Mislead

The book is one of unique taste. I don't think it was bad, just I'm not interested in Night elves. I bought this book because I thought it will be about the guy on the cover Varian. When in fact more than seventy percent of it is about Night elves and their mystery assassin. If I wasn't such a Varian fan I'll give this a book a thumb down. The book title said wolfheart, so you expect to see most of the book talk about worgens and Varian but it did not. The assassin killing highborne should have been side story at best not the main piece. If the worgen and King varian plot switch places with the night elf and the assassin plot it would be a whole new story. I meant the book should be called Jarod's journey not wolfheart because it barely dealt with the subject.I'm just saying, if you want to buy this book to know more about Varian or the worgens don't. Just read wiki page. If you want to know more about the night elfs then go and buy it.I insist, the title though is misleading as hell

Great Warcraft book, don't hesitate to buy!

As an avid fan of the Warcraft series and lore, I found this book great. The story and action were detailed but doesnt drag on. The action sequences are epic and the storyline itself is well written.

Overall the book is written pretty well except for some minor pet peeves that I have.

Heres some information for you Knaak, if an object is fired from a bow, its called an arrow, if its fired from a crossbolt THEN you can call it a bolt......

But seriously, check this book out. Its a good read.

Great WoW Novell; Must Read for Alliance Players

Okay, I have to admit this book surprised me. I went in expecting Knaak to be his usual self. While I'm not among his legion of haters, I will admit that Golden is usually the superior writer. Not this time. Richard Knaak has outdone himself, taking the characters of Tyrande, Malfurion, Varian, and Maiev and bringing them to live with an interesting story about acceptance, both of others and oneself.

First, I want to address the complaints about "bland characterizations." I'm often wondering if I read the same book as some other people. Yes, Varian Wrynn does start off his usual, obstinate, annoying self. But one of the plots of this book is deconstructing that, and moving Varian past his "King/Gladiator" dichotomy and making him one whole, balanced person again.

Tyrande is a bit sticker question. In World of Warcraft, the character has done remarkably little, so her only "in-game" characterization comes from Warcraft III, where she was a bloodthirsty, borderline racial supremacist who had no qualms murdering her own people if they got in her way. In other words, she was a lot like Maiev. Does Knaak portray her differently? Yes. he treats her a High Priestess. Someone's who believes in faith and hope, and thinks carefully before acting. I personally find this characterization vastly more endearing than the one from WCIII, who I didn't care if she lived or died. To each their own. As for accusations that she just sits there, that again, is overlooking her role in the conference, and her own (admittedly short) fight scenes.

Okay, back to the review. If you loathe Knaak's style, this book probably won't change your mind. But if you've been on the fence, or merely didn't like his own author-created characters, "Wolfheart" may just change your mind.

For Alliance fans, this book gives the faction a much needed boost of morale. In the game itself, the Alliance has taken the short end of the stick in regards to the storyline. By the third act, Varian Wrynn has finally mastered his rage and (some of) his prejudices, and leads the Alliance to it's first major victory in the face of the new Horde Blitzkrieg.

My other reservation is for new readers. If you're not already familiar with the Warcraft world, you'll be a bit lost by what's going on. This book is *not* a jumping on point for those not already familiar with Warcraft lore. Try "Rise of the Horde" or "Arthas: Rise of the Lich King" instead.

In some respects this is intended to be a revolutionary book, but in other respects it is very traditional indeed. It is revolutionary in that we have developed a comprehensive analytical framework to examine and explain the rise of the Western world; a framework consistent with and complementary to standard neo-classical economic theory. Since the book is written to be understandable (and hopefully interesting) for those without prior economic training, we have avoided the jargon of the profession and attempted to be as clear and as straightforward as possible.

Douglass C. North is co-recipient of the 1993 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Science. He is Spencer T. Olin Professor in Arts and Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis and Bartlett Burnap Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. A member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Professor North received the John R. Commons Award in 1992. He is author of eleven books, including Institutions, Institutional Change, and Economic Performance (1990), Understanding the Process of Economic Change (2005), and co-author, with John Joseph Wallis and Barry R. Weingast, of Violence and Social Orders: A Conceptual Framework for Interpreting Recorded Human History (Cambridge University Press, 2009).

very valuable for understanding the world

A very, very good look at history through the lens of an economist who deserved his Nobel prize. Clearly written, simple and direct, this short book will go a long way to showing an engaged reader why growth exploded when and where it did.

