Great Book!

Just finished reading this and loved it, what a great series so far! One of the things I liked about it, is that the Author does not get caught up rehashing memories for the majority of the book, the book was exactly as the description depicted with necessay short lived memories thrown in. So often 20% of a book is actually about what it is described as with the rest of the book nothing but the characters memories. It drives me crazy! This book also had a lot of action right from the start, and a good love story to go with it. My perfect kinda of book. Thanks Vanessa

Much Better

Glad I stuck with this series. Betrayal was so much better than the first book in the series. Even though I liked Jenna and Niko from Vengence, I must say that Kai (Jenna's brother, who has been cleared of killing their family) and Susana were a fabulous couple. The story in this was much more believable with all sorts of nasty bad guys and dangerous situations. Not least, the two of them escaping through the Amazon jungle and facing all of the dangerous things that go along with that. (snakes, spiders, quicksand)But on they go because every one is after Susana. Why? She has a micro-chip planted in her during an appendectomy that has data on it that is important to the continuing of the diabolical testing on humans that her father started before he died and is now being continued. So with the CIA and groups of mercenaries and Kai's friend Rafe, who has been used in the testing and drugged into thinking he has to kill his friend and get Susana and the chip, Kai and Susana must stay on the run. I have to say the attraction was very palpable between. Creating some sizzling jungle love scenes. I will now start Retribution, the next book in the series. The story of Rafe, who is not only Kai's friend, but Niko's brother, who having been used in this drug program against his will requires the love and care of his family and friends to bring him back.

Bravo Vanessa you now have another kick ass book

I always love it when I find a new author. She is great. Her books are well written, with good character development, which is always very much appreciated. The stories are suspenseful and this one is scary with very, very evil bad guys. Many times I don't want to put it down, but I have to give my racing heart a break. Bravo Vanessa you now have another HUGE fan. I do not like to include in my review a synopsis of the book because I feel that is too much of a spoiler alert. So read the entire SSU series, I guarantee you will love it. I am looking forward to reading every one of her books.

Just because...

Just because you don't like Paris Hilton as a person doesn't mean you should under-rate her diary. I am not saying I'm a huge fan... but what you all should be rating here is her diary... NOT HERSELF! So, get a grip and behave yourselves.

I would have to say that this diary is a great outlet for teens to express themselves and feel fantastic about themselves. My only problem was that instead of photos of Paris, it should use the space for pictures of the user's self.

This all being said, I would reccomend it for a teen girl who loves to talk, shop, or just loves Paris Hilton. I would have to say a no to any guys... this wouldn't be the right gift.

Surprisingly fun

I've never really liked Paris Hilton much, but this book is fun for me! It's really a diary to write in, not a book to read (hence the name) and I like writing a lot. This book actually makes me feel better about myself (and I'm not even a teenager. I'm 29!). If Paris Hilton is so big, then she must be doing a few things people like. I think it's okay for young girls and if I had a daughter, I would give this book to her when she turned 13.

I'll admit I don't agree with every quote (Like, "If a guy dumps you, he's a loser."), but it's still a very good book overall.

Surprisingly hot diary

I actually purchased 'Your Heiress Diary' because I saw it at a store for 50% off. I was a fan of Paris Hilton in the first place so I thought 'What the heck, I'll just buy it'. It turned out to be awesome! There are lots of blank spaces so you can put in clothes from magazines, your friends, celebrities you love, hair styles, your family, and much more. It actually helps you learn more about yourself, and to know that deep down inside, you really are fabulous. Paris also wrote a three page introduction talking about the diary and such. I really enjoyed the diary, and I'm still not finished filling it in, because it gives you so much space for writing, that you can write more than one or two things. I recommend it for people that like blogs, journals, and diaries. Stay HOT!

Good Content But Does Not Stand Alone

I am the financial leader for our small nonprofit organization. As I was getting my MBA, I was constantly making the adjustments in my mind to make the business content fit our nonprofit world. I did the same while reading Good To Great a couple years ago. Still, I was glad to see Collins had produced this monograph written specifically relating to the social sectors.

The booklet is only 35 pages long, and, as he says in the intro, was originally intended to be an additional chapter in GTG. It fit that format, clearly drawing on the principles of GTG, while specifically identifying some of the unique factors in the social sector that call for adjustments to the principles (such as “economic engine” becoming “resource engine.”

If you have not read Good To Great, you may not be able to simply pick up this monograph and easily follow along. As noted, it was meant to be an additional chapter to the book. So while there is some overview of the Good to Great principles given, the writing clearly expects you to be familiar with the content of the full book.

And though I appreciate the attention Collins gives to the social sector (something few business experts do), he also indicated he may not be quite as engaged in this field. At one point he states his team was not very motivated to do research into the social sector in the same way they did in their business analytics, and later states further research may reveal differing conclusions, indicating theirs was not very extensive.

