A Great Book on Family Dynamics but the Typeface is TOO Small to Read!

I love this book very much and I have almost every book by this author, but why did I give it only four stars? First let me talk about the positive things. The structure of the book remains mostly the same as the original edition "You Can Go Home Again" published 15 years ago, with an addition chapter on how to coach clients to do family-of-origin tasks in counseling. It also adds and updates several genograms (i.e., family trees) of the celebrities (including Barack Obama) and incorporates recent demographical changes of diverse family forms into the book. The author tells stories of each family and uses genogram as a tool to analyze complex family patterns within the social, cultural, historical, and political context. She does an excellent job at this. I think this book is very suitable for family therapy students and clinicians, and also for anyone who'd like to learn more about oneself by examining his/her multigenerational family dynamics. The contents are:

2. Family Trees: The Past As Prologue
3. Family Stories, Myths, and Secrets
4. Family Ties and Binds
5. Death and Other Losses
6. Where Do We Come From? Parents and Children

Now it's the negative part. One big problem I have to complain is neither about the content nor the author, but about the typeface of the book!! The size of the typeface is so small that I can hardly read. It's only about 1/2 size of average "readable" typeface in other books. I don't know why the publishers made this awful decision to reduce the typeface size. I understand that they want to save money (and the trees), but it shouldn't be done at the expense of readers' health of eyesight. This one weakness makes reading this book very painful for me. I hope this problem can be fixed in later revision.

Famous Families

We are at risk of losing our center if we do not appreciate how much we are all linked in our journey through life and how much we need to find ways to hold on to our connections. ~ Monica McGoldrick

Monica McGoldrick believes that our family is "the most important emotional system to which most of use ever belong." In this book she explains how to look at your family in new ways. To explain how you can learn from your own family's experiences she explains the lives of famious people like Mohandas Gandhi and Queen Victoria. You can easily get lost in these stories for hours at a time. After reading this book you may think about your family differently and see everything in a new light. I can recommend this book to anyone who loves studying their family's history.

The basic tool for anyone who wants to understand his/her family

Monica McGoldrick is the Mother of the Genogram and every new book she writes stories that show us the humor, tragedy, pain, joy and dysfunction of families. I always recommend her books to my students and colleagues as well as Clients. He explanations help me apply her insights as well as want to read every story about famous citizens from the past and present to make her case with riveting case studies.

Pretty cool

This is a new reprint of this once rare book. It even contains the pen and ink drawings from the original Amazing Stories edition as well as numerous foreign and domestic film posters. There are, as another reviewer noted, numerous spelling & punctuation errors, basically something on almost every page, but they're minor, though the manuscript could benefit from another pass with a good editor. Philip J. Riley's "Nightmare series" is a great idea--keeping these old movie tie in novels alive. I collect novelizations and this is a wonderful addition to my collection.

Great read for fans of the movie!!!

As a big fan of the original film, this was a great item to have available since the original pulp story publication. There are the usual detractors such as multiple spelling and a few punctuation errors. I wish the books were edited with more accuracy to provide a better product to the fans of these original films as they are being published. Overall the film novel series has been very good, and I highly recommend all fans to buy them. Looking forward to future published titles.

WONDERFUL IDEA AND PRODUCT WITH JUST A FEW FLAWS

Here, in easily affordable reprint form, is the fabulous 20 MILLION MILES TO EARTH novelization by noted sci-fi and mystery author Henry Slesar. Based on the famous screenplay and film from Columbia Pictures 1957 science fiction epic. It is one of my all-time sci-fi and Ray Harryhausen greats in which Ray accomplished some of his BEST animation effects. This book is a great idea and I greatly appreciate its publication. The only thing I was dissatisfied with is the fact that some of the ink line illustrations reproduced from the original Amazing Stories issue are partially missing. That is, for whatever reason, some are incomplete. Its not a big deal, but I find it to be somewhat distracting. The book also has the bonus of good background material on the making of the film and input from Mr. Slesar himself on how the novelization came to be written. Overall: Pleased with this item.

A basic account of function in material culture is constructed by revising and extending existing theories of biological function to fit the cultural case. Here the adjustments are for the most part necessitated by special features of function in material culture.

These two parts of the project are held together by a trio of overarching themes: the relationship between individual and society, the problem of centralized control, and creativity.

New kind of medical book

This is a different kind of medical book from any I've ever looked at. The rest are predominantly lists and checklists, and dull as well. This one not only dispenses very helpful advice but gets inside the heads of children who have these conditions, their parents, and explains theory and practice behind the medical specialty itself. Some of the anecdotes about how non-specialists can botch treatment are shocking. Some if it is also quite funny. Also, it's nice to read a book by doctors who still clearly love the practice of medicine and doing good for people, in spite of all the changes that have happened to the profession in recent years. This book should make many lives better and even save some.

I agree with the other reviewers this is things I already know and have heard over and over. I was looking for something with more of a natural approach and this is not that. So if that's what you have in mind(natural approach) do not buy this book.

One of the better books on this subject

This is one of the better books on this topic. They prefer that you see an allergy specialist rather than a GP."The incidence of food allergy is much higher for children than for adjutls - 8 percent of those under three, and rising." The author claims that adults have outgrown food allergies which lowers it to 2% for the general population. The best part of the book was where he told parents if other people don't consider you "neurotic" then you are not being vigilant enough protecting your allergic child. The only "fault" the book may have is there is nothing offered as a reasonable cause for the epidemic of food allergies. Science can now look at live blood, we have so much research that has been done, but no one really knows what causes food allergies? Why is it that undeveloped countries have almost no food allergies?