Less Than Advertised

This is a classic statement of the economic "institutionalist" explanation for Western dominance of the world. The North/Thomas argument is essentially that Western Europe/North America developed a set of economically efficient institutions that promoted economic producitivity growth, institutional innovation, and technological innovation. These institutions are free markets and specific forms of property rights, legal and political systems that favor market stability and security of property, and government fiscal policies that provide government with enough resources to protect market stability and property rights. Government fiscal and political policies cannot, however, undermine market forces and property rights.

North and Thomas present a concise but well done overview of European economic history from 900 - 1700 AD to support their hypothesis. The gist of their case is that a pair of nations that developed these institutions, Holland and England, developed productive and expanding economies. Those nations that did not; France, Spain, etc., either stagnated or actually declined. The development of these institutions is shown to be a contingent and essentially fortunate process. Up to this point, I think that North and Thomas make a very good case, though there may be other crucial strictly non-economic factors. Holland and England were both, for example, relatively tolerant Protestant countries.

Does this argument, however, explain The Rise of the Western World of their title? Probably not. North and Thomas have made a good argument to explain how Holland and England developed more dynamic economies than their European competitors. But does this explain the subsequent Industrial Revolution that really made possible the Western conquest of the globe? The North and Thomas story terminates at 1700, before the Industrial Revolution. Its a reasonable hypothesis that the same institutions that drove economic success in Holland and Britain contributed to the Industrial Revolution, but the most you can argue on the basis of the North/Thomas thesis is that these institutions were necessary for industrialization. They present no arguments to prove that these institutions were both necessary and sufficient to drive the Industrial Revolution.

Substantial recent scholarship like Pomeranz's The Great Divergence has argued that 18th century Qing China and 18th century Europe were economically much more similar than believed previously. Yet, the Industrial Revolution arose in Europe, not in China. To date, no one has provided a convincing explanation.

Rise of the Western World

The rise of Europe to a position of unparalleled technological development and power has long been the subject of intense academic scrutiny. During the nineteenth century, anthropologists like Louis Aggasiz chalked up western dominance to biological superiority and social Darwinian theories. In the mid-twentieth century, historians replaced earlier pseudo-scientific explanations with what has become a canonical story focusing on the industrial revolution in England. In this oft-told tale, the development of new industrial technologies in England pitted new entrepreneurial classes against old aristocrats, leading to calls for greater representation as the entrepreneurs gained power. At the same time, the maturation of internal markets in England combined with surging population increases fueled a desire to search for more raw materials and new external markets. The rest of the story is predictable: England, Germany, the United States, and other countries located in the European cultural realm capitalize on massive productivity advantages and leave a huge imprint on the world that persists to the present day. This predictable story has had scores of adherents, including development economists like W.W. Rostow, who were convinced that there is a single linear path that countries can take to reach an advanced level of economic growth.

Douglass North and Robert Thomas, a pair of economic historians, disagree with the conventional story of western dominance and articulate an alternative theory in The Rise of the Western World: A New Economic History. The book is not only insightful but has also changed the game in economics: North and Thomas received the Nobel Prize in a move that many economists viewed with controversy since the book was a work of economic history rather than macroeconomic theory. North and Thomas begin their story in the Europe of the high middle ages, well before the conventional 1750s starting point of European ascendance. The decision to begin with the middle ages--a time that many other scholars believed was not worth exploring--was deliberate since North and Thomas believe that the industrial revolution has been an effect rather than a cause of western dominance. By beginning with the middle ages, North and Thomas are investigating the underlying factors that made European innovation, including the industrial revolution, possible in the first place. A set of developments occurred in certain parts of Europe at that time that allowed for the future benefits of innovation to be harvested.

