Consistently strong collection serves as an useful intro to Castoriadis

Since I read this on my Kindle, the first part of my review will address briefly reading it in that format. The second part will review the book itself.

This book is well-Kindlelized with an active index and easy transition back and forth to the footnotes. The major issue is the ease of getting back and forth to the references as these are at the end of each chapter. Overall I found this an easy book to read in this format.

This series of books published by Routledge is intriguing in format. The idea is to present an thinker such as Ranciere, Badiou or Castoriadis and to introduce/comment on their work by having a group of scholars write short essays centered around the concepts/themes of those thinkers. For an author like Castoriadis who developed not only his own terminology, e.g. magma, teukhein and legein, as well as put his own characteristic spin on more common words, e.g., autonomy and democracy, such an approach proves very useful.
The book focuses on Castoriadis major work, The Imaginary Institution of Society (IIS), and could easy be used as an introduction/guide to that demanding read. For the most part it ignores his earlier, more activist writing (with the exception of the entry on Democracy). It is also a useful intro to some of Castoriadis' later writings translated into English as Figures of the Thinkable, World in Fragments and Philosophy, Politics, Autonomy (I can recommend the latter as a good Castoriadis' starter book).
Finally, it serves as an intro to some of that community of scholar/activists who have devoted themselves to working out some of the issues of Castoriadis' thought. Suzi Adams, Johann Arnason, Mats Rosengren, Karl Smith, Ingerid Straume all struck me as worth more of their own work.
All in all, for anyone interested in ISS or in Castoriadis as a whole, this is a very helpful read.

9 year old daughter says this could be her favorite Kingdom of Fantasy so far!

My 9 year old daughter loves these books, she pretty much only reads the Kingdom of Fantasy ones, we now own every single one. She loved this book as much as all of the others and has already re-read it several times. She was waiting on pins and needles waiting for its release and was so excited. Below is what she had to say word for word.

"My favorite genre is fantasy and this has a lot of it in it. And I also like humor which is also included in this. It also has a lot of action and some cliffhangers. It is just as good as the others, I can't really decide which on is my favorite because ether are all really good. You are always meeting new characters and it is really fun. This one I think had a really good story in it and I am glad the author didn't re-use another story from the series. It's really good and it could be my favorite but you always have to wait till the next one to decide."

About the Author

Sue Holwell joined Cranfield University in�1998 and taught on the MSc in the Design of Information Systems and MBA at the Royal Military College of Science. In April 2002 she joined the Systems Department at the Open University. She is currently Senior Lecturer in Information Systems, Centre for Complexity and Change, Technology Faculty, Open University.

Dr Martin Reynolds joined OU in 2000. He previously worked with Gerald Midgley at Hull University co-authoring Operational Research and Environmental Management with support from the Operational Research Society. His interest in critical systems came through PhD work on participatory natural resource-use appraisal in Botswana, based at the Institute for Development Policy and Management (IDPM).

great chapter on Asoka who embraced Buddhism and did a great service to it

A well researched and well written book on Indian religion and Buddhist history. Sadly Buddhism is largely extinct from the Continent, except for perhaps the Tibetan refugee and Government in exile. India now is Hindu and Muslim, with the Muslim religion outpacing the Hindu due to their uncontrolled birthrate and lack of family planning. The book has a great chapter on Asoka who embraced Buddhism and did a great service to it. The chapter on pali books also very illuminating. (written on palm leafs.) This book is available online for free. Check it out for yourself, do not take my word for it.