However, if you have read Good To Great and work within the social or nonprofit world, I recommend the book. The content will spark thought and the final section on building pockets of greatness is worth the price alone. As the thesis for the monograph states, it’s not about a language/culture of for-profit and nonprofit, but of greatness, and that can be done in any field or sector.

Great Into to G2G Principles in Not-For-Profits and Government

As Collins says early in this monograph, "When you compare great companies with good ones, many widely practiced business norms turn out to correlate with mediocrity, not greatness. So, then, why would we want to import the practices of mediocrity into the social sectors?"

Collins spends the 40 pages of this monograph (yes, it's only 40 pages) on how you calibrate success without standard business measures, getting things done within a diffuse power structure, getting the right people on the bus, rethinking the economics of the organization without a profit motive, and how to build the brand.

Note that this little booklet is available for free on the web if you do a little digging.

He outlines the steps these institutions took to separate them from the good and made them truly great

As someone who is finishing his undergraduate career, I found this monologue not only to be inspiring, but also helpful as I prepare to enter the workforce. I am interested in becoming involved in or starting a nonprofit, and I don’t think I could’ve gotten the concepts offered in this book anywhere else. In short, I felt empowered. In the monograph, Collins wrote that over the years he recognized that many business leaders entered into the social sector only to encounter failure. Seeking to solve this, he researched and compared successful businesses and social sector institutions to see what common elements made them survive—and where they fell. He outlines the steps these institutions took to separate them from the good and made them truly great. This research birthed Good to Great, and the monologue stands as a piece addressed to the hopeful social sector leaders amongst its readers. Its overall message seems to read, “Greatness isn’t what you might think it is, and here is how to achieve it.”

Jim Collin’s writing is at once entertaining and clear. Even a junior high schooler could pick up his this piece and follow his logical and fluid wiring. His natural language and purposeful strut drew me in from the first page. Even though this was an accompanying monologue to Good to Great, he quickly ‘caught me up’ to the concepts presented in the book, relating them directly to the plight of the social sector. I was stunned by the clear comparisons in thinking that he drew between successful social sector institutions and businesses. In five very clear sections, Collins addresses separate issues that social sector leaders must address to form a successful social sector institution. They are as follows:

1. “Defining “Great,”—Calibrating Success Without Business Metrics,”

2. “Level 5 Leadership—Getting Things Done within a Diffuse Power Structure”

3. “First Who—Getting The Right People On The Bus, Within Social Sector Constraints.”

4. “The Hedgehog Concept—Rethinking the Economic Engine without a Profit Motive”

5. “Turning the Flywheel—Building Momentum by Building the Brand”

Each section’s issue addresses very important questions. For the social sectors, the first answers how greatness can be defined and pursued, the second helps show what extremely adept and effective leaders look like, the third helps show how to hire the right people, the fourth focuses on both on sustaining longevity and consistency, and the fifth talks about how to build momentum and create a bigger impact within the communities touched by a ‘social sector.’ In each issue, Collins uses real-world examples of great leaders and the decisions they made to steer their organizations towards greatness. From Tom Morris of the Cleveland Orchestra to William Bratton of the NYPD, a variety of examples edify Collins’ concepts. Combined with graphs and empirical data, his narrative walks the reader through the various hurtles faced by social sectors and businesses alike, and shows how a social sector responds to prevail and achieve greatness, from day one. Readers of this book will learn how to lead (and when not to,) how to measure success, how to recruit, how to find corporate purpose, how to rethink resources, and how to overcome crises.

I think that calling this book ‘a manual solely for social sector leaders’ would not do its utility or its masterful breadth of coverage justice, even for its 31 page length. Collins eloquently nails ideas usually learned over years of trial-and-error. The monograph is testament to the genius of Collins and Good to Great, and the practical wisdom provided inside is more than worth its time. Jim Collins has provided the missing link for many who seek to venture into nonprofit careers or business. I would recommend this book to students and professionals alike, for the skills presented in this monologue. This book, in short, teaches you how to lead a team of people towards making an impact in a way that ethically utilizes resources and personnel, and sustain performance towards a state of accomplishment aforementioned as ‘great.’ I would highly recommend this book to you if you plan to run or organize a nonprofit.

For over 20 years, KEVIN HORSLEY has been analyzing the mind and memory and its capacity for brilliance. He is one of only a few people in the world to have received the title International Grandmaster of Memory. He is a World Memory Championship medalist, and a two-time World Record holder for The Everest of memory tests. Kevin is also an author of four books, and the designer of a times table game with the Serious Games Institute at North-West University Vaal Campus. Follow the trail of breadcrumbs out of the forest of ignorance

I recommend this book.

It is one of the few of its subject matter written by a man who has competed and succeeded at passing tests in international memory competitions.
He does not sugar coat the need for initial effort spent learning the systems, and does not belabor the obvious need & benefits of practice.
He does not over-complicate the systems that he does introduce.

