Two new entries in the "Penguin Poets" series examine poetry at its most modish on both coasts. Carroll's East Coast disjunctive poems and hard urban prose "nods" are kinetic and ebullient. A selection of 20 years of his work overlays the worlds of Al Bundy and Hieronymus Bosch: "The shower of black infants across the infected landscape" dissolves into "the disappearance of boundaries/ on a sea, filthy and darkened with bodies." One is captivated by the imagery ("bloodstained sombreros") that depicts the "post-meltdown" nature of anxiety but disappointed that life as seen from New York City streets offers so little compassion. Lacking O'Hara's reckless sense of longing or Ashbery's wise allusiveness, these works are recommended for those who enjoy contemporary urban poetry. Shorn of the music of the Grateful Dead (he is the group's "primary lyricist"), Hunter's narrow-lined West Coast light verse has a childlike intensity. He celebrates "a beatific bebop vision": San Francisco, poetry, and the need for freedom. "Weaponed with words," Hunter's poetic consciousness is both bizarre and commonplace (e.g., "a tongue of swords" explodes "the pus sac of deep profanity"). Suggesting a blend of the Partridge Family and Allen Ginsberg, Hunter has a frame of reference of never-never land pseudomysticism ("Tantric ecstasy," "Magus of Thebes"), lost happiness, and sappy nuggets of wisdom. Like his "Sonnets in Stone," Hunter's lyrics are "primitive with punctuation, grieving for/ long-lost loves of the future, restless and/ ill-amused." Recommended for young readers and high school creative writing classes.

At 22, Carroll, already acclaimed for his Basketball Diaries, published his first collection of poems, Living at the Movies (1973), written in a brand of free verse at once hallucinatory and sharply focused. Touching, disturbing, and deeply personal, Carroll mines Catholic symbolism and mean-street and drug imagery with poignant intensity. In The Book of Nods (1985), his second collection, prose poems paying an acknowledged debt to Rimbaud depict urgent desperation in New York City and California. Penguin here combines Carroll's two earlier collections with some more recent poems and a vignette titled "Calvin's Charm." Meanwhile, Carroll is also known for three rock 'n' roll albums. RIVETING AND DEEP, LEAVES YOU STUNNED

Jim Carroll is by far one of my favorite poets. He sees so much deeper than most people. The words and even fonts he uses sucks you in and you feel as though you have been transported to another world. I first got interested in his poetry when I saw "The Basketball Diaries" with Leonardo DiCaprio, and the poetry made the movie even more powerful than it already was. I left the theatre stunned. I then went to a reading of Carroll's poetry at Seton Hall University, and was fortunate enough to meet him. He is an amazing guy. The poems are deep and their power and emotion pervade your body so that you can never forget them. People think that becuse Carroll writes modern poetry, that his poems are trash. That is certainly the opposite of what they are, and I think that his poems are more interesting than poets who write the lovey-dovey, rhyming type stuff. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to be swept away in the urban-like poetry of today.

this book is incredible. "to the secret poets of kansas" is by far one of the most wonderful poemsi have ever read. i encourage anyone who is looking for poetry to read and savor these poems, they are certainly worth it.

It is very real. It tells of life. IT IS GREAT!!!!

This book is a must have for teenagers. Jim Carrol describes the pain and suffering that he has gone through very beautifully. He is able to compute messages throughout his poems. What makes it even better is that you know that he has been through all of that past with drugs, and he has come back as a improved person. His poems show this.

Brockman has worked for decades to bring thinkers together, under the premise that great things happen when cross-disciplinary exchanges of brilliant thinking take place. Bacteria, because they are so profligate in exchanging genetic information across species, are astoundingly capable of arriving at new and adaptive solutions to environmental (including antibiotics) challenges. Brockman, I'm guessing, would be comfortable with the notion that in posing annual questions to leaders in the fields of many different disciplines he is increasing the adaptability, creativity, and problem solving capabilities of the human race. This Will Make You Smarter is excellent evidence that he may well be correct. Bacteria have something to teach us.

