Scores of aerobic training books have been written over the years, all claiming that such training is the key to good health, fat loss and fitness. Yet, there’s a far better way to achieve such goals. On the heels of their best-selling Jailhouse Strong, authors Josh Bryant and Adam benShea added a sequel book, Jailhouse Strong: Interval Training, also destined to be a best-seller.

Aside from the compelling title, and the well-researched methods of interval training covered in this, their latest book, I just love the writing style! Speaking of all the worn out excuses folks use for not training, get a load of this line: “If you take these petty concerns and First World problems as viable reasons not to train, then bow out, quit, close this book, and fully accept your life of monotonous mediocrity.”

The authors point out that prisons around the country are closing down weight rooms because of the fear of creating “super criminals”. Thus, the rise in popularity of interval training. They point out, “Driven by the need to survive, and, in some instances, thrive in a highly competitive environment, prisoners rely on intuition to find the physical movements that produce real strength and conditioning. On the prison yard, scientific inquiry and conjecture is a luxury. Real fitness and functional movement is a necessity.” So, prisoners are left with only two elements with which to train, the ground beneath them and their own body weight. Burpees, pushups, bodyweight squats and other such exercises became critical techniques for getting stronger, faster, more agile and “tougher” in the inescapably hostile environment of the prison.
It also gets you ready for the 3:am brawl near the gas pump! Explosive, MMA style, no-holds-barred, brutish fight for survival, after all, is not uncommon in some neighborhoods. Bryant and benShea have chronicled many interval drills that incorporate boxing and wrestling movements. Out of curiosity, I went through a few of them. Slowly. Ever so slowly. For me, they were brutally difficult. I am convinced that I need such drills badly.

Then, the authors got into barbell and dumbbell interval complexes. Said they, “Think of barbell complexes as being likened to a no-rules, knock-down, drag-out fight at your local kick n’ stab bar.” Did I say brutal? Believing that “Fat and flaccid is no way to go through life”, they cite literally dozens of example barbell complexes that will test the mettle of the toughest guys and gals!

Strongman intervals, sprint intervals, football intervals, and even the “purgatory of the strip mall chrome palace” are all meticulously covered. The final quarter of the book features interval workouts developed by several of the nation’s top strength and conditioning coaches. All of them brutal.

Not for the average fitness enthusiast. Not for the average anyone! Should you venture into the pages of this book, and find the courage to go through some of the intervals, you will either turn your back on training altogether, and accept the life of monotonous mediocrity, or you will discover the animal within.

Blast Fat and Get Toned Fast!

I consider myself an advanced athlete. My style of training is a mix of heavy bodybuilding and powerlifting. Josh is my conditioning coach and since we've dialed in interval training, its undeniably helped tone stubborn areas, carve out a well defined feminine physique and is actually fun to do! It shocks your system and blasts fat fast! You'll never catch me doing steady state cardio again. I can work in tabatas and HIIT circuits in half the time and get faster and noticeable results!! Strap on a heart rate monitor and watch the calories burn by doing workouts in this book a few times a week!

Eric L. Johnson (Ph.D., Michigan State University) is trained as an academic psychologist and is Lawrence and Charlotte Hoover Professor of Pastoral Care at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. Patterns and Variations for Rhythm Guitar

Nice book which includes a CD. It's focus appears to be helping one sort out rhythmic patterns for various Brazilian styles. However, there is no tab whatsoever in this book, contrary to a couple of the other reviews. There's only some simple chord diagrams. This is fine for simply focusing on the rhythm w/out having to worry about reading the music. But in most of the complete songs, you'll have to read notation.

The organization of this book is very simple and very effective- Chapters on Samba, Bossa, Choro, Frevo, and Baiao, each with rhythm pattern examples and variations, then song, accompaniment, and chord/melody examples.
What makes it stand out is that the examples are well-chosen, and seem relevant even before context is introduced.
While the material doesn't require virtuoso level playing, it's not a beginner book- the examples do require reading ability, and some of the rhythms will need to be worked out at a slower tempo, and sped up gradually.
One gets the impression that the author is steeped in the subject matter, and the book is informed by considerable experience-no Dick Louden 'how-to' book- It's the real deal, and well worth the price and the time it will take to work through it methodically.

great storytelling!

excellent page-turner! what a great storyteller Orson was. I read it at the library first. Then, I purchased a collectible copy to add to my library for future reading. Great story! I never saw the movie, not sure I wan to after such a great read.

