Fascinating
By Herbert
The Actor is a first novel by Douglas Gardham, who, I learned from a recent radio interview, is an engineer by profession who at mid life, rather than undergoing a personal crisis, has created an opportunity to realize his life long dream of writing and publishing his first novel.
The novel tells the story of a young college student in Ottawa, Canada, Ethan Jones, who through his relationship with his close friend Mila Monahan discovers his latent talent for acting when Mila introduces him to amateur "little" theatre.
As a result of some positive critical comments "a natural", Ethan decides to risk everything and moves to Hollywood with the dream of establishing a film career and stardom.
The book catalogues his many adventures and misadventures and disappointments, together with his amateur dreams for acceptance being exploited by the callous "dealers" of tinsel town. Ethan continues to soldier on learning from experience, while running the full gamut of acting roles as he climbs the rickety ladder of success, culminating at the Academy Awards.
Be prepared for an exciting ride with an avalanche of surprises combined with labyrinthine plots with many turns and twists, and considering this is his first book, Gardham shows he is a master of story telling and creating the unexpected.
The book is published by IUniverse, one of several industry "self-publishers" who assist and advise new authors in publishing and marketing their manuscripts so their efforts can be enjoyed by the reading public, akin to the "Idol" and related TV programs which bring young entertainers to the public's attention.
If you're looking for an exciting way to enjoy your relaxation this summer "The Actor" certainly fills the bill. While it may not be a melodrama on the scale of Dickens's "Great Expectations" (it's 390 pages), it certainly is a "Pip" of a book. Herbert

Page Turner

The Actor will entice you in from the very first pages. You will then begin a fascinating ride that will capture almost every emotion you can think of. There will be a few times when you may think you know where things are headed. But that won't last long and won't be correct. The very well crafted storyline has some delightful twists and will keep you enthralled to the last page. This is one heck of a first novel!

Engaging and Innovative!
By zg1990
A story about what it takes for a young man to chase his dreams of becoming a Hollywood movie star. The story shifts between different points in Ethan Jones' life and the hardships of discovering his true calling and his relationships with others. Murder, true love, and determination to succeed outline the books major themes. Through Ethan's inner psyche, the novel allows the reader to seamlessly enter the mind of an aspiring actor and his ability to cope with loss, rejection, and the often over-analyzed lifestyle of an up and coming Hollywood actor. The writing describes the character's emotions, settings, and action in an accessible and unique voice that is refreshing and enjoyable to read. Without giving too much of the plot away, the suspense of some of the events that take place in the novel, leave you utterly shocked and excited. A highly recommended read for anyone who loves a good thriller and is interested in the Hollywood lifestyle!
