Mick Middles biography is an excellent and comprehensive attempt to catalogue the rise and fall of the legendary Manchester band. Fuller than John Robb's book - The Stone Roses and the Resurrection of British Pop - Breaking into Heaven: The Rise and Fall of the Stone Roses traces the roots of the band back to the early childhoods of Ian Brown and John Squire through the punk inspired Patrol era to the heady days of 1989 when the Stone Roses looked likely to conquer the world. The portrait of Gareth Evans, the Stone Roses' ebullient manager at the height of their success, is amusing and revealing, and the postscript on Ian Brown's up and down career since the demise of the band is also fascinating. A must for any true Stone Roses fan.

I thought this might be an insightful book about the "rise and fall" of The Stone Roses. Instead I received a literary course in band management. It's too bad Mick Middles could only speak to a bitter and hindsightful ex-manager to piece together such a complicated yet simple story. Had more interviews been done with the band I might have enjoyed the book. In short this book would be appropriate for anyone interested in exploiting a young talented band. For those who are interested in understanding The Stone Roses, buy another book.

It's best to start with a solid background in classical Latin (Wheelock's) and then move to this book when you want to start reading Medieval authors.
As another review noted, Sidwell gives good backgrounds on the changes that occurred in medieval Latin - again, medieval Latin is not some other language, it's simply Latin with some changes in orthography, grammar, and usage. In fact, without a solid background in classical Latin, this book would be almost worthless (except for its dictionary in the back - and even there, most words are defined in terms of their classical Latin equivalents).
Best of all is the appendix with the changes between classical and medieval Latin categorized. I refer to this appendix often when I come to an odd construct in the Vulgate, and it very often answers my questions.
I unfortunately have limited experience with the texts in the book themselves. What little I've looked through seem good, and the introductions are useful; but I've heard several negative comments about some of Sidwell's text choices (one person whom I respect said his choice of texts was "ghoulish".)
But, from my own personal experience, it's a good book as long as you don't try to use it for more than it's designed to do.

Expensive, but good

This is an excellent resource for students of medieval Latin. A particularly useful aspect of this reader is that Sidwell provides texts with thematic coherence in mind; thus in each section arranged according to period, texts are arranged according to particular topics (e.g. the Norman conquest; scholastic philosophy; courtly literature). His introductory notes are good, and provide not just an introduction to the period, but to the individual topics he's selected; and his texts are chosen to provide a coherent representative introduction to the primary sources for each topic. Thus, for example, those wishing to deal with the eleventh and twelfth century will find a selection from the most important texts on the crusades, the investiture conflict, the Norman conquest, and new developments in theology and philosophy (among other topics), along with concise but useful overviews of the issues involved; in each case, the texts and excerpts are put together to make some sort of sense in terms of content and relation to the larger issues, not just as examples of Latin. Sidwell also provides a brief glossary of specifically medieval vocabulary at the end of the book, along with with useful linguistic and historical notes, and extensive vocabulary and grammar aids for each of the texts.

Far too many errors!

Having been put in charge of teaching an advanced course for PhD students at my university, I was initially happy to find this book, because it contained so many of the topics I wanted to include. Once started on the course, however, my students and I have found it a struggle, and "another error in Graebel" has become a running joke.

Simply put, the density of typos and errors in this book is simply unacceptable. Some sections are so ridden with errors that I could not expect my students to make sense of it, so I have had to write up whole new versions of sections 3.10, 4.5 and 4.6 so far (and we still have 3 chapters to go...). Some errors are obvious, but others are very confusing: sign errors in equations, sines becoming cosines, and misleading figures are typical cases. Then there are frequent and annoying cases of symbols being redefined with the opposite sign from one section to the next without this being mentioned. Not helpful!

That said, some sections of this book are very nice, but the quality of presentation is very uneven. In parts the presentation is so compressed that it makes Landau and Lifshitz seem loquacious. Also, the figures are unimpressive througout. I don't think a textbook needs flashy colours to be good -- a simple figure is often more instructive -- but some figures in Graebel are simple without being instructive. Also, a couple of images of real flows or at least some streamline plots wouldn't hurt, just to make the student aware that this isn't a maths book.

I probably won't use this book again next year, although I'm not currently aware of a single book containing the same variety of material. I would say to the author: get a young co-author for a second edition, clean up the mess and improve presentation, and this could become a fine book. As it is, the quality reflects poorly on Wiley.

This quite possibly the worst text book I have ever used. It was full of errors, not only in the text, but in the equations themselves. Few examples and mediocre explanations. AVOID AT ALL COSTS if possible.

Riddled with errors

A very bad textbook, riddled with errors. Perhaps the most common error I observed was in references to equations, where the wrong equation was referenced more often than not (at least it felt that way), leaving the reader to figure out which equation the author meant to reference, and making the reader doubt all equation references.

This formal analysis leads to an understanding of the respective texts' thematic, symbolic, and cultural meaning--specifically, antiheroism as a choice of life. Similar methodology is then used to reveal the relationship between the poetry of Montale and Giorgio Morandi's etchings and between Montale's poetic persona, Arsenio, and the novelistic characters of Svevo and Pirandello. Each of these comparisons brings to light a shared image, that of the clown (or antihero) as a mocking self-portrait of the modern artist.

Social Media might be well suited for the communications classroom, but the book is also a highly readable user’s guide to improving social media outreach. The author provides valuable practical insights, especially in the “Formulating a Strategy” section, to help make various social media platforms relevant to your brand. There is enough theory to ground users in the environment without feeling like a lesson plan. I started in the middle of the book in an effort to move to the practical tips right away, but found myself drawn back to the history and theory portions, all of which are presented in tidy, interesting overviews. Clear, efficient and well organized, Social Media is a reference tool that will be useful again and again. I really enjoyed the examples and recommend downloading the digital edition, as the ample links and extra reference material are easier to use this way.