AFTER finishing this book a little extra reading in the subject area, proved that without using the more commonly recognized terms, Mr. Horsley covered many areas of value including the "Major System" for handling the memorization of numbers based on a method of translating numbers into sounds.

I suspect that what practice reveals to some readers..(like me).. about the gaps in their understanding, will motivate them to fill those gaps and practice some more.

We all learn differently, & for this reason Mr. Horsley's book is a decent springboard from which to launch oneself into the act of mental improvement.

The "Aha" moment before I wrote this review relates to a deeper understanding of the "Journey Method".
Be sure to visit a few internet forums that discuss the practice of memory techniques and light your own lamp out of the darkness.

There are a few points that Mr. Horsley doesn't explicitly state, that are worth mentioning.

1. The words created by the system he introduces in Chapter 12, can be used to create "Peg words" that upon creation are automatically organised in order. Create them, borrow from other people's lists if you have to and take the time to organise your source material so you rank the items/concepts to be remembered in numerical order.

2. Intimately familiarize yourself with the meaning of the word "INCONGRUOUS". It conveys in less than a sentence how to form images that "stick." (E.g. A bear with wings stuck to a honey pot")

3. After you read Chapter 9, and start trying things on your own.... WRITE DOWN your "markers" or places along the journey or "objects" within the room.
Like with anything else, that handwriting, eye, brain thing seems to add stickiness.

If you want to improve your memory... Get this book!

This book is absolutely amazing! This was the 2nd book on improving your memory I purchased (the first being Moonwalking with Einstein) and out of the 6 I have purchased Unlimited Memory is by FAR the best. Mr. Horsley gives you clear and detailed methods that “WILL” help you improve your memory. The book is VERY well written with exercise and examples of different techniques that help guide you all along the way. He also shows you/helps with examples on how you can use what you have learned earlier in the book to jump right in with both feet and start and work to improve your memory right way. I am a Programmer/DBA and am using the book to learn programming languages and complex terms and so far this book has been invaluable! This book is a winner and I 100% recommend it for anyone looking to improve your memory!

Not New or Original, Still Good

I’ve read a lot of memory books, old ones, new ones, by famous authors and experts like Harry Lorayne, Dominic O’Brien, William Walker Atkinson, Josh Foer, and many by not so famous ones, and now this one.

This book didn’t strike me as anything original or special, which is surprising given the overwhelming positive reviews. It does nothing more than take traditional memory techniques and more or less rehash them here. The presentation of the material isn’t even unique. It resembles most other books, using similar arguments, descriptions, and even clich� quotes like “if you keep doing what you’ve always done, you are going to get what you have always gotten.”

The book that kept coming to mind as I was reading this is John Parker’s Memory: Simple, Easy, and Fun Ways to Improve Memory as some of the resemblances were quite uncanny.

Both books’ introduction talk about the importance of memory and what it would be like to not have memory. Parker follows his introduction with what he refers to as “factors” that improve memory like beliefs, concentration, developing interest, letting go of stress & worry. Interestingly, Kevin follows the introduction with those same things. The words are different, but the content and message are essentially the same. The two also use cute little quotes at the beginning of each chapter and they both put a lot of emphasis on visualization and imagination.

Prior to Parker, I never really came across memory books talking about beliefs or once that put them so at the center of the memory improvement process. Also not many discussed mind maps in their books either. Sure mind maps have been taught for decades, but in “mind map” or “study skills” books, not so much in memory improvement books. It’s these elements that aren’t the focal point of many memory books, but were in Parker’s and now in Kevin’s, why I draw such a parallel.

The biggest similarity I saw to Parker’s work is in the chapter on remembering names. They both start by telling you to pay attention. They use the anecdote about how you never hear people say ‘I know the face, but I can’t remember the name.” They follow with instructions to create an image of the name; Parker uses the example of Teddy Bear & Garfield the Cat to remember Edgar while Ken uses horse & Bruce Lee to remember his last name Horsley. They suggest connecting the name to someone you already know with Parker’s example using Edgar to Edgar Allen Poe and Kevin using George to George Clooney. The list of recommendations continue with study features of the face, use the name in the conversation, talk about the name, and if these commonalities wasn’t enough, like Parker, Kevin suggests imagining the person whose name you want to remember giving you $1,000,000 next week…not tomorrow or next month, but next week.

These are some of the similarities my mind kept associating as I was reading. No doubt there are differences between the two books, but the similarities are rather interesting.

At the end of the day, this is not a bad book, which is why I still gave it three stars. If you’ve never read a memory book, you may find it helpful. But if you have, like I said it’s nothing new, original, or special. It simply regurgitates what the likes of Harry, Dominic, and Parker have already done. Yes Kevin is a memory champion, but so are many others.