At the heart of North and Thomas' argument is a simple but elegant thesis: first, "efficient economic organization is the key to growth"; and second, "the development of an efficient economic organization in Western Europe accounts for the rise of the West" (1). In the high middle ages, Europe lacked efficiency in economic structure for a number of reasons. The scale of economic interaction was low, with most transactions occurring around local manors or occasional product fairs. Also, questions about political control were patchy and unsettled at best, depriving Europe of much of the stability needed to promote economic efficiency. Finally, populations were subject to periodic Malthusian checks, the most notable being the Black Death that decimated Europe in the 1300s.

Despite these obstacles, however, kernels of change occurred in the Europe of the late medieval period and would germinate into efficiency dividends that Europe would later reap. Population declines combined with a weakening of the manorial system created a rise in the value of labor and saw the eventual replacement of feudalism with a fee based system for labor. In addition, the reappearance of a monetary economy introduced the problem of revenue generation for European monarchs since money was needed to fund activities. Some European monarchs, such as the famous example of John I of England, had to grant certain rights to landholders in exchange for resources; these rights became the forerunners to modern property rights. Other monarchs, such as those in Spain, expropriated power from nobles and embarked on a statist course of development. The contrasting fates of England and Holland, on one hand, and France and Spain, on the other, would be used by North and Thomas to illustrate the importance of facilitating efficient economic exchange.

The argument of the book reaches its peak in the 1500-1800 period. During this era, Europe's population was on the upswing and several new commercial opportunities existed due to the discovery of the New World. However, not every European country could utilize these opportunities efficiently because different institutional incentives existed in different countries. In England and Holland, which had protections for individual property including patent rights and the rule of law, entrepreneurs took advantage of hospitable regulatory climates to innovate, knowing that they would be compensated for their innovations. In France and Spain, where individual protections were far and far in between, innovations occurred at far slower rates and were accompanied by exploitative governmental policies, leading to much less efficient economic outcomes. The story of European dominance, as North and Thomas have framed it, is one of using institutional engineering to incentivize innovation. Europe's states (to varying degrees of success) found ways to protect individual effort and wealth, resulting in a leap in productivity. Technological prowess and later, world conquest, were results of efficient economic organization, not causes of it.

North and Thomas present a case that is both compelling and provocative. But the book (like all pieces of scholarship) does leave questions unanswered. One question relates to sources. North and Thomas cover a huge amount of territory--a span of almost 600 years. It is difficult to theorize about such a large chunk of time without leaving details out of the picture. Indeed, the authors address this issue directly in the book, claiming that they are trying to sketch out general precepts rather than write a history of the medieval period. To me, their justification seems reasonably convincing.

However, the statistical methodologist within me questions the general validity of their findings. The story of property rights and individual protections leading to innovations and efficient economic organization reached its fruition in England and Holland. Yet this is a sample size of 2, meaning that there are several modes of development that were not addressed here. France, for example, was a laggard to England, as were other states (not yet created during the time-span analyzed by North and Thomas) such as Germany; however, by the 1900s, these states had "caught-up" in a developmental sense and posed a threat to English dominance. In the twentieth century, Japan and South Korea stand out as two countries that pursued statist avenues of development where property rights were ill-defined to the point where governments would cherry-pick corporations to be collaborative partners. Today, property rights are better protected in these countries but both experienced huge surges in growth before the advent of better legal protections.

North and Thomas could counter my criticism with a simple reply: "we do not care about countries that followed the English/Dutch lead. Following contains certain advantages for development a la Gerschenkron. Innovations had originated in other places and were expertly adopted by these latecomers. We seek to explain how these innovations originated, not how they were adopted." This is a fair response but even it does not acknowledge an important truth: certain types of social outlooks are required to facilitate innovation in the first place. In medieval Europe, where the Catholic Church was the only institution that had truly broad-ranging power, innovation that excluded a Christian worldview was discouraged, sometimes with huge disincentives (torture and death through inquisition, for example). The Church's monopoly on power had to be broken before incentives against innovations were relaxed and breaking Church power took political will. Common historical arguments about the causes of the Protestant Reformation center on the desire of North German princes to free themselves of the Roman yoke. However, moving away from proximate causes of the Protestant Reformation and moving to ultimate causes, we may be able to borrow the North and Thomas framework to ask a new question: was the Protestant Reformation (and other changes in cultural and religious orientation) a response to shifts in economic efficiency like those described in this book? Or to put the question more broadly, what is the relationship between culture and economic efficiency? Are some places predisposed to innovation for some number of reasons? And where do politics and political systems fit in? These kinds of questions may seem politically inappropriate but they are important, particularly since inequality remains so pervasive in our world.

