The Eye of Osiris, by Raquel Zepeda Fitzgerald

Disturbing the dead is never a good idea. Stealing from the dead is an even worse idea. But opening the door to the wizardry of the Rosicrucian Order with ill-gotten spoils from the sands of Egypt -- that is definitely the road to hell.

Unsuspecting beneficiaries of a sacred Egyptian papyrus had no idea that this gift was the result of an unholy theft. Proudly displayed in the Rosicrucian Egyptian museum, the meanings within the papyrus's text had already taken hold. Bringing destruction to the thieves was just the beginning. Collateral damage was unavoidable.

It all seemed to culminate on the eve of March 14, while many of the leaders of the Rosicrucian Order were celebrating at a costume gala in the Santa Cruz mountains. Held at an elaborate mansion down the road from the enormous Cat statues off Highway 17, guests anticipated a great adventure. Dressed in Egyptian costumes, they were taken to the mansion on chariots driven by muscular men wearing scanty Egyptian slave costumes. Not since the filming of "Cleopatra" had such an elaborate depiction of Egyptian life been seen.

Could Pyramid power be what fueled the evil that moved from Egypt to the Rosicrucian Temple in San Jose, California and up into the edifice named the "Pyramid Building" in San Francisco? Old as time itself, the motives for this lamentable theft that stirred the evil, were greed and lust for power.

Consequence or curse? Semantics no longer mattered to the occupants of Suite 4800 in the Transamerica "Pyramid" Building. When employees of the law offices of McCormick, Redding and Patton fell victims to Egyptian sacrificial rituals, they were defenseless. No legal writ could protect them against the powers that had been unleashed.

Partner Jim Patton was unpopular but no one expected that his karma would cut him down in such a grisly fashion. SFPD's main suspect was Moriah Maizon who'd worked for Jim many years and appeared to have motive and opportunity. But they were a little short on the means since he appeared to have been executed by a rare Egyptian knife.

Incarceration is no way to celebrate a twenty million dollar inheritance. However, this proved to be Moriah's luckiest moment because as she slept restlessly in her cell, the Egyptian sacrificial ritual continued its rampage through San Francisco.

Clearly, madness was no new plateau for this killer whose victims showed no signs of struggle. No human could possibly be that quick nor that cunning, concluded many of the Bay area citizens. Encrypted with bloody, mysterious messages, the trail again led to the Rosicrucian Order.

When the bodies started piling up, Lt. Mendoza and all San Franciscans were hoping it was the work of a serial killer because the thought that a supernatural force was committing these executions was much too unsettling. Finally, Lt. Mendoza had to unearth the question that plagued everyone's mind, "Is this the work of a supernatural power or super intelligent madman?"

From the Author
This story will take you through many emotions: laughter, profound sadness, the joy of friends, the passion of love, and the love of life itself - not to mention the heebie jeebies! Here are a few excerpts from this story:

  • Perhaps this is when his love-hate relationship with weak women began. Feeding his ego was his life line. And, like so many suffering from ego-mania, he wasn't really looking for love, love was not enough; he wanted to be worshiped.
  • People can lose their minds when primal instincts conflict with the intellect. Such human conflict can twist the soul, as the self condones, denies then finally chooses the poisonous fruit, even when it may lead to madness. Because there is really no end to this internal, self-inflicted, destructive conflict. And, the landfill of human tragedies grows larger and larger; simply because of the age-old, most humanistic of excuses: the heart wants what it wants. Oddly enough, it only leads to the greatest of inhumanities.
  • It was a foggy, misty evening around eight o'clock in North Beach. In the alleyways, you could hear a harmonica's cries faintly echoing, pulling at you heart. North Beach was one of the few places where you could still find a few clubs that played this music whose notes struck into the depth and emotional crevices in your soul, music that can only be called the Blues.

Interesting
By John/Juan
The Title of the book is interesting in itself in that it conjures up ideation and imagery of the ancient gods of Egypt and most especially the ones of the underworld.

The book starts out with really adequate character development of the main protagonist of the book soon followed by another prominent character who happens to be the best female friend of the protagonist.

My impression though is there are too many characters presented in the first 20 pages or so. This may of course be my problem. The protagonists and their party friends and lovers were quite well expressed in the first half of the book was entertaining and quite realistic for their age group and economic situation.

The setting which is often in San Francisco is very well described. Some people might want the real action of a book in the genre of a murder mystery might wish the "action to start" before the half way through the book, but if the reading is pleasant up to that point I thought it was a "pleasant" read all the way through. The murders are quite strange but believable and the book winds up many of the mysteries being solved, but leaving just enough left unsolved to make one wonder if there will be subsequent novels with some of the same characters.

A Lively and Stylish Story - Leaves us wanting more
By Richard G
All the great elements of a good read are here - real characters, murky motives, and a besieged heroine. Set in stylish San Francisco, a cultish interpretation of Egyptian mythology and modern hipness is blended to make a compelling story. We hopefully await the sequel, because it seems the potential to continue filling out these characters is there. Excellent debut by this author that should continue with confidence to develop an enduring, uniquely American heroine in Moriah Maizon.
