An Eye-Opening Tragic Tale That Made Me Think

I was intrigued by the idea of this book: that Cinderella was a victim of abuse. I had toyed with this idea in my own life and when I saw that Joseph Burgo had expanded on the idea, I was even more intrigued. I read his blog and consider his wisdom one of the buoys of my own recovery from abuse. Choosing to read this was a no-brainer.

This is an excellent book. I have no hesitation in giving it five stars. The crafting of the fairy tale itself- the detail, the dramatic tension, the characterization, the story-telling, the voice -- all of it was excellent. The author did a very good job of telling this familiar story in a fresh way as far as the language went. For that alone, it would have ranked high with me.

But there is another layer to this that went beyond just a story. Each character is a victim or an abuser or both. I was very impressed with how the development of each character's motivations and behaviors were presented artfully and accurately. In some places, it was with a light touch -- there were clues that pointed to a childhood sexual trauma that were not fully explained -- yet in others, the fullness of the pain, suffering and darkness was almost shocking. I caught myself thinking, "Where is the Disney princess? She would be so happy and cheerful!" Then I reminded myself that in a setting of abuse, there are no sunshiny princesses. Dr. Burgo does an excellent job of portraying the reality of the thought processes in those who are abused.

I thought the development of the Prince's character was brilliant. The detail in the development of his narcissism was astounding. The bits about the horse, the razor, his preening on his wedding night -- all of it -- was accurate and shocking and believable.

I was moved by this story. I caught myself identifying over and over again with Cinderella. When I did, I was equally repulsed and relieved. Did I really think those same things too? When I admitted it, there was a sense of relief and acceptance. This was especially true when she began harming herself. For me, this was the most illuminating. The darkness in me, just as it is in Cinderella, is the fruit of the abuse. But unlike her, I don't have to succumb to it.

I think that if I had read a clinical book or a self-help book about how to identify my own destructive thinking, I would not have been so moved. This book proves what I have long believed: that stories are powerful and can present truth in a way no lecture or treatise or blog post can. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is either dealing with abuse in their past or is helping others in it. I do NOT recommend this book, however, to those who want a fairy tale. If you want the happily ever after ending, then you are missing the point.

Painfully compelling

To start with I must say I am a big admirer of Dr Burgo and his blog. Similar to another reviewer, his blog has been a great support to my emotional journey. I would recommend anyone who wants to further their understanding of themselves and those around them to visit regularly.

As soon as I read that `Cinderella' was on its way I knew I had to read it. To me the dark side to these timeless fairy-tales is clear - the depth and contrast that is not showcased in the lives of these Disney princesses, hidden from view. It is the classic `present only your best side' that so many are familiar with. I always knew there was more to that 'happily ever after' than we were all led to believe!

`Cinderella' is a really compelling read which is laced with the voices of many tormented women, and men confessing their inner thoughts and disturbing memories to the author. Not only does this validate and reassure the reader (as it sadly mirrored some of my experiences) but it also gave a deeper insight into the multifaceted personalities of the other characters - all victims and abusers in different ways. It is remarkable how pain can twist a person, make them think, feel and behave in ways contrary to their fundamental values - a life changed and warped by other peoples actions. There are many complex psychological references that I feel I may have only begun to understand. I will be re-reading this book a few times as I process and absorb the more subtle subtexts (for example I have so many questions about the illusive fairy-godmother).

Painfully believable - this is the true story before it became stripped back, polished, censored and edited for general consumption and mis-sold as a 'once upon a time' make-believe fantasy (after-all don't many people allow the passing of time to strip a memory of its broken and aching realities so they are left with the most pleasing display of an envious anecdote?). Many scenes are both compelling and deeply uncomfortable. Painfully familiar - this is the story that gave me moments of clarity and self-compassion amongst the regretful realisations. It raises issues I don't want to admit to identifying with, flooded with shame and self-loathing.

Highly developed characters, rich depth of various issues of abuse and inter-personal relationships in a dysfunctional family (many of us are familiar with), well-crafted plot and written with an accessible voice.

Would recommend this book to those who are intrigued by the more complex, darker motivations in life, those who have experienced abuse and those who have attempted to keep their head above water as they drown in a relationship with a narcissist.

Please write on Dr Burgo - I am hooked.

Interesting take on an old tale for psych buffs

I'm not sure everyone would go for this rendition of cinderella but people with an interest in psychology will find it very interesting. It was an enjoyable read on it's own merits but is structured around a fairly meticulous development of the characters to reveal their psychological workings, defenses, and likely responses if the fairy tale played out for real people. That means showing the sordid underbelly of the events--how Cinderella is damaged by her abusive family; The narcissism that fuels the prince's world view; the ways the characters become enmeshed in each other's defenses, and their own internal perspective, thoughts and feelings.

For those who read it without any understanding of psychology, it will probably read like a dark, subversive version of the tale and could still be enjoyed at that level although some of the insights might be lost.