On balance, The Rise of the Western World is a much needed rejoinder to conventional stories of history that place the beginning of time at the start of the industrial revolution. The message of the book is fundamentally democratic: if you fix institutions and incentivize effort, efficient economic outcomes will follow. This maxim is especially empowering since it suggests that many of the world's resource poor, corruption-plagued, and strife-ridden countries could begin to get off this path by implementing some basic changes. However, building institutions that facilitate efficient economic organization is a necessary but not sufficient condition for achieving prosperity. As the Russian transition to capitalism demonstrates, the hard part comes in changing beliefs and expectations and engendering "trust" in people to believe that they will be treated honestly and fairly. Future research should focus on how to build this trust.

Celebrates humanity's irrepressible capacity for creativity

"The Art of Life" is another insightful book by master philosopher and sociologist Zygmunt Bauman. Those who have already read a few of the octogenarian author's brilliant Liquid Modern series of books such as Liquid Life and Liquid Times or the more recent Consuming Life will be familiar with some of the postmodern themes embedded in "The Art of Life"; nevertheless, Mr. Bauman remains essential reading for anyone who wishes to gain a more sophisticated understanding of contemporary society. Here, the author ponders the meaning of the pursuit of happiness in the context of our increasingly dysfunctional consumerist society. The book couldn't be more timely, as Mr. Bauman succeeds yet again in skillfully deconstructing the psyche of the Western world and as recent financial turmoil threatens to unravel the precarious social model of which we have recently grown far too accustomed.

Mr. Bauman surveys the idea of happiness throughout human history to find it to be an elusive idea. Mr. Bauman submits that most often, people judge their level of satisfaction through a comparison with others; in today's society, a never-ending game of one-upmanship is expressed through the pursuit and acquisition of money to acquire the status that comes from exclusivity. Mr. Bauman contends that the cult of individualism and materialism throws the middle class into a perpetual state of anxiety and robs society of its ability to solve its problems. Yet, the author finds hope by acknowledging that many people have been able to choose morality and compassion in times of extraordinary stress, citing those who helped Jews to survive in the midst of the Holocaust as a prime example. Mr. Bauman believes that individuals may yet be able to collectively dedicate their lives and society to that which is ethical; this is not unlike the artist who aspires to creating beauty and meaning in a sometimes ugly and chaotic world.

It is also worth noting the cover art by Ursus Wehrli, whose graphic is inspired by the iconic image of a middle class businessman made famous by Renee Magritte. The image is multiplied many times over from large to small, suggesting a mass society in which individuals are indistinguishable save for their ability to consume and symbolically grow larger in stature and importance than others. The concept is a perfect complement to help illustrate the book's thoughtful and provocative themes, and commendable for its function as an original piece of art in a book that celebrates humanity's irrepressible capacity for creativity.

The Art of Life

Zygmunt Bauman is best known for his thesis of Liquid Modernity. In this book moves beyond the purely sociological to offer more of a philosophical take and addresses the question of identifying meaning in our lives.

Bauman's argument centres around the question of happiness being the leitmotif of modern life and in the process presents a very good, if somewhat repetitious, account of capitalism's reliance on manufacturing desire. To quote the US declaration of Independence (which Bauman does not) life for many is about the pursuit of happiness. However, as the happiness of materialism is illusory - and hence modern life is a pursuit in which the target is never obtained. Happiness, or rather the pursuit of happiness, paradoxically (so the logic goes) constitutes a limit on the pursuance of life and in particular liberty. To be beholden to the golden calf that you hope is just around the corner is a very perverse kind of freedom.

Given that happiness does not work the remainder of Bauman's work addresses what, given the constraints of the liquid modern we are to do. In a survey of key philosophers, notably Sartre and Nietzsche, Bauman suggests we are all responsible for our own life trajectories even if that is a submission to the larger forces. The liquid modern idea is one that I find persuasive but extremely depressing - I suspect Bauman has something of a similar response. He is careful to offer an optimistic refrain - the illusion of happiness may be influential but it is not determinative, choices can still be made but these choices are hard and counter-intuitive (for the pursuit of happiness is all-embracing), but nevertheless even a choice to enter the unknown is still a choice, and that's not nothing.

