About the Author
Rob Dunn is a professor in the Department of Applied Ecology at North Carolina State University and in the Natural History Museum of Denmark at the University of Copenhagen. He is the author of The Man Who Touched His Own Heart, The Wild Life of Our Bodies, and Every Living Thing, and his magazine work is published widely, including in National Geographic, Natural History, New Scientist, Scientific American, and Smithsonian. He has a PhD from the University of Connecticut and was a Fulbright Fellow. He lives in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Profound, interesting, easy to read book for anyone who eats

Humanity has become dependent on three species of plant, Rice, Wheat and Sugar for over half its calories, and on Corn, Soybeans, Potatoes, Palm oit, Barley, Casava and Peanuts for another 25%. Each of those species is largely cloned and growing in extensive mono-cultures, readily vulnerable to decimation by a variety of pathogens. The Irish potato famine of the 19th century demonstrates what can happen when pathogens invade a mono-culture. We have not escaped from that kind of threat on a global basis. So far we have lucked out because of unsung heroes who have devoted their lives to preserving seeds and the knowledge of local farmers. As big agriculture takes over, that knowledge is becoming privatized and restricted to maintaining the profits of those companies. As the challenges to human survival increase, the number of people holding the fort is decreasing.

This book includes the history of the banana, almost entirely made up of clones of a single subspecies and clonal rubber trees whose sap is still the sole provider of function sidewalls for all tires. Both histories include rampant devastation of earlier clones and present day threats to them and the national economies which depend on them.

Rob Dunn's book uses true stories to illustrate the magnitude of the challenges to our food supply and what we can do as consumers to ameliorate the potential crisis. His telling is fascinating, understated and without histrionics. He is a scientist who lives according to what he has learned. In this book he shares his insights and some of the successes already underway.

I read dozens of carefully selected books each year. This is one of the top five books I've read in the last 20 years.

Our Imperiled Food Supply

The author does a nice job of making scientific knowledge accessible with regard to mankind's increasing reliance on a limited number of species of crops. Loss of biodiversity causes vulnerability to plant pathogens that have periodically changed the course of history. Philosophers say man started down the wrong road when he changed from hunter-gatherer to agriculturalist. The story of Cain and Abel may be a symbolic representation of ancient awareness of this. Very enjoyable read.

This book by NCSU's Professor Dunn will forever change the way you think about the foods you eat, the mechanisms and policies that brought them to your local grocer, your place in the web, and how frightening fragile the entire system is. History is presented with a fresh light and the future is considered in ways you may not have considered before.

This was a great short story about Jez & Lucy. Their chemistry is smoking hot & you can see that they're connecting on several levels. The ending was a great surprise & I'm so happy it played out that way. I would love to see more of them in the future & watch as their relationship continues to grow. About the Author
After receiving her B.S. at Southern Connecticut State University, where she was certified as a teacher of secondary reading, Laraine Flemming went on to earn an M.A. in English literature at Boston College and a Ph.D. in American literature at the State University of New York in Buffalo. During her career, Flemming has taught students from elementary to graduate school covering subjects as varied as reading and writing, American literature, time management, speed reading, and study skills. She began writing textbooks while working as Director of the Reading and Writing Center at Dean Junior College. In need of a reading textbook that had lots of exercises combined with genuinely thought-provoking readings, Flemming decided to write her own.