A Mystery, a Riddle , an Enigma

The origins of this novel are almost as mysterious as that of the central character in the motion picture of the same name. Arguments abound as to whether or not Orson Welles actually wrote the novel. Welles certainly signed the book contract with the publisher and held the copyright, but some sources suggest that Maurice Bessy wrote the novelization of the original screenplay written by Welles. Biographer Simon Callow, an actor in his own right, interviewed Robert Arden, who played the role of Van Stratten in the movie, and he indicated that Welles was the author and Bessy merely worked on the French translation of the book for its publication in that market. Later in life, Welles disowned the entire project and dismissed the book. Was he being truthful or was he simply playing coy with an interviewer?

Welles may have been disgusted with the entire project to the point where he wanted to deny any association with the movie and the book. As a motion picture, "Mister Arkadin" began as an ambitious international production. As the filming progressed, however, the lavish budget was cut and some of the latter sequences in the film appear to be cheaper than those filmed earlier. The producer became angry about costly delays and had the film taken away from Welles during the editing process.

As a result, multiple versions of the film were issued. The various scenes were assembled in different sequential orders depending upon the print of the film that was being exhibited in a given country. Welles had intended to tell the story using a series of flashbacks, but this technique was scrapped in one version of the finished film which was edited in strict chronological order. In some markets, this chronological print of the film was shown, but, later prints surfaced which incorporated the flashbacks envisioned by the director. Alternate takes of certain scenes in the film were made employing different performers in key roles as part of an effort to sell the movie to cinemas in different European markets. In some English speaking countries, the movie was released under an alternate title, "Confidential Report." The production disputes delayed the American release of the film for almost seven years. It opened in a handful of art house cinemas and never found an audience.
That is a shame because the beautifully photographed film is great escapist fare set against the background of numerous European locations.

Nonetheless, the story is fascinating. "Mister Arkadin" owes much to the success of Welles in Carol Reed's production of "The Third Man." The role proved to be so popular that Welles was hired to repeat the role of Harry Lime in a British radio series (the program took care to overcome the difficulty of Lime being killed in the conclusion of the movie!). Key elements of the plot of "Mister Arkadin" can be traced to three specific radio scripts that Welles wrote. The radio material was reworked for the screenplay which involves amnesia, smuggling, blackmail, murder, romance and a paranoid multimillionaire who is either trying to discover his own identity or erase his past.

Some sources indicate that the Arkadin character may be based upon Basil Zaharoff, the armaments tycoon, who was known as "The Merchant of Death." Zaharoff was played by the late Leo McKern in the memorable television series "Reilly: Ace of Spies." Whatever the case may be, the plot of the book is intriguing. Film fans may notice that the novel expands upon the plot of the movie in some respects. For example, there is more of a back story for the Van Stratten character. Many of the comedic touches from the film are reduced or eliminated. The book is written as a straight forward manner. There are no lengthy flashbacks as the book proceeds in chronological order.

For those who enjoy the book or the movie, it should be noted that Criterion Films has released the definitive print of the motion picture on dvd. The film has been restored and restructured to match the script of Welles as much as possible (arguably, no one knows how Welles may have altered the film if he were permitted to edit it), alternate takes have been preserved on a separate disc with plentiful production notes and bonus materials, including interviews with associates and biographers of Welles who were familiar with "The Lives of Harry Lime" radio series and the film "Mister Arkadin." The Criterion edition even includes a copy of the novel.

As far as books go, "Mister Arkadin" is a good thriller that can stand on its own without necessarily watching the movie. If you enjoy international intrigue and suspense, you are likely to find the book to be an entertaining read. One final note, the novel is available in various editions from different publishers, so seek out the title in whichever version is convenient.

