety of the work. I appreciate this as it is clear how he interprets his findings (he does go on at the end of the work to briefly present his view) so even if you sharply disagree with him, you would have to be blindly obstinate to not appreciate the value of his research findings here.

The price of this book is a steal and despite its somewhat short length, it is full of meat and no filler. I simply have not encountered another work which has so much detailed information on its topic, in such a short span of pages. It is not the 'easiest' read, but certainly one of great value.

I have read more books from Dr. Ross than I can count. He has helped me gain a deeper understanding and admiration for the complexity of God's creations and the uniqueness of this vast planet we live on. After reading any of his books, I believe it is literally impossible for someone to walk away and not believe in God. He makes the case so compelling that even an ardent atheist should walk away believing in at least a "designer". His books are very easy to read and fascinating with the amounts of detail and mathematical statistics.

This is Hugh Ross's best written, most impressive book written for a popular audience.
By Sarah Sumner
This book should be carefully studied by atheists, skeptics, and people of faith alike. It is a book for thinkers who want knowledge and understanding. Rice University Professor James Tour (who is T.T. and W.F. Chao Professor of Chemistry) says of this book: "Only the shamefully flippant could dismiss this book as being a faith-filled presentation rather than the scholarly work it represents." In my own professorial opinion, this is Hugh Ross's best written, most impressive book written for a popular audience. It is loaded with almost 40 pages of citations that are nicely placed at the end of the book (to ease readers) and delineated in a sequential, logical way that shows, with each chapter building on the chapter before, how Earth's development happened.

The relevance of this book is that it offers clear answers to felt macro-questions
that people often ask in moments of curiosity and agitation.

* How much longer can Earth continue to support over 7 billion people effectively?
* Why are there so many species of life on earth?
* How did nature generate the leap from non-life to life?
* How did Earth go from being formless and void, to being covered by water, to being able sustain over 8 billion different forms of life?
* How did Earth become able to support physical life forms, mindful forms of thinking/feeling animals, and also spiritual/mindful/physical people?
* Why does human life need such a massive universe in which 50 billion trillion stars comprise only 1% of its total mass?
* What does Earth's history reveal about the value of human life, including my life?
* If human life is so valuable, then why are billions of people living in miserable conditions?
* What do the ongoing massive changes in Earth's conditions suggest about the future of Earth and the future of humanity?

Using the scholarly research of world-renowned scientists and refereed academic journals,
Hugh Ross presents an elaborate set of scientific facts garnered from several different scientific disciplines (astrophysics,
biophysics, chemistry, geology, biology, etc.). His main contribution is to synthesize those facts, authenticate them with Scripture,
and then show the general public (along with academic elites) what scientific truth reveals.

Here are some key lines from the book (in quotes) which may or may not be followed by explanatory comments from me:

* "Earth is much more than a planet with primitive life residing upon it. It is a planet with a very long history of life, a history that led to the
appearance of human beings. We are not constrained to a low population in a few restricted areas. Humans currently occupy all of Earth's
landmasses. We have multiplied to a population exceeding 7 billion individuals, and have achieved a high-level technology that continues
to advance on a global scale. All these features would of current human existence and civilization would be impossible unless life originated
on Earth as early as physically possible." (p. 93)

* "The anthropic principle has become the prebiotic principle" (p.21). In other words, whereas naturalistic scientists have long claimed
that the humanity's existence places severe constraints on the Milky Way Galaxy, the solar system, and Earth, scientist
Marcelo Gleiser (Brazilian Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Dartmouth College) has said that what was formally seen as
constraints is now understand to be nothing more than "the preconditions for primitive life."

* "What would be easier to take for granted than dirt? However basic is may seem, the ubiquity of dirt represents no small coincidence.
The complex story traces back to . . . "

I will end by saying this: Hugh Ross makes the history of dirt fascinating reading just as he does the history mountains and oceans, the moon, and more. That's why I have long stated that Hugh Ross, Ph.D. is my favorite worship leader. All these many facts declare the glory of God, a God so patient and magnificently wise.

I highly recommend this book and hope it is used as required reading in classrooms all over the world.
We are certainly going to use it in Right On Mission Theological Academy. See rightonmission.org.
