Grade 6 Up—Ryan McCray and Sarah Fincher wonder how Skeleton Creek, OR, received its name. Research takes them on a nighttime expedition to a mechanical dredge, where Ryan breaks his leg. The teens think the dredge is haunted by Joe Bush, a miner killed there. The book is interspersed with Sarah's videos, which can be accessed on the Internet. The mystery remains to be solved; sequels are guaranteed. Plot weaknesses mitigate the teen appeal of the Internet tie-in concept. The book's central flaw: it is not scary. Ryan's narration should provide creepy immediacy, but his constant insistence that he is petrified never plays out in the story. The book ramps up and peters out, without a climax or resolution of the mystery. The repetitive musings hold the pace to a slow walk, and Carman relies on contrivance to keep adults at bay. Another reason it lags is the lack of synergy between Ryan and Sarah, even though they are supposedly best friends. They communicate only via electronic means (their parents have forbidden their friendship), and their individual findings don't dovetail into one coherent story line. Even if one stops to watch Sarah's videos, there seem to be missing pieces of information that make the plot hard to follow. But parental edicts mean little in the face of a true mystery in the teens’ boring town, so the two use technology to keep in touch: while Ryan journals and frets, Sarah films her adventures, references to which appear periodically in the journal along with the address of a Web site where they can be viewed. With an appropriately homemade look, the nicely choreographed videos definitely build atmosphere, but for most of the novel, readers won’t miss vital clues if a computer isn’t close at hand. It’s the ending that really annoys: the last page of the journal leads to a video that promises answers—but not until May 2009. A spoiler? OMG! My students are engaged!

Going into the last week of school with 6th graders knowing that grades have all been submitted and their fate has been decided is rough. They are ready for summer and basically nothing educational will keep their attention. Then I stumbled upon this book. I figured why not try it as I knew my students liked scary movies.

First you read the book.... Ryan's journal of events that are taking place AND THEN you watch a video from Sarah online. These are 3-8 minute videos made by "Sarah" a teenage girl. They are not state of the art videos but they are enough to get a rise out of the kids. It is not too scary just every once in awhile something unexpected jumps out at you. My students could not get enough of this book. They would listen for hours and beg to watch the videos over and over again. They would beg for me to stop reading so we read... A LOT!

This book was so good that soon the 6th grade class next door was wondering what we were up to and wanted in on the action. So... they started reading. Then the third class joined us and then friends at another school. I am telling you... this book is a life saver! We ended up reading the first 4 books of the series in the last 4 days of the school year!!! It was the most we read all year long. The kids went home after school and rewatched the videos with their parents. They were desperate to be the first one to solve the mystery.

This would be the perfect "Halloween" story as well. I saw somewhere that this was good for grades 4-6. I would agree. I think 7th graders may even enjoy it.

BEST BOOK EVER!!

I can't sum this book up with just one adjective—it was, by far, the most thrilling, creepy, spooky and haunting yet FANTASTICALLY written/directed book I have EVER read. I love the parts where you have to go to the website ([...]) and actually type in the passwords to watch Sarah's video journals. It just adds so much more to the overall chilling effect of the book and makes it so much more interesting.....This is a must read for anyone who likes mystery/creepy stories; though, even if you don't, this book will make you like it! I can't wait to buy the second book in the series...the first leaves you with such a cliffhanger....

What a fantastic idea of bridging text and video

I read about this book in an educators magazine recently. Classroom teachers were sharing the most popular books in their classrooms - the ones that don't stay on the shelves! I work with middle school reluctant readers and am always on the lookout for titles that might hold their attention! I ordered Skeleton Creek and quickly read it. What a fantastic idea of bridging text and video. You read a few chapters and then type in the website and watch the eery video with one of the characters giving you more information about the mystery at hand! Very motivating and engaging! Its a series so that's a huge plus!

Although shattered by war, in 1945 Britain and France still controlled the world's two largest colonial empires, with imperial territories stretched over four continents. The collapse was cataclysmic. Peaceable 'transfers of power' were eclipsed by episodes of territorial partition and mass violence whose bitter aftermath still lingers. Hundreds of millions across four continents were caught up in the biggest reconfiguration of the international system ever seen.

In the meantime, even the most dogged imperialists, who had once stiffly defended imperial rule, ultimately bent to the wind of change. By the early 1950s Winston Churchill had retreated from his wartime pledge to keep Britain's Empire intact. And General de Gaulle, who quit the French presidency in 1946 complaining that France's new post-war democracy would never hang on to the country's imperial prizes, narrowly escaped assassination a generation later - after negotiating the humiliating French withdrawal from Algeria.

Fight or Flight is the first ever comparative account of this dramatic collapse, explaining the end of the British and French colonial empires as an intertwined, even co-dependent process. Decolonization gathered momentum, not as an empire-specific affair, but as a global one, in which the wider march of twentieth-century history played a vital part: industrial concentration and global depression, World War and Cold War, Communism and other anti-colonial ideologies, mass consumerism and the allure of American popular culture. Above all, as Martin Thomas shows, the internationalization of colonial affairs made it impossible to contain colonial problems locally, spelling the end for Europe's two largest colonial empires in less than two decades from the end of the Second World War.

