Love You to a Pulp by CS DeWildt is one strange trip through the Kentucky countryside with a glue-sniffing, skull-cracking, squirrel-hunting private detective by the name of Neil Chambers.
When Chambers is approached by a father who wants to get back his (adult) daughter, he takes the skeptic’s view of the case. But he has no idea the chaotic fever dream that he’s about to stumble into. Vicious rednecks, more vicious rich people, crooked sheriffs–Neil will fight them all. F*** solving the case, this is about survival.
“DeWildt stands alone as a wicked wizard of crime fiction. Love You to a Pulp serves up heart and depravity in equal portions. Bold, brash, and completely original.” — Tom Pitts, author of Hustle
“Chris DeWildt is the first honest-to-God heir apparent I’ve read to the rural noir master Jim Thompson.” — Joe Clifford, author of Lamentation
“DeWildt has a tendency to drag his characters, as well as his avid readers, through the most despicable of circumstances, yet with Love You To A Pulp, that tradition lets a little redemption seep in through the cracks. A balance DeWildt handles like a pro. This book is full of masterful imagery from a provocative author at the top of his game, piled high on a bullet train of violence that demands that once you start watching, you don’t look away.” — Brian Panowich, author of Bull Mountain

I Loved this Book to a Pulp
By Dman4227
“ Most people don’t know the value of a real treasure. They only know how to use something until there’s nothing of it left, nothing salvageable anyway” -Love You To a Pulp by C.S. DeWildt
This novel has all the ingredients of a solid noir novel:
Glue sniffing PI? Check.
Unsavory characters? Check.
Low-lives at every turn? Check.
Quick paced plot that flies by at a blistering pace? Check.
The plot of this beauty centers on Neil Chambers, a glue sniffing PI who is hired to bring the local pill-peddling pharmacist’s daughter back to hm. What makes this different from your typical plot? The daughter is a grown woman and not too eager for any type of reunion. When Chamber’s questions into this matter lead him to what looks like an obvious murder that is mysteriously labeled a suicide by the local medical examiner, he goes all-in during his quest to find answers to what type of seedy connections are being used to hide the truth.
But rest assured, as in any noir novel, our main character is far from valiant in the eyes of others. As he meets a woman who may have some answers for him, he reports “She turned and eyed (me), as if sizing (me) up or undressing (me). Either way she looked vaguely disappointed”. You have to love when a book when its protagonist elicits emotions like that.
As Chambers floats in and out of his glue induced stupors, he offers us flashbacks into his days as a youngster. We witness his mother have a parade of men visiting her bedroom while his father sits by quietly watching television. We witness his father using him as a bare-knuckle fighter to bring extra money into the household. We see his father take his own life for reasons beyond Chamber’s comprehension. We see Chambers meet the future love of his life…which only brings new trouble to him.
Both plot lines are extremely enjoyable to read and the flashbacks offer great foreshadowing into the Chamber’s present day mindset. As the plot continues, we start to see him lose control of is mind and his ability to control himself. The end of the book reaches a satisfying climax and leaves the reader looking forward to more novels by DeWildt. The great news for me is this is my first exposure to him, so I can jump right into some of his previous works.
Another butt-kicking winner from All Due Respect Books. I am starting to notice a pattern, are you?

....truly believing that it could not happen to them.
By Review Girl @reviewgirlhmm
A true rural noir, trs noir and in parts trop noir. If you are looking for redemption then this is not the book for you. But if you devour books that run with a parallel back story and truly shocking crimes then you will not be disappointed.
De Wildt has created truly flawed characters, trapped as much by their own history and personal choices as the history of the ghosts in the landscape. Poor, rural and broken the main character Neil Chambers PI, is a glue sniffing, tragedy in a crumpled suit, hurtling around in a Cutlass as he pieces together the puzzle of a job. A job that illuminates his past and reveals his own personal story.
De Wildt’s use of descriptive techniques are sensational. Through the eyes of our glued up character the reader is given a visual treat akin to the hyper awareness of drug induced attention to the minuscule. Neil’s glue and brawl induced dream state allows him to relive passages of his past and contextualise them in the present. I found myself thinking, "You can check-out any time you like, But you can never leave!", Hotel California minus the desert highway. If you are looking for closure, then depending on your definition, you may be disappointed. However the book leaves enough hanging for the reader to imagine more or leave the door open for another chapter in the Neil Chambers story.
Favourite word from the book: stochastic
Favourite quote: If trees thought, if they pondered, they would feel they’d made it, seen the worst of what life had to offer. But in truth they would grow, their confidence weighing them down until they collapsed under their own mass, brush to be chopped and cleared. The remaining saplings watched on, truly believing that it could not happen to them.

C.S. DeWildt is Ross MacDonald With a Drawl
By William E. Wallace
Neil Chase is one of the most unique characters to inhabit a recent crime novel: a hillbilly private eye equally at home huffing glue or sipping shine, he exists in a nightmarish Southern Gothic milieu in which he finds it easy to make “two enemies for every client he served.”
In "Love You to a Pulp," Chase is hired by a local pharmacist who deals illicit OxyContin on the side. His assignment: finding the druggist’s daughter, who has taken up with a local redneck.
The redneck ends up dead – a not very convincing suicide – and the daughter disappears, leading Neil into a lurid underworld of crooked cops, unethical lawyers, psychopathic shitkickers and backwoods succubae, all seeking dirty money – and often following a twisted fantasy of revenge.
In the fashion of good noir, the characters in this story are doomed by their own greed, lust and lack of ethical underpinnings, even Neil, whose backstory, in the form of flashbacks, is skillfully woven into the narrative of his search for the missing girl. The book plays out like Ross MacDonald with a drawl: key characters have intertwining histories and illicit connections; sex is as much a weapon as a shotgun or a Army model Colt automatic, and forced prostitution, incest and backwoods perversion are offered as substitutes for love.
As Neil’s search continues, the bodies pile up like cords of firewood alongside a cabin in the forest.
The trail, torturous and brutal, always seems to lead back to the same things: jealousy, greed – and dirty money, cash as toxic and addictive as the illicit drugs sold by the crooked pharmacist.
“It’s all stolen from somewhere,” Neil’s father, Lester tells him at one point in the story. “Every dollar you ever hold has blood in its very printing. Just not everybody gets a posse for their trouble.”