Others might find it pointlessly negative---a downer version that dampens an innocent childhood story. Fair enough.

I liked it a lot and think a whole genre of these types of rewrites could be really interesting...

About the Author

Born and raised in Detroit, MI, Ted Wallingford began working with information systems at the age of 7, when his father brought home a used Timex Sinclair 1000 computer and a notepad of hand-written BASIC programs from a garage sale. Good choice for investigating VoIP for your organization...

It seems like Voice over Internet Protocol, aka VoIP, is starting to become much more mainstream. Not only are businesses switching over, but now you can set up your home phone access to use VoIP (aka "broadband") technology. Ted Wallingford has done a nice job in explaining the business side of the possibilities in the book Switching to VoIP - A Solutions Manual for Network Professionals.

I think the biggest thing to keep in mind when approaching this book is the target audience. While there are a few books out there on "internet telephones" that talk to the consumer, this isn't one of them. The tag line of "for Network Professionals" is the key here. While you don't have to be a network guru to read this book, some level of familiarity with network and telephony concepts would help. Someone either working with the communication systems in a company or heading up a communications department would be a perfect match here. You'd probably even do alright if you just have an interest in the subject, as Wellingford does a good job taking what can be complex material and making it understandable. An admirable task in itself...

What makes this book stand out from other books I'd expect to see is that it doesn't just dwell on jargon and theory. There are a number of projects included in the book so you can get your hands dirty actually working with the technology. Add to that the fact that the author uses an open source PBX system called Asterisk for the exercises. So now you have no reason in terms of cost for not diving right in.

Although I'm not necessarily the target audience for this book, I'd have no problem recommending it to someone looking for material that covers this subject. The book is very well written, and after finishing it you should have a very firm grasp of the essentials. You might even know enough to start yourself on your next career path... :)

Pretty Good

As the telcom manager for a rather large enterprise (45,000 users) I try to keep up on the various books on VoIP and this one is pretty good. It is designed towards someone who is knowledgeable about voice and data but not necessarily someone how is an expert in either subject. It also does a very good job of not focusing on any one type of technology but covers H.323, SIP and Cisco amongst many others and gives you a good sense of each flavor that is available. I would recommend it for anyone looking to deploy VoIP.

Excellent Guide for a VoIP Migration Project

I enjoyed this book a lot and also read Cisco Press's "Taking Charge of Your VoIP Project" by Walker and Hicks.

Here's my frame of reference on reading and reviewing this book. I am a sys admin at a 75-person company, and I am generalist (Windows servers and desktops, LAN/WAN/wireless, switches/routers/firewalls, VPN, security, training, helpdesk, and phones). This book was targeted at someone like me, who has a networking background but little phone background. We have a full-featured TeleVantage phone system that runs on a Windows server with a 24-channel T1 line to the phone company. I know enough about it to run our phone system, but I don't know much about the underlying telephone technology.

I am considering upgrading to VoIP, because my PCI phone cards (T1 card and telephone station cards) in my phone server are old and no longer supported by new versions of TeleVantage. However, TeleVantage supports VoIP, so all I would have to do is remove the PCI cards and instead use my WAN connection to the outside world and my LAN as my connection to my phones.

This book does a good job explaining traditional telephone technology and then VoIP. The author wrote the open-source VoIP software called Asterisk, so he can speak authoritatively to VoIP. If you are so inclined, you can follow his labs (Projects) throughout the books and build your own VoIP system on Linux and Asterisk. I felt the book had the right level of technical depth for someone of my background.

I thought he also does a good job making a project of moving to VoIP very practical in a business setting. He covers things like current infrastructure assessment, design, doing a migration in chunks, how to minimize user impact, selecting a VAR (value added reseller) and measuring up-front cost and ROI.

Finally, I appreciated his objective perspective on the public telephone network and PBX vs. VoIP, that both have their advantages and disadvantages, and that while implementing and supporting VoIP can be complex, it can be achieved successfully if be done correctly.

My take-away is that I gained a general understanding of how the public phone system works from the point of view of my business, and I now generally understand how VoIP works. I can now speak somewhat intelligently and generally ask the right questions of my TeleVantage software provider and when selecting a SIP provider.

Am I comfortable starting my VoIP migration project based on these two books? Yes. I still have a lot to learn and will make some mistakes, but at least I understand generally where to start and how to proceed.

Awful quality! BEWARE!

I am very disappointed at the quality of this book. I bought it from Amazon, and the quality of the print is so bad it looks like a bootleg copy. I asked for a replacement, and it is exactly the same. The pictures are completely black and most of them are unintelligible. I am asking for a full refund now.

I am totally new to the semiconductor industry and this book seems like a good introduction to dive in.

As a process integration engineer knowledge of semiconductor processes is critical and this book seemed like a good first step for people with no background.

It has chapters ranging from semiconductor processes to reliability physics.

Agreed there are a few grammatical errors here and there but the knowledge is rich.
