There are much better videos and literature available online for free.
By Amazon Customer
The “book” is actually a collection of poorly rendered photographs attempting to show the production of paper cartridges. It is incomplete, full of grammatical and spelling errors, and is confusing with its descriptions in conflict with the photographs. It was never proof read.

A list of required materials at the onset includes “salt peter” but this ingredient is never addressed in the text. It would have been helpful to know prior to purchasing this pamphlet (I simply can’t bring myself to call it a book), that unmodified reproduction revolvers like we all have, can’t use these cartridges until modified to accept the longer profile of the paper cartridges.

A price of $4.95 would make it a worthwhile addition for the photographs, but at $17 you money is better spent elsewhere on vetted literature of the period.

Very good book! Like how the author takes, what seems to be, a complicated task and makes it easy to understand. Also appreciate the extra pages for notes and the label samples in the back.

Death by Rheumatoid Arthritis, by Carla Jones

More than a million Americans suffer from rheumatoid arthritis. The numbers of deaths from this disease continues to climb each year. Late diagnosis and treatment for arthritis related, cervical spine deterioration, is one reason for some of these deaths. Celia Veno, a Bucks County retired woman and mother was one of those fatalities.

Celia Veno, a woman in her 70’s, began, experiencing mysterious migraine-like headaches and atrophy. After her general doctor and neurologist failed to determine the cause of these symptoms, a new rheumatologist was called upon. He immediately diagnosed from a previous cervical spine x-ray, that she had advanced spinal cord syndrome. Unfortunately, the findings came critically late. She died two months later.

Eighty-six percent of people with rheumatoid arthritis have the disease in their neck. (cervical spine). “Death by Rheumatoid Arthritis”, lists signs and symptoms of spinal instability, due to advancement of the disease.

Carla Jones is dedicated to bringing awareness to the undisputed fact, that anyone can die from complications related to rheumatoid arthritis, and to promote early detection of cervical collar damage, for those with the disease.

Eye opener
By Angeldust
Wow this book was such an eye opener. As a RA patient I have not even heard of or even considered going for x- rays on my spine.Im currently suffering from immense pressure in my neck and spine. We definitely need to consult my doctor about this and I'm surprised that my doctor did not mention going for x- rays when I saw him 2 days ago.I have tried the fungus therapy and for the first 6 months of the therapy everything seemed to be going well, however this did not last long.I am currently back with my previous rheumotologist who is putting me back on the methotrexate and revellex.I am currently 25 years old and was diagnosed when I was 18 years. I fully agree that early diagnosis, treatment and consistency with taking the medication is key to overcoming this disease.

A must read for the RA patient and his or her family!
By Lana M Barhum
As a sufferer of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and its deliberating and unpredictable nature, I can relate to Celia Veno's struggle and her family's many questions about this still quite confusing disease. Carla Jones writes about her mother's brave struggle with RA and its most complicated physical symptoms. Celia's RA resulted in spinal cord syndrome and unfortunately by the time she was diagnosed, surgery was not an option. Carla's message is bring about understanding and awareness of cervical instability in RA patients. It is a must read for the RA patient and his or her family members. A simple x-ray could have given the Veno family an answer and prolonged Celia's life and ended her pain, but without a proper understanding of the symptoms, the patient and their family cannot alert doctors to spinal cord syndrome. Part of the proceeds for this download go to the Arthritis Foundation.

True Heart, by Marissa Moss

Since age sixteen, Bee has loaded freight for the Union Pacific Railroad, all the while dreaming of being an engineer. Bee loves the railroad: from the roar and clatter of the wheels against the track to the names like True Heart, Roaring Wolf, and Coyote Special to the low blast of the whistle—whoooo-whoooo. Then one day, Bee gets the chance to drive the True Heart all the way from Cheyenne to Chicago. A seamless mix of history and fiction, True Heart is a story of the American frontier, of wanting something so much you can’t think of anything else--and of the little-known work of pioneer women who made the American railroad a reality.

From Publishers Weekly
Moss (Rachel's Journal: The Story of a Pioneer Girl; Amelia's Notebook) uses her flair for capturing girls' voices to tell a remarkable and exhilarating story. A turn-of-the-century photograph of an all-women work crew for a railroad inspired this tale of a teenager's first time driving a train, an experience that launches her career as an engineer. Newly orphaned in 1893, 16-year-old Bee takes a job loading freight on the railways to support her eight siblings. Moss evokes the love of trains that keeps Bee in the engineer's cab every spare moment, watching and asking questions, and her joy at driving for the first time, when an injured engineer and a trainful of impatient passengers pressure the station manager to give her a chance. On the final spread, Bee recalls that inaugural experience: "I felt so free and strong, galloping across whole states in my iron horse, blowing my whistle for all the sky to hear." For his first children's book, Payne uses mixed media in a crisp, realistic style. He so meticulously defines the action that the illustrations seem frozen in time, oddly tranquil: unexpected angles and tight close-ups create arresting compositions. This book will be welcomed by a wide audience: train lovers, frontier buffs, all girlsAand any adult who, like Bee, can "remember wanting something so much you can't think of anything else." Ages 5-9.
Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal
Grade 2-4-An engineer for the Union Pacific at the turn of the century reminisces about the event that made the dream of driving trains become a reality. As a freight loader, Bee took every opportunity to sit in the cab and watch the engineers work, and was occasionally offered a chance to drive from one station to the next. One day on a run from San Francisco to Chicago, a group of bandits shot and injured the engineer at the controls. Bee volunteered to complete the run and the station manager agreed, marking that day as the start of a new career for Bee. This comfortably paced story has a familiar feel to it and a secret that will disclose itself to attentive readers: Bee is a woman. The use of nicknames throughout and an avoidance of gender pronouns draw the attention to the heart of the story-Bee's dream-rather than her sex. Accompanying the author's note at the end of the book is a black-and-white photograph of a group of female freight loaders that inspired this book. The mixed-media illustrations are realistic but softened with sepia tones, as if with age; and except for a couple of double-page spreads, full-page illustrations on the right face text on faux-stained parchment backgrounds. Visually and textually, this quiet story is a treasure.
Nina Lindsay, Oakland Public Library, CA