Almost everyone gets a say here: astrophysicists, sociologists, environmentalists, historians, microbiologists, newspaper columnists, particle physicists, philosophers, and a host of notables in other disciplines. The result is a truly provocative treasure heap of notions that just might do what the title of the book claims. The book is a bucket of pearls: succinct (for the most part!) notions with real punch are the order of the day. John Brockman's website, Edge.org, aims to represent cutting edge ideas, and the included authors often are forced to create neologisms or resurrect arcane vocabulary (e.g. Interbeing and apophenia) to express their thoughts fully.

This book is not a quick read. I left it at my bedside and knocked off a few every evening, often with a new concept, or an improved version of an old one, caroming around the confines of my cranium as I drifted off to sleep. Some ideas seemed both verbose and obtuse. Most seemed refreshing and useful. My favorite was also the shortest of all the selections, almost haiku like in intensity. In its entirety, here is Susan Fiske's (Princeton Professor of Psychology) essay: "The most important scientific concept is that an assertion is often an empirical question settled by collecting evidence. The plural of anecdote is not data, and the plural of opinion is not facts. Quality peer-reviewed scientific evidence accumulates into knowledge. People's stories are stories, and fiction keeps us going. But science should settle policy."

As several previous reviewers have noted, this book is available free online at Edge.org. Why spend ten bucks? There is one reason that you might want to consider: it's a book that you'll savage with your pen, assaulting the pages with highlighter ink, filling the margins with thoughts, and littering the essays with circles and exclamation marks. You'll pull it down off your bookshelf regularly, every time you want tangible evidence in your hands that human beings do, on occasion, have some REALLY good ideas.

Quick texts, quick reading

Description of the book doesn't make clear that it comprises over 100 small texts, all available for free on Edge.org.

In spite of that, texts are interesting and may help you on your life (or make you "smarter", as the title suggests). The book would be more useful if it contained suggestions on how to apply those concepts on daily life, or if texts were grouped in categories. They indeed follow a logic order, but grouping chapters could help organize content into blocks.

I'm just not sure if they are truly "New" scientific concepts as the subtitle suggests. But it's sure a good general guide on what some of the world's most important thinkers are focusing on their researches right now.

A Cognitive Reference Guide for the Masses

Just got this book today, so perhaps I'm breaking a rule by posting a review before finishing the book. However, I love this book's structure and breadth of topics. If you like TED, you'll love this book since both distill topics to their essence by leading experts and both leave the audience more informed but wanting more. That and the price is a bargain.

First off the structure of this book is great. 397 pages of short essays ranging from one to several pages. The table of contents (all 24 pages of it) at the beginning gives you the essay titles, authors, and a short phrase describing the essay. There's also an index in the back if you prefer more topical browsing. This structure makes this book very accessible since you can pick it up and read as much or as little as you have time for.

Each essay is self-contained and distills topics which are easy to get out into the weeds on. As the book's title suggests, rather than just factual essays, the authors try to show how elements from their field of study can be used to alter your thinking or better understand the world around you. Each essay presents its own kind of mini world view, a single data point describing not not what to think but how to think.

The range of topics is amazing as well. From the back cover, topics include:

If a book can teach common sense, this one is as likely to do so as any. Epstein, a University of Massachusetts psychologist, and Brodsky, a senior research associate at the Mental Health Center, Harvard Medical School, suggest that many "smart" people don't learn practical lessons from experience, and recommend ways to develop "experiential intelligence." Using a readers' quiz and human vignettes, the authors show how the experiential mind can subvert rational thinking, but also can supply wisdom. They describe the "language" of the experiental mind--action-oriented, attached to emotion and operating via images--and propose, contra Freud, that such influences are greater than the mind's unconscious. Epstein and Brodsky trace the role of constructive thinking in achievers, discuss its function in love and emotions, and offer guidance to parents on how to influence their children's thinking. Finally, they explain how readers can analyze their own interpretations of events, and train their experiental minds through cognitive self-therapy and meditation.

Some good ideas on how to fashion your thinking into more productive and constructive ways.

The fundamental underlying belief Epstein writes in the conclusion is that enlightened self-interest will lead us to the recognition that we live in one world and that the welfare of each of us is tied to the welfare of all. This leads us to the fact that we are emotional beings and should be aware of those things that make us feel good or bad about ourselves. He furthers the idea that love feels better than hate and it is to our advantage that we generate this emotion in the world.