About the Author

Rhys Bowen is the New York Times bestselling author of more than thirty mystery novels. Her work includes the Molly Murphy mysteries, set in 1900s New York City, and the lighter Royal Spyness novels, featuring a minor royal in 1930s England. Wonderful World War 2 story

This is the best Kindle First book I have read. Rhys Bowen’s Her Royal Spyness series is so much fun to read, and I read the newest book in the series as soon as it comes out. Accordingly, I was so excited to learn she had written a stand-alone novel that takes place during World War 2 (which is one of my favorite eras). Bowen did not disappoint – In Farleigh Field was a delight from beginning to end. I hesitated slightly when I first opened the novel because she includes a list of all of the characters upfront. I have generally found that means there are too many characters for me to keep up with, but that was not the case at all for In Farleigh Field. The central plot of the novel involves the ancestral home of Lord Westerham, Farleigh Place, which is serving as headquarters for one of the British armed forces groups. Lord Westerham has five daughters, three of whom play large roles in the story, Pamela, Margot and Phoebe. Pamela works at Bletchly Park breaking German codes, Margot is in Paris working for the French Resistance, and Phoebe is at home (she’s only 12) and discovers the body of a soldier whose parachute failed as he tried to land near Farleigh Place. There are various subplots that develop with these and other characters as the story progresses and eventually a number of them tie together very effectively. The resolution of each plot line was very realistic and convincing.

Bowen’s exhaustive research is evident, and the tidbits she includes really add to the storyline. I loved learning about the group of aristocrats that supported Hitler and created a group to try and make peace with Germany (she calls them the Ring in the novel; in actuality she explains in her Author’s Note that they were called the Link). The MI5 and Bletchly Park details were fascinating too. I highly recommend this novel and was so glad I got the chance to read it.

I always am excited about the first day of the month and what the Kindle First program will offer. I chose IN FARLEIGH FIELD because I felt it was time to read some historical fiction. While I enjoyed it and there was no question there was a great deal of research that went into the book, I must say it is not an easy read. Inspired by events of World War II, this family saga draws the reader into the dreadful days of the war with believable characters, a riveting plot and what was surprising to me - non-stop action. The plot involves the family home of Lord Westerham, Farleigh Place, which are the headquarters for a British armed forces group. Lord Westerham has 5 daughters, three of whom play a large part in the novel, Margot, Pamela and Phoebe. Margot is in Paris working for the French Resistance, Pamela works breaking German codes and the youngest Phoebe discovers the body of a soldier whose parachute failed when he tried to land near Farleigh Place. As the body arouses suspicion - MI5 operative and family friend Ben Cresswell is confidentially asked to investigate who the deceased is as he has no identification and work out whether he is in fact a German spy... and this is where the action seriously begins. There are many subplots that develop as the story progresses and they weave together well. The first half of the book is filled with characters’ individual stories which were interesting, but does require intense concentration however it is the last 100 pages where everything takes off and were totally action packed. It has a bit of romance as well. Overall, a good mystery that takes the reader down an action packed path. It is unputdownable and quite unique - a great Kindle First choice. 4.5 Stars from me.

Enjoyable read. A look into the lives of the English upper crust and how they and even their daughters helped the war effort. Involves some spying and a look into code breaking. Refreshingly devoid of vulgar language, graphic sex, and graphic violence. Could be classified as Historical Fiction/Mystery, as there is a traitor in their midst.

Eye Opening

This book is absolutely amazing and I highly recommend it for ALL relationships, whether someone has been unfaithful or not. I have been married for almost 6 years and recently found out that my wife has been unfaithful for the past year of our marriage. It felt like somebody literally pulled a rug out from under me and I hit the floor with a thud. All of my friends of course said I should pack up my stuff and leave. Friends and family may mean well, but most of them don't have the slightest clue on what to do when it comes to relationships. I bought this book and one other in search of answers and guidance.

The book really opened my eyes to what all is involved when an affair happens, and it also shows that affairs can happen in good marriages if safeguards are not followed to protect the marriage. My attention was immediately hooked after the first quiz in the book which was created to let people know if the person they say is "just a friend" really is just that. I can honestly say after reading this book I have realized that even though I never physically cheated on my wife, I came close to having an emotional affair at one point. What I also liked about this book is that most books that deal with affairs always seem to be focused around the husband being the cheater. The author shared not only about female infidelity, but also research that backed up the different reasons for why males and females cheat.

The book wants you to ask the question "Is your spouse genuinely a dishonest person, or were they dishonest because of the affair?" There was also an excellent point made that you should NEVER discuss any problems in your relationship with someone who could potentially be a replacement for your partner. Only discuss problems with someone of the opposite sex if they are a "FRIEND of the marriage" and wants to see your marriage work. The author also provides an excellent strategy using "walls and windows" and the best ways to protect your marriage. This book not only saved my marriage but also saved my sanity as well. It is a MUST READ!

A great read

I found the book very cathartic. I found that I was having a lot of the feelings described in it.The writer was spot on when she spoke of the dimensions of pain and grief that are associated with the relationship before, during, and after the betrayal. I appreciate her point of view in trying to save the relationship, but for me I decided that sometimes you just have to cut your losses and move on.
A great read never the less.

My husband and I worked our way thru this book. It was a starter for many conversations to help us recover from this devastating occurrence. I highly recommend this in conjunction with "Helping Your Spouse Recover From Your Affair". I don't know how we could have recovered without guidance from these books. We were very committed and worked thru these together. What a difference in our marriage today!