About the Author

Martin Thomas is Professor of Imperial History in the Department of History at the University of Exeter, where he has taught since 2003. He founded the University's Centre for the Study of War, State and Society, which supports research into the impact of armed conflict on societies and communities. He is a past winner of a Philip Leverhulme prize for outstanding research and a holder of a Leverhulme Trust Major Research Fellowship. He has published widely on twentieth century French and imperial history, including The French Empire between the Wars: Imperialism, Politics and Society, Empires of Intelligence: Security Services and Colonial Disorder after 1914, Crises of Empire: Decolonization and Europe's Imperial States, 1918-1975, and most recently Violence and Colonial Order: Police, Workers and Protest in the European Colonial Empires, 1918-1940.

A thoughtful analysis of the demise of the French and British empires. A difficult but highly informative book.

I'm going to rate this as a qualified five stars. It is an excellent study that compares how the British and French handled the end of their colonial empires. The "fight or flight" in the title refers to how some colonies were freed with no particular trauma and others only after extended vioolence. The research is thorough, the writing is excellent and the book is highly detailed. It is essentially an academic study without the scholarly apparatus. It is particularly good on the French in Madagascar, Indochina and Algeria, and the British in India, Malaya and Kenya. There's some about other colonies--a little about Rhodesia, Nigeria and elsewhere. The book also looks in some detail at the British in Palestine, and Thomas essentially says the British just left and left chaos behind. His comments about Palestinians will likely anger readers who are pro-Israeli.

That said, this is a slow read because of the detail, a welter of names, places, policies and events, some of which are widely familiar such as the Battle of Algiers and some of which is not, such as the fairly gory and entirely brutal British response in Kenya, or the macabre business of throwing people from helicopters into the sea. For someone interested in the subject but without the time to read the whole book (it took me more than a day, and I'm a fast reader) I would recommend the concluding chapter, which is a fine summary and includes some discussion of how historians have seen the decolonization phenomenon. A reader could pick out particular chapters of interest (most detailed on the most savage war, in Algeria) but that might miss the comparisons.

Thomas does not seem to have a particular political agenda. He does more or less condemn some of the policies, and also the violence. Terror was widely used both by rebelling groups and by security forces. Some of the French security forces in Algeria were noted for widespread use of torture, but there were some stains on British honor as well, which included summary executions. Alas, the victims of both imperial and revolutionary violence were the local populations. The settler colonies (Southern Rhodesia and Algeria in particular) were particularly complex situations. Thomas does say that the ending of imperial rule did not end difficult and violent situations (case in point: the massive violence and waves of refugees following independence of India and its partition).

The maps are fairly good. The book has a few interesting photos but would be improved by more.

Incarceration is no way to celebrate a twenty million dollar inheritance. However, this proved to be Moriah's luckiest moment because as she slept restlessly in her cell, the Egyptian sacrificial ritual continued its rampage through San Francisco.

Clearly, madness was no new plateau for this killer whose victims showed no signs of struggle. No human could possibly be that quick nor that cunning, concluded many of the Bay area citizens. Encrypted with bloody, mysterious messages, the trail again led to the Rosicrucian Order.

When the bodies started piling up, Lt. Mendoza and all San Franciscans were hoping it was the work of a serial killer because the thought that a supernatural force was committing these executions was much too unsettling. Finally, Lt. Interesting

The Title of the book is interesting in itself in that it conjures up ideation and imagery of the ancient gods of Egypt and most especially the ones of the underworld.

The book starts out with really adequate character development of the main protagonist of the book soon followed by another prominent character who happens to be the best female friend of the protagonist.

My impression though is there are too many characters presented in the first 20 pages or so. This may of course be my problem. The protagonists and their party friends and lovers were quite well expressed in the first half of the book was entertaining and quite realistic for their age group and economic situation.

The setting which is often in San Francisco is very well described. Some people might want the real action of a book in the genre of a murder mystery might wish the "action to start" before the half way through the book, but if the reading is pleasant up to that point I thought it was a "pleasant" read all the way through. The murders are quite strange but believable and the book winds up many of the mysteries being solved, but leaving just enough left unsolved to make one wonder if there will be subsequent novels with some of the same characters.

A Lively and Stylish Story - Leaves us wanting more

All the great elements of a good read are here - real characters, murky motives, and a besieged heroine. Set in stylish San Francisco, a cultish interpretation of Egyptian mythology and modern hipness is blended to make a compelling story. We hopefully await the sequel, because it seems the potential to continue filling out these characters is there. Excellent debut by this author that should continue with confidence to develop an enduring, uniquely American heroine in Moriah Maizon.

I dont really think there is any book like this out there ! i've been hoping for long time to get such a book that integrate anatomy , radiology with amazing illustration for staging which makes things consolidate instead of looking at staging tables ! as well there is a brief discussion of pathology and treatment modalities, yet the Tx is very basic approach only.
spending that much $$ in a book may be abit painful esp. if you are a resident/fellow yet TRUST ME ..every cents is well spent !
Enjoy the book and be a better physician :)

Great book!

I've been waiting for a book like this that merges radiology and oncology. It's a much needed addition to other text books which mention radiographic findings of staging, but do not actually show what those findings look like. This a really awesome book - will make staging stick much better. Although the book is expensive, it is comprehensive and the photo quality is excellent.

One of the best books in my choral library

I purchased this book because I wanted to understand better how to make a choir's sound more unified and natural. Howard brilliantly covers the subject of tonality and scales singing with and without an instrument. The exercises and tips regarding a healthy singing voice really work and I consider this practical help to be concise and relevant. Moreover, it is one of the few books that is a joy to read being light in style and beautifully illustrated in color. Excellent value. Highly recommended.
