This book is good, but let's face it, it's difficult to learn software from a book. "E-Learning Heroes" (the Articulate learning community site) has a bunch of videos available to learn how to do everything you need to do - from adding triggers to change the state of an object to creating a freeform quiz. Diane Elkins is the consummate explainer!

I recently took a course on Captivate 7 with Diane Elkins. Her book can easily stand alone as the authoritative "how to" on using Captivate 7. She also provides a very unbiased, yet helpful, perspective on what this software does well (and not so well), and recommends ways to get the most out of the software in order to create high-quality on-line learning. This is money well-spent. She explains, step by step, how to create captivate presentations. I would unequivocally recommend this guide to anyone trying to learn this software and plan to use it as a handy reference when creating presentations in Captivate. I further suggest that if anyone gets the chance to take an in-person course with her they should jump at the chance. She's very logical, engaging, and approachable and makes this training enjoyable.

In Empire of Language, Laurent Dubreuil explores the power-language phenomenon in the context of European and, particularly, French colonialism and its aftermath. Through readings of the colonial experience, he isolates a phraseology based on possession, in terms of both appropriation and haunting, that has persisted throughout the centuries. Not only is this phraseology a legacy of the past, it is still active today, especially in literary renderings of the colonial experience―but also, and more paradoxically, in anticolonial discourse. This phrase shaped the teaching of European languages in the (former) empires, and it tried to configure the usage of those idioms by the "Indigenes." Then, scholarly disciplines have to completely reconsider their discursive strategies about the colonial, if, at least, they attempt to speak up.

Dubreuil ranges widely in terms of time and space, from the ancien r�gime through the twentieth century, from Paris to Haiti to Quebec, from the Renaissance to the riots in the banlieues. He examines diverse texts, from political speeches, legal documents, and colonial treatises to anthropological essays, poems of the N�gritude, and contemporary rap, ever attuned to the linguistic strategies that undergird colonial power. Equally conversant in both postcolonial criticism and poststructuralist scholarship on language, but also deeply grounded in the sociohistorical context of the colonies, Dubreuil sets forth the conditions for an authentically postcolonial scholarship, one that acknowledges the difficulty of getting beyond a colonialism―and still maintains the need for an afterward.

Laurent Dubreuil is Professor of Romance Studies and Comparative Literature, Director of the French Studies Program, and member of the cognitive science program and graduate field at Cornell University. Jennifer LeClaire does not mince words, she says it like it is. I love how she takes it back to the Word of God every time, and clarifies a lot of questions about prophecy that pop up more than one might think. I wish I had read this book 10 years ago, it would have saved me a lot of unnecessary grief and doubt. That said, I'm glad I have it now and I would definitely recommend it.

This answers many questions I've had from some bizarre experiences with "prophets" which I began to realize were highly questionable and others who had completely the wrong heart/spirit behind their words. Great book!!

About the Author
Jack Dempsey (1895–1983) held the World Heavyweight Championship from 1919 to 1926. Many of his fights set financial and attendance records, including the first million-dollar gate. Dempsey was inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame in 1951 and is considered to be one of the greatest boxers of the twentieth century.

YOUR FISTS WILL BE LIKE LOADED GUNS WHEN YOU LEARN FROM JACK DEMPSEY "THE ULTIMATE PUNCHER"

This is said to be the ultimate book on the subject of boxing from probably the most devastating puncher of all time. When Jack was in his 70`s two young thugs tried to rob him but Jack suddenly throw two lightening fast punches and the two guys were laying on the ground knocked out according to witnesses. Wow, even in old age Jack was still a powerful striker. Jack teaches you how to shift your body and put your weight into your punches with techniques such as "The Shoulder Twirl" so that your punches will be very powerful instead of weak arm punches which is how most people throw them. Using this knowledge will enable a 130 pound guy to easily knock out a 300 pound guy who doesn`t have the same knowledge. The arms are only delivery mechanisms. Think of your arms as whips. It`s the same principle as a cowboy using a whip which can cut flesh and be deadly. With this knowledge you don`t have to be the biggest or strongest guy in order to dominate in a self defense situation in prison or on the street. That`s why boxers are the best strikers in the world and a karate or kung fu guy can`t punch like a skilled boxer. Jack will also teach you how to defend yourself effectively and not get hit. Warning: When you learn this knowledge from Jack be careful how you use it. It can be very dangerous in capable hands. God Bless and Jesus is the answer :)

Enjoyed reading it.

I love books on fighting, and this one is no exception. Written by Jack Dempsey, so it's an older book...you can tell by the pictures and the language throughout. I really enjoyed it! I've been a martial artist for over 30 years, so I'm always looking to soak up as much knowledge as I can about fighting and self-defense. It's not exactly a "fighter's bible", but it was entertaining and informative. The book is a bigger than a TV Guide, but smaller than a magazine...Not too thick, either. The writing is big and easy to read.

I chanced my bucks with this book and turns out that it is not a disappointing investment.

There's plenty of useful information in this book that you can put into actual practice in your training regimen which makes it even more appealing to me. This is more like an "instructional manual" and the book was obviously designed for that purpose. You can't go wrong with Jack Dempsy's work.

PS I saw one of the review which said perhaps this is where Bruce Lee draw his inspiration. I totally agree with that. I've trained a little Jeet kune do in the past and Jeet kune do is the south paw version of Jack Dempsy's approach to boxing. Now Bruce Lee was learning to box as part of his martial art development. It makes me think that perhaps his boxing coach were familiar with Jack's method or one of those old timers boxers/ maybe Bruce Lee even read this book before. There's just so much resemblance to dismiss the possibility that Bruce Lee based his martial art on Jack's boxing approach. To call it a coincidence I think would not be a satisfying answer. There's 99 percent overlap between the two except the kungfu elements of parrying and kicking were part of jeet kune do's arsenal which present the 1 percent.

PSS Another comment were saying it was difficult managing the "fall-step". Where I found it interesting was that if you had been a runner like me who studied the "Pose Method running" - by Dr. Nicolas Romanov ~ you grasp the idea almost instantly. I have no problem to adopt the "falling-step" in my training routine because the idea of falling step was what constitute the main practice of Pose Method of running. If you don't know what is "Pose Method Running" maybe you should google it and I highly recommend the book. It has completely changed the way I run and anyone can run injury free. Ok sounds like I am reviewing for another book but just so that you know another good investment and running is also part of boxing conditioning so there you go. ( It is surprising how much you can learn from books given the time and patience!)