PreSchool-Grade 1-In this second book featuring the star of Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! (Hyperion, 2003), the shoe is on the other foot. Once again, the action starts on the title page, with the pigeon's joyous discovery of a hot dog. However, his initial delight is dampened when a small, wide-eyed duckling appears and asks, in a seemingly innocent manner, "Is that a `hot dog'?" The interloper's younger status is conveyed not just through his tinier size, but also through his dialogue, which is presented in smaller, rounder font. Though the duckling never directly asks for a bite, his incessant questioning-"Would you say that it tastes like chicken?"-infuriates the pigeon. Ultimately, the duckling's subtle approach proves successful, and both birds happily share the treat. Children, especially those with younger siblings, will have come up with this obvious solution long before the pigeon does. Willems's deceptively simple cartoon drawings convincingly portray his protagonist's emotional dilemma, from his initial joy to his frustration and struggle over what he wants to do versus what he knows is right.

PreS. In this follow-up to Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus [BKL S 1 03], the wheedling pigeon with the short fuse meets his match. "Oooooh! A hot dog!" he cries, as he zooms in for a landing on the first page. Before he can enjoy his scavenged treat, though, a little duckling scuttles over and begins asking numerous questions: "Is that a 'hot dog'?" "What do they taste like?" The pigeon loses his temper in a wing-flapping rant before the duckling innocently suggests that they share the dog, thus sparing the pigeon the frustration of having to explain the taste. Share it they do, but the pigeon knows he has been had: "You know, you're pretty smart for a duckling." Once again, Willems uses artistic minimalism (each page shows only the birds and the hot dog, rendered in basic lines) and spare, hilarious dialogue to convey surprisingly realistic emotions. Preschoolers who recognized themselves in the tantrum-throwing pigeon of the previous title will also see themselves in the calm, shrewd duckling that knows just how to get his way. Gillian Engberg

Mr. Willems, you've done it again!

As an elementary school librarian, every year I try to have an ice-breaker story for the children on their first visit to the library, especially the kindergarten students. Last year my first-day read aloud was "Don't let the pigeon drive the bus". It shocked their socks off to see the librarian stomping her feet and yelling "Let me drive the bus!" Some students requested I read it every week all year. Thank you for providing another "pigeon story" for me to start this year. Although the "hotdog" story doesn't provide opportunity for interaction that the "bus" did, it provides me the chance to stomp and yell "It just tastes like a hot dog, okay!?" Then later in the school year, when my real personality comes through, they won't be frightened. They will see me as the pigeon. The first grade students who watched my pigeon antics last year will be expecting me to top last year's performance. They will love "The pigeon finds a hotdog". I do. Please keep the pigeon stories coming.

Love waited

Got out that box of tissue.
Clay Cantrell blaims Willa Ross for causing his sister's death.
Willa was living with her aunt and uncle at the time,her cousin Paige was the person driving the truck at the time of the accident.
Paige was her parents heart, and so natural Willa's uncle believes his own child and throws Willa out of his house.
When Willa's uncle died, Willa went to the funeral, and her aunt Tess sees her and hurrys to talk to Willa and Tess has a heart attack.
Paige accuses Willa of causing her mother's heart attack.
Tess has a fit in the hospital and the police stop Willa and escort her back to the hospital.
Clay is waiting. He gives Willa a choice, get Tess's ranch back in order and leave or answer to him.
Paige confesses her horror of being blaimed for the accident, and almost tearfully wishes Willa's friends had stuck by her.
But Paige doctors the books and makes it look like Willa has been robbing them.
Now Clay sees the way the tide is flowing and he sides with Willa and Tess.
But Willa never tells Tess her daughter killed Clay's sister and put the blaime on Willa, against Paige.
And Clay finally admits what he heart already knew, he loves Willa and he asks for forgivness.

Could had been better.

Nice story, and had a nice pace right up until the last chapter. There were so many details given, that I expected the same for the unfolding of the "lies". Well it was so rushed, I though my book was missing pages. Then it ended. I felt cheated. :-(
I believe the author didn't know how to deliver the final uncovering of the plot and just rush the book leaving out things.
I have read another of the author's book, at least on this one there is more conversations.
I would not read it again or recommend it, unless you are really bored.
All I can say, this book could had been 5 stars if only longer, not rushed at the end, and more explanation of how things ended.