Fun read

I loved catching up with the characters from the original Royals of Monterra stories. Ms. Connolly definitely remained true to the characters, their voice, and personalities. As someone who enjoyed following the births of the royal babies in England, it was fun to read about what that might have been like for them "behind the scenes".

While I did enjoy the book, I couldn't quite give it 5 stars. There were some grammar errors, and while there were main section breaks (dividing up the trimesters---chapter five's title "The Seventh Trimester" really cracked me up), there weren't any natural dividers within chapters indicating a change of location, which was kind of hard to track at times. My one other issue was with Kat's constant pregnancy complaints. Hey, I have four kids. I know how that goes---particularly that last month. And while I appreciate the author's intent to keep things as realistic as possible, it is a fiction story. Some of that was a bit repetitive and could've been left out. Just my opinion, mind. There may be others who disagree.

I've enjoyed the author's other novels and look forward to reading more.

A charming extended epilogue to Royal Date

I was a little weary of a sequel coming from a different author but this was still a very fun, enjoyable read. I fell in love with the characters from Sariah Wilson's "Royal Date" that I just wanted more of their story. Royal Delivery really functions as an extended epilogue and focuses on the fears, challenges, and highlights of a pregnancy (or two) in a loving family. This book was charming, funny, and lovely.

My only critique is that the voice of Kat was different from Wilson's version. Connolly's Kat is more sassy and witty, which although I thoroughly enjoyed didn't seem to pull from Kat's previous character development. (Of course though, this story takes place more than a year after Wilson's novel and the character could have gained more confidence.)

This is my favorite story in the The Royals of Monterra kindleworld so far. It seems like it could have been written by Sariah Wilson. The characters have same feel to them.

It is funny caring, snarky and tender as we see Kat go through her pregnancy. She is Queen Kat now. The world is watching her. The King is willing to do anything for her.

I would like to read more books by Rebecca Connolly.

I was curious about this book. I noticed how many 5 star reviews it got, started looking at the reviewers and noticed a trend. Although the reviewers almost never seem to have reviewed more than 15 books, they all seemed to have reviewed the same titles. Look for yourself. Click on the reviewers' other reviews. You will see the same books reviewed: Slow Home, Meeting You, Anything my John Locke, How to get..., Miles Away, Beyond the Beaker, Escaping life's Sting, The Darkness, and anything by some author named Palmieri. Are these reviews all the work of some agency for hire that will promote your book on amazon for a fee? I was wondering if the author would explain this.

A complete godsend for all 'other woman' out there trapped in this toxic relationship

Amazing amazing book. I would really recommend it. It has been a godsend and a bible for what can only be described as an awful situation which can put the 'other woman' in complete despair. I think that the 'other woman' has a stigma attached to her in society but what people don't realise is that she is just a normal woman who has the same dreams and desires as any other woman out there but has fallen in love with the wrong man and is often emotionally trapped there onwards. This book is great because it doesn't put down the 'other woman' and the author explains in a clear (and entertaining) manner why these men do what they do and how in the end its more often than not a losing game for the 'other woman' Great for realising your own self worth too! Couldn't recommend it more. It's a horrible situation to be in and I like her realism and hopefully it will make people realise that it's not just the wife who is the victim- the other woman really suffers and she is not in the least bit the evil seductress she is often painted to be!

Therapy for the Other Woman - how to get out

Sally Webb's book "Forget Mr. Married" is an amazing book and a whole lot cheaper than therapy. She lays out in simple steps how to break free of this toxic type of relationship and also explains why it needs to be done. She uses lists, stories and personal experiences to try and do this. She herself was once involved with a married man and she throws in her own experiences, which I feel makes the book more powerful. She talks gently and offers positive thoughts along the way. She never puts down the situation, she knows how hard it is to break free. Instead, she gently guides and persuades and tries to make it less serious. She breaks everything down into steps and categories and summarizes at the end. I think her ideas will help those women who seem to be blind to the harmful nature of their relationships with married men.