From Kirkus Reviews
A deeply satisfying story of longing and hard work fulfilled, inspired by an obscure historical photograph. Bee loves the railroad: the sound and color, the sweep past the wide world into the cities, the wonderful engine names, such as True Heart and the Coyote Special. When her parents die, she finds that, with eight siblings to care for, loading freight for the Union Pacific in Cheyenne in 1893 pays far better than taking in wash. She's strong, and gets hired to load the trains. But what Bee loves most is to pepper Ole Pete, the engineer, with questions; he lets her drive the train a bit, back it up, and couple it to other cars. When Bee gets the chance to drive a train, she takes two of her female crew to stoke the engines, ``blowing my whistle for all the sky to hear.'' The language is homespun and direct, with Bee's desire and love for the railroad clear. The text faces the full-page illustrations; occasional double-page spreads float the text on top of the image, as in one dramatic scene where ghostly wagon trains parallel the train on its run. The mixed media paintings have a burnished quality, while the textures are beautifully tactile. The text never mentions Bee's gender, but Moss provides a note about her inspiration and preserves another tessera from the mosaic of women's history. A rousing and romantic tale. who looked like a boy
By Shelli
This is a work of historical fiction about a girl who found her passion working for the rail road at a time when that was considered “men’s work.” The major down side to this story was that the protagonist, who looked like a boy, was not referred to by any pronouns that were feminine until later in the read; making it a bit confusing. Up until that point I thought it was a tale of an older boy who was looking for his chance to be taken seriously as a train conductor. The illustrations were exceptionally well done with beautiful coloration and expression. The book would have been better received if the author had made a point to mention Bee’s gender earlier.

That's a cool story
By M. Heiss
Make no mistake -- we got this book because of the train on the cover. My kids are still train fanatics, designing hypothetical layouts and timetables now that they are past the Thomas the Tank Engine stage and well into the Lionel stage.

The story itself is interesting, and shows a beautiful America criss-crossed by the commerce and convenience that the railroad brought. Great story about a curious kid who learned enough to help out when an emergency struck.

Outstanding illustrations -- and I just realized this is illustrated by C. F. Payne. Looking through it again, I can see the size distortions that mark his style, but they are subtle in this book.

I'm going to get more C.F. Payne books.

Fascinating
By Herbert
The Actor is a first novel by Douglas Gardham, who, I learned from a recent radio interview, is an engineer by profession who at mid life, rather than undergoing a personal crisis, has created an opportunity to realize his life long dream of writing and publishing his first novel.
The novel tells the story of a young college student in Ottawa, Canada, Ethan Jones, who through his relationship with his close friend Mila Monahan discovers his latent talent for acting when Mila introduces him to amateur "little" theatre.
As a result of some positive critical comments "a natural", Ethan decides to risk everything and moves to Hollywood with the dream of establishing a film career and stardom.
The book catalogues his many adventures and misadventures and disappointments, together with his amateur dreams for acceptance being exploited by the callous "dealers" of tinsel town. Ethan continues to soldier on learning from experience, while running the full gamut of acting roles as he climbs the rickety ladder of success, culminating at the Academy Awards.
Be prepared for an exciting ride with an avalanche of surprises combined with labyrinthine plots with many turns and twists, and considering this is his first book, Gardham shows he is a master of story telling and creating the unexpected.
The book is published by IUniverse, one of several industry "self-publishers" who assist and advise new authors in publishing and marketing their manuscripts so their efforts can be enjoyed by the reading public, akin to the "Idol" and related TV programs which bring young entertainers to the public's attention.
If you're looking for an exciting way to enjoy your relaxation this summer "The Actor" certainly fills the bill. While it may not be a melodrama on the scale of Dickens's "Great Expectations" (it's 390 pages), it certainly is a "Pip" of a book. Herbert

Page Turner

The Actor will entice you in from the very first pages. You will then begin a fascinating ride that will capture almost every emotion you can think of. There will be a few times when you may think you know where things are headed. But that won't last long and won't be correct. The very well crafted storyline has some delightful twists and will keep you enthralled to the last page. This is one heck of a first novel!

Engaging and Innovative!
By zg1990
A story about what it takes for a young man to chase his dreams of becoming a Hollywood movie star. The story shifts between different points in Ethan Jones' life and the hardships of discovering his true calling and his relationships with others. Murder, true love, and determination to succeed outline the books major themes. Through Ethan's inner psyche, the novel allows the reader to seamlessly enter the mind of an aspiring actor and his ability to cope with loss, rejection, and the often over-analyzed lifestyle of an up and coming Hollywood actor. The writing describes the character's emotions, settings, and action in an accessible and unique voice that is refreshing and enjoyable to read. Without giving too much of the plot away, the suspense of some of the events that take place in the novel, leave you utterly shocked and excited. A highly recommended read for anyone who loves a good thriller and is interested in the Hollywood lifestyle!