Two Types of Constructive Thinking:

Emotional Coping:
1) Know which things you can do something about and which you can't. And if you can't don't waste time and energy with worry. Be Self-accepting.
2) Don't let little things bother you. Be resilient. Don't over estimate a things importance.
3) Consider yourself a worthwhile person regardless of your performance.
4) Dwell on positive events, not negative ones
5) Don't take things personally.
6) The ability to deal with failure, disapproval and with negative emotions generally.
7) Not to over-react or over-generalize.
8) Avoidance of black/white, categorical thinking and labeling
9) Avoidance of the tryanny of the "should".

Behavioral Coping
1) Be proactive rather than just imagining and or complaining
2) If you have an unpleasant tasks create a way to make the best of it.
3) Look at challenges as a opportunity, a way to stretch and grow rather than as threats.
4) Think encouraging thoughts to get you through the hard times
5) Think through carefully how to deal with unpleasant tasks.
6) Be independent able to act and trusts on ones own decisions.
7) Take reasonable, realistic risks.
8) Maintains a sense of purpose
9) Reaches out to help others and willing to accept help.

Human Beings have 4 basic needs to be balanced:
1) to obtain pleasure and avoid pain
Helpful belief: The world is a good and trusting place to be
2) to make sense out of your experience
Helpful belief: the world is predictable, controllable and meaningful that is faith in the universe.
I try to understand what is happening to me so that I can act with determination.
3) have satisfying relationships with others
Helpful Belief: That people are for the most part, supporting, accepting, and trustworthy.
4) think well of yourself
That I am adequate and worthy of respect and love.

Epstein states that the basic goal of therapy is to remove sensitivies and compulsions.
Some points are:
1) They develop from generalizations from past experiences.
2) They vary in their serverity
3) They become more intense in stressful situations.
4) Reflect faulty categorical thinking, all or nothing, .

Applying Constructive Thinking in the Workplace
1) Maintain a problem solving attitude.
Focus on solving problems--getting things done. Make sure of clear communication and what is expected of them.
2) Be a flexable thinker. Know that there is a time and place for different sort of thinking.
3) Pay close attention to inter-personal relationships at work.
4) Take advantage of serendipity. Believe that things will turn out reasonably well.

An optimistic outlook, a belief that one is in control of events, to tendency to interpret events as challenges rather than threats and commitment to long term goals.

Work on creating fewer stress events in ones life. Interpret events in less stressful ways,

Work on understanding and being aware of your intrepretations of events that trigger your sensitivities and compulsions. Identify the situations that you are touchy about. First is our construals, then secondary mentals processes and then behavioral decisions. It is possible to change your intrepretations to be more constructive. Epstein claims it is not willpower but the experiental mind that must change. Be wary of being negative and destructive about your own non-constructive thinking. It is a catch-22.

Some destructive behavior is:
1) Attacking: taking action to injure someone physically or psychologically.
2) Uncontrolled emotional expression
3) Overcontrolled emotional expression
4) Self Punishment
5) Excessive dependence
6) Excessive Independence
7) Withdrawal

This book explains how you can understand why you feel the way you do. Then, it helps you learn to improve your own self-confidence without anyone else being aware of what you are doing. Soon, you'll be able to carry on a normal conversation and people will stop and listen to you. You can do so many more things that you previously thought were for "other" people. This book will open your world up so you can really enjoy it to the fullest.

About the Author
Richard L. Scheaffer, Professor Emeritus of Statistics, University of Florida, received his Ph.D. in statistics from Florida State University. Accompanying a career of teaching, research and administration, Dr. Scheaffer has led efforts on the improvement of statistics education throughout the school and college curriculum. Co-author of five textbooks, he was one of the developers of the Quantitative Literacy Project that formed the basis of the data analysis strand in the curriculum standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. He also led the task force that developed the AP Statistics Program, for which he served as Chief Faculty Consultant. Dr. Scheaffer is a Fellow and past president of the American Statistical Association, a past chair of the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences, and an advisor on numerous statistics education projects.

Madhuri S. Mulekar, Professor of Statistics, University of South Alabama, received her Ph.D. from Oklahoma State University. She is involved in teaching, research, and consulting activities with the faculty from the college of medicine, University of South Alabama hospitals, and Mitchell Cancer Institute. She has authored an exam-preparation book for Advanced Placement (AP) Statistics and has been involved with the AP Statistics exam since it was first administered, serving on the test development committee. She is actively involved in the American Statistical Association's efforts for improving statistics education by serving on various national committees such as Advisory Committee on Continuing Education and ASA-MAA joint committee on undergraduate statistics. Prof. Mulekar has published many research as well as teaching related articles. Recipient of many grants, she directed undergraduate research program in statistics that was funded by NSF. Dr. Mulekar is a Fellow of American Statistical Association and a recipient of outstanding scholar award by Phi Kappa Phi, the national honor society.

Do not buy this horrible excuse of a textbook!!!

I took an engineering statistics course this past semester that required the class to buy this textbook. One week after class started our professor informed us that this textbook contained quite a few errors in just the first few chapters. This "textbook" is written very poorly and has errors almost every few pages. The most glaring problem was that the answers provided in the back of the book for odd questions were sometimes incorrect. As in the problem would say what is 2+2 and the back would give you 5. This caused extreme confusion and frustration during the first week as our entire class bombarded our professor with questions as to how we did certain questions wrong when we were sure they were right. In addition to the errors in the answers provided, there were many grammatical errors scattered all over the book. A textbook should never have grammatical errors much less a $200 one. Usually, the errors are easy to spot out and can be overlooked but the major problem was when they occurred in the questions. In certain ones, the word 'and' would be used when they meant to use 'or' and sometimes words were missing completely. In statistics, the answer to a question that emphasizes 'and' or 'or' are drastically different especially when its the case of combinations or permutations. Simply put, whoever edited/proofread this textbook did not do their job even remotely correct and it should not be used for learning statistics as it will make you question whether you did the problems wrong or if the book simply made another avoidable mistake. I should make note that these problems were present in the fifth edition and I am not sure whether these same mistakes are in any of the previous or future editions. Do not buy this textbook and if it is on your class materials, inform your professor of the problems this textbook carries.

This book has SO MANY errors. Every page I find a mistake, and I don't mean little spelling errors I mean they didn't add correctly, or the formula that's being presented is wrong(!!!), or their charts are labeled incorrectly.

Also most the problems start out with "refer to Exercise __" which is on some other page or sometimes another chapter, so you have to constantly flip back and forth. Even the solutions manual was like that (which, by the way, you will need, because it's not always clear how they got their answers- only to find out they did it wrong!!)

And worse of all is the tables in the appendixes are not labeled right, so the book refers you to appendix D table 4, but it's the wrong set of values, the one you actually want is printed on the inside back cover that's not labeled at all!

Did this book not get edited? I kept wondering if maybe it was a semester project for some class.

I haven't even read one chapter and I have already made my decision about this textbook. There are glaring errors every page! And I'm not talking about just the exercises, in the examples and descriptions, too! I am not normally able to spot errors in this textbook, but this is just crazy. A rip off of money. The prose is forced, boring, and dull. Sounds like someone wrote this thing at the last minute.

Great book

I was required to read this book in a college gender and inequality course. It covers a variety of topics including gender identities, queer theory, queer alternatives, etc. The book discusses heterosexuality and homosexuality and how each of these (among others) are viewed in our society. Another perk about the book is that it is quick and easy to read and the chapters are relatively short. I would definitely recommend this book for any college course dealing with gender studies. However, anyone interested in the subject would also benefit from reading it. Also, the book includes a definitions section, notes at the end of each chapter and suggestions for further reading.

Engaging and clear

In the interest of full disclosure, I know the author of this book personally and professionally. That doesn't change the fact that I think this is one of the clearest and most engaging explanations of feminism, queer theory, and their connections that I've ever read. This book is readable for people with a variety of interests and investments in philosophy, feminism, and queerness, from beginners to advanced theorists.

It can often be difficult to drill down complex philosophical ideas into a format that is accessible to a variety of people, but Mimi Marinucci has managed it.

I read this book twice to glean as much as I could from it. Full and rich and thankfully entirely readable this is a great intro to Queer Studies. I highly recommend reading the source materials listed at the end of each chapter to gain extra depth into each subject!
